Letter of the day: Why not?
Editor, Daily News:
Foreclosure is a terrible thing. I am sad to see so many homes laying bare and unused.
What happens to the homes that still have household goods in them? What happens to the canned goods, the well-cared-for furniture? The small and large appliances? The beds and mattresses? The things that could be used for people in this community?
Is it all just thrown away?
Or is it donated to Habitat for Humanity? Is it given to the veterans’ or seniors’ homes? Is it given to the food banks?
Are we so cold that because you lose your home, you lose everything, and all you have worked hard for is just, to a bank, trash?
Does this mean than that our landfills are going to fill with usable items that could help a family who lost everything? Or worse, raise our taxes?
Why not give some hope to those who are down and reuse what is obviously available, and now?
Why not pay it forward, in our community’s biggest time of need?
Rachel Golden, Naples
Obvious gender bias
Editor, Daily News:
Why does your paper feel free to openly treat boys and girls sports teams so differently?
The Naples High School football team won a state title and the paper spent weeks covering its every play, with special reports on the top players, the parade that the city gave the team and even the boys getting their rings.
A girls basketball team wins a state title and it gets a couple days’ mention in the paper. No city parade.
The Naples High softball team wins a state title against a nationally ranked team and it gets some stories in the paper (which conveniently prominently mention the football team), but then they basically disappear from coverage. Again, no parade for the girls.
It is a clear case of discrimination and I think your paper should be ashamed!
I have no daughters so this is not sour grapes from a parent of a female athlete. I am a concerned citizen sick to death of the one-sided coverage of your newspaper. Please respond and, more importantly, why not address this with the powers that be?
Andrea Casement, Naples
What really matters
Editor, Daily News:
Another Mother’s Day has come and gone.
I am a fortunate guy; I have the chance to share with my mom on a regular basis just how much I love her and deeply appreciate her unconditional love.
With all the frustrating and painful issues in our world, with war, the nation, the economy — locally with all the school-related problems — I have finally identified one major point of inner peace: the functional family unit and a mother’s love.
My goal is to not always need a special day or purpose to appreciate this unfailing blessing of life.

Doing great work
Editor, Daily News:
I completely empathized with Sunday’s Perspective section front-page article by Michael Church, “Spreading awareness, hope about Parkinson’s disease.”
He and his wife, Gretchen, must struggle to live a full productive life through their altruistic activities centering around Parkinson’s, while having to face the hardships it brings. They are helping the public become more aware through their efforts of the daily difficulties the Parkinson’s patient faces.
This movement disorder neurological disease might eventually necessitate the use of a wheelchair, as the disease is progressive. It might require the Parkinson’s patient to find a wheelchair-accessible dwelling, if not assisted living.
As a local Realtor, I am informing the public that these kinds of requirements can often be found through the Multiple Listing System by sympathetic professionals in my field. I can appreciate how important this is to some. I, too, am a Parkinson’s “care partner.” My wife was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease a few years ago.
We are both supporting active members of the Parkinson Association of Southwest Florida and gain much from our involvement with it.
The address is 6226 Trail Boulevard, Naples, 34108; phone, 594-9421; e-mail, pasfi@aol.com.
Its mission is to raise public awareness, encourage research and help the quality of life for people whose lives are affected by Parkinson’s disease.
It takes courage and dedication to live life to its fullest, even without the physical, emotional and social challenges brought about by Parkinson’s, and it is so much harder with them.
My wife and I salute the efforts by Gretchen and Michael Church, the volunteers and the various Parkinson associations and foundations.

