Q: Several months ago, there was an article about a new flea market coming on U.S. 41, east of 951. I have not heard anything else about it. Opening was approximately March to April. What happened to it?

Q: My question is regarding the flea market that is being built on the East Trail, east of 951. We had a number of opening dates and now we hear nothing. Will the flea market be opening this year or is it a dead issue?

A: “We’re Almost Done! Opening Date Announced Soon!”
That’s a headline on bigcypressmarketplace.com, the Web site for the Big Cypress Market Place. That’s “done” as in completed, not dead. “Soon” is June.
“Our goal is June,” said Clare Ulik, director of marketing and public relations for Basik Development, builder, owner and operator of the Market Place.
I know what you are saying. Keep in mind that June is just a goal, the latest target.
Late February or early March was the goal reported in my January column, early December was the planned date mentioned in an October column, and the expected opening date was November in my column last July.
In a story published in August 2006, the business was slated to open in September 2007.
Construction delays, especially permitting setbacks, have kept the Big Cypress Market Place from opening as planned.
“We just got our final permit a couple of weeks ago,” Ulik said.
The Market Place, located off U.S. 41 East four miles east of Collier Boulevard, offers air-conditioned shopping from hundreds of vendors, including a fresh produce market, winery and entertainment area. The flea market area is 75 percent to 80 percent leased, and the produce market and restaurant space are filled, Ulik said.
“Erase preconceived ideas you’ve ever had of flea markets,” she said. “We’re going to be new, exciting and completely unique.”
The upscale flea market will be open year-round 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays through Sundays.

Q: What is going in the former building of Rooms To Go on U.S. 41 North? There are workers there daily rehabbing the interior of the building.

A: OfficeMax is creating a new store in the shell of the former Rooms To Go building at 3770 U.S. 41 N. The target date for opening is in mid-July, according to Alan Cooper, the new store’s manager.
In late 2006, Rooms To Go opened a new Naples store about two blocks down the road at 3520 U.S. 41 N. that nearly doubled its space. The new location was the former site of Hodges Funeral Chapel.
The new Rooms To Go store spans 28,000 square feet, while the old store — the new OfficeMax — is slightly more than 15,000 square feet.

A funeral chapel the size of a football field?

Please note: The old funeral home was completely razed before the new Rooms To Go store was built at its new site.

What is happening with the old Winn-Dixie store on 41/951 corner. There's also been a billboard for LOWES on the same corner. What's happening with that?
Why do "permitting setbacks" seem to be the norm in Naples? I've seen it with Home Depot on Airport-Pulling, Walmart, the newest one, and Tractor Supply, on 41. I'm sure there's many, many more. I get the impression Naples isn't business friendly to multi-location businesses. And in this part of town we need them.
We could also use more dining options in this part of town. So many establishments shut down or limit hours and menus during off season. More family-friendly places like Carrabba's would be a treat, and I think would do well. Especially with gas prices now having to be included when one figures out their total expense.

'Upscale flea market'...that's as good of an oxymoron as 'jumbo shrimp' or 'government intelligence'. :) I have no problems with the flea market, kind of like them in fact, but I hope they aren't going to get too 'Naples-y' about it. I mean come on... the whole point of a flea market is you get stuff cheap. Why bother going if everything will be typically over-priced for the area?

The description of this "Upscale flea market" sounds more like a "Department Store" to me.

I think it's now a staples in the old winn dixie at 951 and 41. it's not open yet, but all the signs are up, shelving in there....we shall see. I totally agree. WE NEED GOOD RESTAURANTS HERE. I can't afford to drive to north naples for a dinner out. Heck, I can't afford a dinner out------period. I guess it doesn't matter if it's right here or not. LOL
