Editorial: MPO wisely places comfort ahead of technology

How refreshing. How reassuring to see that government really can put the people’s interests first.

When confronted with a choice the other day between a study of a bus tracking system that would advise would-be passengers whether the buses are on time, transportation planners opted for building shelters — to keep would-be passengers out of the sun and rain.

Members of the Metropolitan Planning Organization of Collier County said they are frustrated at the slow pace of shelter construction — only 32 at the transit system’s 1,000 bus stops — and want more results on that before moving ahead with electronic updates networked to bus stops and cell phones.

Nothing wrong with technology, MPO members said, but first things first.

Let’s see more of that kind of thinking. It should not come to a choice between heat stroke or being informed. Why not shelters and on-time service?

If Collier Area Transit can be patient and clever enough to maneuver bus stop signs into the city of Naples, CAT can do anything.