Editor, Daily News:
I hope Collier School Superintendent Dennis Thompson did not really say, “We are not in the business to clean schools. We are in the business to educate children.”
If he did, he should be forced to repeat fifth-grade English.
Either “We are not in the business of cleaning schools. We are in the business of educating children” or “We are not in business to clean schools. We are in business to educate children” would have been grammatically correct.
For the sake of our children’s education, please tell me he was misquoted.
David B. Goldstein, Naples
Helpful suggestion?
Editor, Daily News:
I am always happy to participate in the letter carriers’ program to provide food to help Stamp Out Hunger.
However, I believe they miss the mark by a few weeks. By the end of May, a lot of “snowbirds” have already flown back north.
If this program was a few weeks earlier, they would catch all the people looking to clean out their food pantry before leaving town. I would believe lots of food gets thrown in the garbage that could be donated to this program.
Just a thought!
Pat Silva, Naples
Is that clear?
Editor, Daily News:
I suppose Peg Goldberg Longstreth wishes to demonstrate cosmopolitanism and sophisticated elegance by slipping the occasional foreign word or phrase into her writings — a twist of refinement, as it were — to show erudition and stylistic class.
Fine.
But then it should also be de rigueur that the foreign phrase is correct and not a hybrid, as in au current (ouch!) in her May 2 review of popular music on Page 8D.
If you don’t know that the correct expression is “au courant,” then why not drop the “au” and the italics and stick with plain English — “current” — rather than offend the reader with a malapropism?
George F. Muller, Naples
It’s fundamental
Editor, Daily News:
To Collier County:
A plus B equals C.
A equals nonresident homeowner Collier County property taxes (already higher than those for a resident homeowner).
B equals nonresident Collier County homeowner cannot vote on Collier County issues.
C equals taxation without representation.
Is there something not quite right with this equation? At the very, very least, there should not be any disparity between resident and nonresident homeowner property taxes. A homeowner is a homeowner!
And, nonresidents pay for a full year while only here for a portion of the year.
Perhaps some pencil-sharpening needs to be done.
Wayne C. Fuller, Naples
It just gets worse
Editor, Daily News:
I remember Richard Nixon’s expansion of the war in Vietnam into the surrounding countries of Laos and Cambodia. His excuse was that we could defeat Ho Chi Minh if only Vietnam’s neighbors would mind their business.
Now we hear the same rhetoric coming from President Bush. He believed that Iraq could be conquered if not for Syria and Iran. Nixon’s attack on Laos and Cambodia did not stop the march of North Vietnamese into the southern cities of Vietnam, eventually driving the United States out.
More than five years ago, this sorry excuse for a president claimed victory over Iraq. He did this in a ceremony where he was clad in a flight jacket aboard an aircraft carrier.
Our sons and daughters (mostly from the lower rung of our economic ladder) have fought and died for lies similar to those put forth about the Gulf of Tonkin incident. George Bush and Dick Cheney should be tried for crimes against humanity.
This country will have a tough struggle to overcome the catastrophic damage this pair has done to our beloved country.
Frank Fraser, Naples

Editor, Daily News:
Barry Willoughby asserts that fellow letter-writer Alan Keller is an impudent liar for reporting that 1998 was the warmest year on record.
Willoughby further states that officials of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration “admitted their mistake almost a year ago, while noting 1934 was the warmest year.”
Had Willoughby been reading a bit more carefully, he might have discovered the following:
• Last year NASA publicly reported an error in the recording of temperatures in the United States. That very small error once corrected did not alter NASA’s long-standing rating of 1934 as the warmest year in the recorded history of U.S. temperatures.
• Keller, on the other hand, was very clearly speaking of global temperatures and global warming. NASA still reports 1998 as the warmest year globally.
• United States temperatures are not representative of the entire globe.
Should Willoughby remain confused on these points, he should check with NASA.

’What a man!’
Editor, Daily News:
Congratulations to reporter Aisling Swift on her coverage of the sentencing of Jesus Moreno Lucio and, more importantly, the aftermath of that sentencing (“Man gets 22 years for injuring deputy,” April 29).
Moreno, 22, a drug addict whose family was trying to get him into rehab, was operating a vehicle trying to elude arrest, when he smashed into Deputy Bill Pschigoda.
The Collier County deputy sheriff was thrown 230 feet from point of impact, suffering severe head injuries. He “died” twice during transport to Lee Memorial Hospital on Dec. 5, 2005, and was in a coma for three weeks, undergoing several operations and lengthy rehabilitation, which now has ended.
After sentencing, something unusual happened: The families mingled. “I am so sorry,” said Pschigoda to Moreno’s mother and other relatives. Moreno’s brother, Juan, replied, “We’re so sorry. We thank God you’re alive.”
Moreno’s mother said the family prayed for Pschigoda. He replied that he was brought up in a religious family and he has forgiven Moreno, saying, “I know you’re sorry. These things happen.”
Deputy Sheriff Cpl. Bill Pschigoda — what a man!

Road to ruin
Editor, Daily News:
Leasing Alligator Alley! How atrocious!
Florida should not be leasing our taxpayers’ assets for ready cash. As Patrick Buchanan says in his book, “Day of Reckoning,” Americans are witnessing the great auction of America’s national assets!
Toll roads such as Indiana’s toll road, Dulles in North Virginia and the Texas Corridor, which have been leased, bring in steady, gigantic profits. They are a guaranteed revenue stream likely to rise over time. After Gov. Mitch Daniels touted his wonderful lease of the Indiana toll road, bumper stickers appeared, “Keep the Toll Road; Lease Mitch.”
As “Day of Reckoning” states, “Any kid playing Monopoly knows how the game ends.” Sell all your valuables for quick cash, and soon you are left bankrupt.
Selling the Alley is a crime against the taxpayers of Florida.
Marge Retzler, Bonita Springs
P.S. — It seems the Daily News should be up in arms about this fiasco. I think it’s atrocious. We won’t even know when the meeting is held to discuss this unless it’s in your paper.
Too obvious to work?
Editor, Daily News:
President Bush is in total denial, as evidenced by his lack of recognition that the United States is in a recession.
He continues the blame game that Congress is responsible for our energy crisis. He claims his focus is on the future, but continues to propose the pursuit of old oil-based technologies (drilling, refineries, etc.).
What else would one expect from him?! The future is staring him right in the face.
Fuel can be produced from sugar beets, switch grass and other cellulosic materials (without using corn) and the processes are already in place.
The reason our government does not aggressively pursue these options is because of international business; the people and country be damned. The reality is we may lose some employment and profits in some sectors but knowledgeable people have projected the generation of many new, middle-class jobs which would be safe from exportation to other counties.
Why? Because most activities would be focused within the borders of the U.S.
Bottom line: If we look for top-down direction (neither Bush nor Congress has the will) to solve our energy and economic problems, it will never happen. There is too much money and influence involved.
The force will come from the bottom up if we demand change and spell out the consequences for inaction.

A day’s difference
Editor, Daily News:
Talk about timing!
Monday’s article, “Grand Illusion,” with pornographic photos for our local young readers as a follow-up article to Sunday’s Mother’s Day coverage will go down in journalism history as an “all-time low!”
Lynne Malpeli, Naples
A better choice
Editor, Daily News:
I have never been accused of being prejudiced.
Friends and family on both my and my husband’s side include all different kinds of nationalities, races and people with varied sexual preferences.
I have always taught my children to be open-minded to everyone’s choice of partner.
However, my entire family found the picture on the front page of the Neapolitan section to be extremely distasteful — a wonderful article about the talent of these young men, but I do not feel this is a publication which can handle the level of controversy you are asking.
I think a more vivid shot of what beautiful performers these men can transform themselves into would have been a far better choice.
Kimberly Sze, Naples
Waiting ...
Editor, Daily News:
We have been residents of Naples and subscribers to the Daily News since 1978.
We are proud of our community and we have tried hard to do our part to make Naples a place where we can all be proud to live.
The Daily News is to be commended for all it has given to our community over the years.
On Monday we were disappointed to see that our leading local newspaper had chosen to cross the line of moral and decent reporting! We were offended and embarrassed to see the photo on the front of the Neapolitan section. To say the least, it was appalling and shocking! One would think the Daily News would be a leader in protecting our youth from this type of indecent reporting!
We hold everyone at the Daily News accountable who approved this material to be printed. This photo and article was a slap in the face to every person in our community who is working hard to teach our children — whether it be in the home, school, church, synagogue, children’s organizations, etc. — the high moral standards and values we all cherish.
It is disheartening to the many people who give of their time and money to the many youth organizations throughout the county in an effort to make a positive impact on young lives.
We feel the Daily News owes our community an apology.
Joel and Joan Cox, Naples
’Maxi’ problem
Editor, Daily News:
A photo of semi-nude drag queens was placed on the front page of the Neapolitan section.
That’s the same section that contains The Mini Page, which the paper describes as being “especially for kids and their families.”
By placing these two items in the same section of the paper, is it any leap to recast the whole intent as “Look, Naples — semi-nude drag queens — especially for kids and their families”?
Yes, stunning, tasteless and generally uncaring.
Daily News, how about a public apology to the parents and families of Naples?
Jon Cheek, Naples
Yours, maybe, but not ’ours’
Editor, Daily News:
I have never written a complaining letter in all my life — which is considerably long. In fact, the letters in the Daily News usually begin my day with a smile.
However, Monday morning all boundaries of decency were destroyed. The picture of two men in various degrees of undress was disturbing and disgusting. You put it in the section with comics and puzzles for our children.
You put it in the “Our World” feature.
It may be “your” world, but believe me, I think you should give us all a complete apology for ruining our day.
It — the picture — was totally unnecessary and vulgar.
Marilyn Johnson, Bonita Springs
What do you tell her?
Editor, Daily News:
I buy the paper faithfully every Monday so I can give The Mini Page to my 11-year-old daughter. Imagine my surprise when I found the feature-section front-page drag queen article (complete with pictures, no less!) firmly attached to the back page of The Mini Page.
I carefully tore off the front page and handed my daughter The Mini Page, who, of course, wanted to know why I was ripping up the paper. I told her that there was a completely inappropriate article on the other page, and I didn’t want her reading it.
You might want to consider these things in the future when you are doing the layout with a very adult-themed article.
Linda Philbrick, Naples
Already have all we need
Editor, Daily News:
This is Naples, Florida, not New York or Los Angeles. We will not tolerate this type of pornographic debauchery within the pages of the Daily News.
We have two fine porno shops on Airport-Pulling Road for anyone wanting to view such decadent filth.
Stephen R. McLean, Naples
What’s grand about it?
Editor, Daily News:
On Monday, my 10-year-old son retrieved the Daily News from the driveway, and right on the top is the Neapolitan section with a picture of two drag queens.
The “Grand Illusion” article is nothing more than the promotion of moral indecency and a politically correct public endorsement of homosexual behavior (one of two leading causes of the spread of HIV and the proliferation of pedophiles and child molesters) and has no place in a public newspaper.
My children should not have to be exposed to such trash, nor should the paper pass this off as news. Whatever happened to moral responsibility? Obviously, the editors at the Daily News can’t fathom the concept.
Russ Sharbaugh, Naples
Blue Monday
Editor, Daily News:
Since Mondays are difficult days for me, my condition certainly was not helped when I opened the Daily News and took a look at the disgusting picture of a cross-dresser’s bare behind!
What are you people thinking? Surely there must be more enriching activities to report on than this.
Just plain disgusting!
Kay Miller, Naples
Hypocritical
Editor, Daily News:
The Neapolitan section feature by Judy Lutz regarding the “drag queens” was certainly questionable.
The Monday Neapolitan section includes The Mini Page for children, plus the comics, of interest to children, and many other puzzles and columns of interest to children.
With all the negative publicity about the proper TV, Internet, etc., content that children should be watching and accessing?
The Daily News should now be included in the parents’ list of “objectionable access” for children!
Ann Gautraud, Bonita Springs
Not in my kitchen
Editor, Daily News:
I really feel I will have to cancel our subscription to your newspaper after seeing the Monday photo and story.
What could be your reasoning for printing such a photograph? I understand that there are “drag queens” out there, but must they be on my kitchen table in the morning? The only word I could use to describe that photo is pornographic.
I am trying to raise children in this poisonous culture, and I did not appreciate having to explain that picture!
Maureen Gerrity, Naples

I have to comment on all the hypocrites who have condemned the "drag queen" article. I think one nut even called the photos pornographic. I suppose all of you are good bible toating christians who believe guns are good and flesh is bad. I'm right, aren't I? You would rather see and support (by way of supporting the so called "right to bear arms" amendment (it really doesn't give us that right, but truth and reality is a lost cause in gun toating America) rampant killing in our schools, on the street, in malls, etc. than ban guns, but you would walk through hell to prevent a photo of a breast or even prohibit a mother from breast feeding in public. A very large portion of this country, maybe even a majority, is sick, very, very sick. I'm glad I'm not.

What I find interesting is that NDN has not commented to their readers in ANY way concerning our questions about the Drag Queen photo. I am a teacher and our principal sent out notice before class to pull the section from the paper before the students saw it. Now we are faced with having to examine the paper before allowing it in the classroom. No teacher would have been allowed to bring a photo like this into the class. Why does NDN feel that they can do what we cannot? The paper is in the classroom every day. This was not a wise choice and brings into serious question the judgement of those in charge of this publication.

Diana, there isn't enough data to say which year was warmer. Missing records, changes in recording stations make the data useless when breaking it down to such close tolerances. Go read McIntyres math on the " adjustments" used by Hansen , nothing adds up. Pure math doesn't lie, unless you cook the variables.

Joel,
Thank you for the wonderful letter you wrote about Parkinson's Disease. You brought up some excellent points in regards to the issues we face in the progression of this illness. I know all too well, the obstacle course the house can become on an off day!
Having spent the last year going through the process of Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery with my husband and playing the role of caregiver, it appears that the tables will be turned this year, as I begin my journey through 4 surgeries, monthly trips to University of Florida in Gainesville, and always knowing that while DBS is NOT a cure for this illness, and it WILL continue to progress, the hope of at least turning the clock back a few ticks is wonderfully evident in my husband since his surgeries.
Thank you for being a carepartner! We salute you!
Blessings,
Michael & Gretchen Church

AMEN Andrea. You only read a blurb when one of the local girls high school teams does well in post season. For months you could get a DVD of the Naples High football state championship game, however, the same was not true for the Barron Collier girls basketball team. The reason I was given by the sports editor was a staff member resigned which meant they had no one to cover it. WHAT!!
Girls sports will never get the coverage.
No, I do not have a family member involved in high school sports, just a fan.

After many years of title IX and a whole generation of females growing up and being given equal opportunity in all sports, isn't it time to combine both sexes on sports teams? Why separate them for sports?... we don't separate them for education.
Equal opportunity means just that... not "separate but equal"... just equal.
Why does the Great Dock Canoe Race award a "handicap" for just being female?... it isn't a handicap.

Had to laugh when I read Mr. Sharbaugh's letter. I was once his child's teacher and happened to be gay as well. He thought I was a wonderful teacher and his child was successful in my class. If he only knew...we are EVERYWHERE and most people have no idea.
I do believe the article should not have been attached to the section that is used in the classroom.
One more note, having been a person who has been to the club where the drag performances take place, usually 50% of the audience on their "show" nights are STRAIGHT! Yes, many straight couples! I always chuckle when Biff and Muffy walk in from dinner or the Phil and come there for the cheap drinks and dancing. One time I remember a couple years back, there was a table of about 12 all from Windstar Country Club whooping it up. All retired and straight, but when asked why there were there replied, "we love drag shows."
As I always say, "Only in Naples!"

AARGGHHH,
I totally agree.
A friend of mine and his partner really came in second in the amateurs, but were given fourth because of females in the canoes after them.
I find it insulting that they give females the handicap.
If they are going to do that, then they should have a female only category.

swampbuggy, you are absolutely correct and "thank you."
Google "y video rocky mountain high" and watch the video. The photos are spectacular yet still do not properly portray the true grandeur of this country. We have so much to be thankful for right in front of us if we only take the time and open our eyes.

The Neapolitan Section on Monday was distasteful and disgusting. How in the world could the NDN put that picture on the front of that section? I am sure there are better things to cover than that. There are more important things going on than 2 men who dress up as women!
#13 Posted by roxychic1017 on May 14, 2008 at 8:32 a.m. (Suggest removal)
The picture of the drag queens was not offensive to me, but I do think the picture was placed in the wrong place and I don't think the NDN was using discretion. I've seen that sort of thing, and it is a bit raunchy, and not everyone reacts in the same way. We should face reality, and there is nothing wrong with showing people that there are all kinds of people in the world. I don't know for sure, but I think the picture was a bit revealing to put in a daily newspaper. It could have been toned down a bit. I'm not a moralist, and it's hard to know how far a newspaper can go to bring the news to people.
Anyway, I think discussion is good, and maybe we can come to some kind of middle ground. There is nothing wrong in telling people that drag shows exist.
#14 Posted by rationalman on May 14, 2008 at 8:38 a.m. (Suggest removal)
P.S. Just to show how ridiculous people are, there was a picture of an obese bishop on the front page of yesterday's NDN. The bishop was an embarassment to look at. He had on some sort of red smock that hung almost to the ground and underneath it was some sort of petticoat. I don't know what you call clergy clothing. Anyhow he looked like a clown to me. I can't see how the clergy have the nerve to appear in public looking like drag queens.
Anyway, we go to such extremes in our society. We have drag queens that try to look like women, and I don't know what the clergy are trying to look like. They sure do look silly.
If someone from outer space would come to Earth and study human beings, they would probably leave wondering what kind of people inhabit this Earth.

letter to God:
According to your word, the Bible, you put humans on Earth, and you said that everything you created was good.
I have a lot of questions, and I can't find the answers in your book.
Why did you create humans to have free will or is that just what some of your followers believe? I am unable to find the answers to free will. I seems that it would be against your attributes of justice to let people do anything they feel like doing. Why would you create a home for humans and then let them trash it? Why do you let humans hate and kill each other?
Ever since humans have been on Earth there have been storms, floods, earthquakes and other natural disasters. It seems strange to me that you would create an Earth that is in such an unstable condition that it kills and maims millions of people and causes such misery for millions of people.
I have been on Earth for only a short time, but in my lifetime I've been aware of of many natural disasters, and many preceded me. I can't help but wonder why you don't do anything to protect humans from natural disaster. You put us here, and it seems you should have the responsiblity to help us. After a natural disaster, you don't do anything to heal people or alleviate their suffering.
I don't mean to be disrespectful, but I do ask these questions in all sincerity. Is it your plan that people have to suffer and die before you give them eternal life in some other world?
Until I am convinced that you have only the best intentions for us lowly human beings, I will have to believe that you don't exist or that you don't care about us.

Wayne Fuller - in your LTTE chastising FL homeowners for their tax advantages, you sign your letter as being from Naples. A cursory examination of Abe Skinner's Appraisal website indicates that you are not Homesteaded and not from Naples; you are from NJ. You bought a home here in 8/01 for $150K that is now valued at $215K by Abe.
Now assuming there is not more than one Wayne Fuller here in Naples that owns a home (and according to Abe, there is not), don't you think it just a bit disingenuous to not reveal that you are a NJ resident who knew the rules when you bought and is now grousing sour grapes? Isn't it enough that a comparable valued property in NJ would be taxed at 2x the level you pay here even though you are not homesteaded here? (OK, I'm guessing on this amt but it's what I've heard from other NJ residents). BTW, for the exorbitant taxes that you pay in NJ, how do you feel about the services you receive there? I bet the medians are all spotless and well manicured, huh? And the beaches are so clean, got those needles cleaned up right?
Come in from the cold and establish your FL residency or is there a reason you cling to your NJ homestead?
Another nice thing about FL vs. NJ is the transparency of public records. In NJ, there is a cottage industry for retrieving public records like the one I pulled on you. Takes about 2 weeks and costs money. Seems your state wants to make money on this service too.

Eddie - there is a pretty big difference between traditional garb of a culture and 2 men playing make-believe in a show. If you can not make that distinction, it is pretty sad. As I said yesterday, I believe you knew very well that your comment would be conisidered inflammatory to certain segments of the population and made the statement, not to generate a discussion, but to garner attention to yourself.
If you were a stock, I'd buy Bear Stearns before you; it's worth has a larger upside. At one time, your comments were worth reading and provided an alternative viewpoint. Now, they are not.

Billy,
Looks like we agree that 'The Band' may have been the best Rock and Roll ever offered and 'The Last Waltz' may have been the best performance.
Even Robbie Robertson recognized the great talent of the Staples Singers!
Hard to beleive that was thiry years ago. I still love it!

It seems to me that it is hypocritcal to be offended with drag queens and not be offended in looking at fat bishops wearing ridiculous looking garb in public that is not the traditional way men dress. What's the difference? It seems to me that the clergy are trying to draw attention to themselves. Could they be a little elitist? Why must the laity think the clergy are the aristocrats?
The Bible says we are all equal. Jesus was against class distinctions. The church is for a hierarchy of people. Some at the lower end of the ladder and others at the top, such as the Pope. That is not true Christianity and the clergy are not emulating Jesus. Jesus dressed like the common people.

Well, it looks like Hillary is still in La La Land. She supported the party's rules last October, didn't say a word about Florida and Michigan being disenfranchised, really didn't care, why? Because she thought she was going to win in a cake walk.
Now she wants to change the rules, reward her for breaking them by being the only one with her name on the Ballot in Michigan and somehow thinks that's fair being the other candidates followed the rules and didn't campaign there or have their names on the ballot.
Now, any person who thinks she's not crookeder than a pan of guts is out to lunch. And anyone who believes that Hillary is doing this so those poor Florida and Michigan voters can have their votes counted is also out to lunch. This is all about Hillary. Everything is about Hillary.
Also, she wants to change the rules again that the one with the most popular votes should be the nominee. She knows she can't win the delegates, so she's grasping for the popular votes. Of course, why would she care that that disenfranchises those states that have caucuses and not popular votes or along with popular votes. She now wants to discount state's caucuses.
How can anyone think of voting for a person that has no ethics, no honesty, no decency.
As for me, I can't look at those Clintons anymore. And I just pray that Barack doesn't have one of those strange accidents that occur when the Clintons think someone gets in their way.
I'm a Republican supporting Obama because I think he can help this country and has at least a semblence of integrity. He's not in the pockets of every power group out there. His interest is in us and our welfare.
I know West Virginia, a good ole boys state that wouldn't vote for a black no matter what, and also a state that still likes the Clintons, but also a state that is pretty conservative. Barack knew he'd lose W. Virg. big, but W. Virg. hardly represents the United States. We're further ahead than that.

Also, I don't care what those drag queens do. I don't have to look at them, and I don't care what the Pope or the Cardinals wear. Those are such small thing compared to all the problems that we have before us.
We have a horrendous foreign policy that can be the death of us. We have no domestic energy to speak of compared to our needs. We have an ominous debt with social security and Medicare looming large. We have a nation of people who don't have health coverage, a good portion because it's not a priority with them, fun gadgets are their priority.
We have a health care system that is too expensive and needs to find ways to cuts costs, like changing our tort laws and having medically educated juries oversee abuses. Take the ridiculous settlements and lawyers' profits out of it.
We need energy here: that includes nuclear, drilling in Alaska, off shore in the Gulf, wind mills, solar, hydroelectric, you name it. Ethenol does not sound as feasible since it takes so much energy to produce and raises the costs of food.
Our cars have to be built more gas efficient. It would be a great industry to promote.
Our heads should be put toward our own needs here instead of trying to rule the world.
Oh, and let Iraq take care of their own religious disputes. We should be out of there now.

Eddie - when you become elected to the Bishop's council, then you can work to change their traditional garb. Until then, you are an irritant and deserve the backlash on this forum.
Put it this way, if I were to criticize some of the traditional African style robes and headdresses that are worn daily and at ceremonial affairs, I would be torn to bits and rightly so by those of many different viewpoints and persuasions. If you read my comment more carefully, you'll notice that I did not criticize the drag queen's attire.

Even more impt, in the Nov 08 election, FL citizens will be voting to reduce taxes across the board by 25% and to further reduce the 2nd home/investment cap to 5%.
Does that make you happy now?

I wish we had a better medical system in this country. I believe in prevention, but we still need doctors and hospitals to take care of people who have accidents and have health problems, even if they caused it themselves.
I wrote a couple days ago that I like the term medical care better than health care, but I doubt that anyone will change the terminalagy. It's hard to change anything in this world.
Prevention means to change the way we live. People cause a lot of their own sickness. Eating the wrong foods and not getting enough sleep and exercise can cause a lot of sickness. People who don't practice safe sex can cause STDs. There a lot of things that people do that causes bad health.
Health means a state of wellness, where there is nothing wrong with a person.
We talk about health care when we mean medical care. Doctors don't make people healthy. We have to do it ourselves. I'm not saying we shouldn't go to doctors, but they give pills which only mask systems. Many pharmaceuticals have side effects which are worse than the sickness that is trying to be cured.
On television there is a pill for everything, and it is misleading because pills can't cure anything. I'm not against all drugs, but many times they are taken when they do more harm than good. Most doctors don't tell people how to be well through eating right and exercising and getting more rest, etc.
I'm not preaching to anyone, but our system is not set up to teach people health. Our system is medically oriented instead of prevention. I wish we had a health care system that was teaching people how to take charge of their own health.
The medical system is profit oriented and not set up for prevention. If people would take charge of their own health, we wouldn't have to spend a lot of money on health care. It is expensive to take care of people that have ruined their health through bad diet, little exercise, smoking, drinking, etc. Our society is a disease producing society. It is getting better, but there is still too much ignorance and profit making.
I stay away from doctors as much as possible. I don't take any drugs or supplements even if I'm told to. I feel better when I don't. I hate going to doctors. They send you to other doctors and give a lot of expensive tests and they still don't know everything. I believe the body heals itself, most of the time, if we do the right things for our body.
There are more and more obese people. It is caused by their awful diets and a sedentary lifestyle. I think it's terrible what our medical system and advertising is doing to our health.
I believe in universal medical care, because it is the most humane way to deal with the problem. If prevention was added to the care, there would be less sickness and it would cost less.

Truth, Don't you ever get tired of bashing the Clintons? I voted in Florida [ not for Clinton] and I want my vote counted. Hillary didn't screw up the Florida vote, she did beat Obama there and wants it to count. Anybody including Obama would want the same, wouldn't you?
Hillary also didn't screw up the Michigan primaries. She didn't take her name off the ballot like Obama did either. She won there also as Obama knew she would, and wants it to count.
What would Obama do if he were in Clintons situation? The same exact thing, they are ALL vote woman of allegedly ill reputes.
Voting belongs to the people, not legislators, political parties, lawyers, or supreme court judges.
Our whole country got screwed in 2000 for eight years, not just Florida, or the Florida voters. It shouldn't happen again.
Primaries vs cacuses > Cacuses are more fun and get people more involved, but they put the power of voting in much fewer hands and are not as fair as a standard primary.
All Presidential primaries should be held on the SAME day. EACH American vote should be counted the same, everyone should be able to vote even criminals, and the President should be elected by the total National vote. Just my opinion.

I think Fascism is just a handy name to label anyone someone doesn't like. Like Islamofascists. That had no connection to them what so ever either.

Guys - spurred by your back and forth on the fascism debate, I decided to look it up for myself on Wiki. Seems that your bickering has happened a thousand times before and the term has become more of a epithet than anything else. Mussolini coined the word fascismo and defined it as being a collectivistic ideology in opposition to socialism, classical liberalism, democracy and individualism. I think his original definition has now been completely muddied by so many on every side in their zeal to define the "other side" as fascist that the term ceases to be relevant.
It is said: "Historians, political scientists, and other scholars have engaged in long and furious debates concerning the exact nature of fascism and its core tenets."
Some have argued that the term fascist has become hopelessly vague over the years and that it has become little more than a pejorative epithet. George Orwell wrote in 1944:
...the word ‘Fascism’ is almost entirely meaningless. In conversation, of course, it is used even more wildly than in print. I have heard it applied to farmers, shopkeepers, Social Credit, corporal punishment, fox-hunting, bull-fighting, the 1922 Committee, the 1941 Committee, Kipling, Gandhi, Chiang Kai-Shek, homosexuality, Priestley's broadcasts, Youth Hostels, astrology, women, dogs and I do not know what else... almost any English person would accept ‘bully’ as a synonym for ‘Fascist’.[27]

"MeFein, I'm sure you can address those things that are pertinent to Obama that you don't like without resorting to using one inappropriate name, far, far from what Obama stands for."
Truth, when I use the term "fascist," I know what I'm talking about. People who think that the government should be able to take profits from a private business because they think those profits are "obscene" should not be allowed to breed, far less vote.
To think it has something to do with race is just intellectual laziness. I feel exactly the same about Hillary.
And POV, if you or your helper monkey have been reading my posts, you know that I've been consistent about the economic definition of fascism. Perhaps you should read this article and see if you don't see yourself in it.
"This philosophical counterpoint to socialism in which people were permitted to retain property and personal wealth while the state regulated how private property and wealth would be used to achieve the common good was given a name by Benito Mussolini when he founded the Fascist Party in Italy. He promised to give the Italians the same things that Roosevelt promised to give Americans. Mussolini called the political process for doing that Fascism. "
Does the pull-quote above sound like it applies to a windfall-profits tax?

Skippy, it's no secret that Ron Paul was my first choice. I donated to him, I wrote letters for him, my family all liked him, but the Republicans wouldn't let a real Republican win. I don't know what chance he has, but bless his heart for his persistence in getting the message out. Maybe one day our party will hear it.
The reason I'm backing Obama is because I think he is the one viable candidate who can get us out of this terrible foreign policy situation we're in. We need the good will of the rest of the world. We cannot be a pariah. That only burdens us beyond what we can bear.
I believe, as Ron Paul believes, that we have to get out of the Middle East and close our bases around the world and get to the business of reviving this country. Taking care of our debt and terrible trouble we're in monetarily.
Barack is the closest I can see as one who will not resort to involving us further in these military ventures that are burying us and not hurting our adversaries one iota.
I think he has the ability to talk to the leaders of the Middle East and perhaps use some influence to resolve some of the problems there.
I see him also as one who would tackle our energy problems. I have heard him mention nuclear energy. And I guess I know he's very bright and showed good judgment that we shouldn't invade Iraq and should avoid invading Iran.

Also Skippy, if anyone can resolve the Israel/Palestinian problem, he may be able to. That is at the roots of much of our Middle East problem. Much of the resentment that the Muslims feel toward us is because of our unbalanced alliance with Israel. We allow Israel all kinds of privileges and actions that we come down hard on the Arabs for even thinking about.
Until we are more even handed in our dealings with the people of the Middle East, we will have problems.
Also, Obama is not in the pocket of any special interests and seems to be as honest as a politician can be. He's fresh and new. I'm not saying he won't become tainted, but for now, he has very good intentions, and he doesn't appear to be any kind of socialist because he strongly stresses self determination and education. He wants to make an environment in which people can achieve, and he wants to make our country friendly toward business so they will stay here and not move out of our country.
When you look at him, remember he is half white. I don't know why when someone is half white and half black, people only see black. His white side is strongly dominent since he was raised by a white mother and white grandparents.
He understands both sides and can be a good example for all races.
As for Hillary. I'm waiting to see her do something to dispel these feelings I have about her trustworthiness. Just when I think maybe I can trust her, she does it again, blows it with lying or wanting to cheat.

I wish Dennis Kucinich would have stayed in the race. He was our best hope. Several of the Democratic candidates that dropped out would have been better than either Obama or Clinton. Politics is all about money and what is mainstream. If anyone doesn't have much money, they can't make it. Also if anyone has progressive ideas they won't make it. Dennis Kucinich would do his best to see that we had universal medical care. He also believed in preventitive health care and vegeterianism and eating right. It's true but sad, that we will never get a president that is not connected to corporate interests. I believe we are headed for fascism, because the corporations are in charge of everything. Money talks.
We don't even have Democracy. If we did we would have a poular vote and do away with delegates and the electoral college. Our system is a mess when presidential campaigns go on for two years and we spend millions of dollars to hear the same things over and over again.
Why don't people talk about what is important instead of talking about the insanity of electing any of the present people running for president. No matter who wins, things aren't going to change much. The insurance companies will still be in charge.
I will vote Democratic, because that is better than McCain. He would be the worst of the worst.

I don't agree with the breed/vote comment, (a bit over the top?) but I absolutely agree with your premise though; it is un-American. I'll go further though.
I believe that our biggest problem in this country has been the amount of influence that special interest groups have been able to bring to bear in promoting and passing legislation allowing certain industries huge advantages. I KNEW when the the Exxon-Mobil merger was allowed that this was bad business for America. I believe the same to be true today when the FCC is going back on its word to never never allow a merger of Sirius and XM Radio.
IMO, the biggest turnaround we could do for this country would be to implement term limits for Congress. That would even the playing field a great deal and benefit our country to a huge degree. Can you imagine any citizen not closely affiliated with a particular politician having a problem with this? Maybe the smaller states would who only have a few representatives but that was the intent to begin with.

naplesregular, I agree, but this is not the fault of the special interests. They have the First Amendment right to petition congress for redress of grievances. The problem is that we have allowed congress powers not allowed by the Constitution. If they didn't have it to sell, the special interests wouldn't be looking to buy.

If your goal is to destroy what is left of the economy, continue down the same path with McCain and MeNotSoFein.
Here's an idea. Ya should all put bags over your heads at the Republican convention like the Saints fans used to do when they were in the cellar. That way you hide your identity so as to avoid responsibility for your economic idiocy.

CO and Jimbo,
You know, a mother nursing is one thing. Naked ADULT butts, well that's a whole other fleshy ballgame. I dont think there is anything offensive about a mother giving her child what is best for him/her (exclusive of the obvious, i.e. drug abuse, alcoholism :). I dont even take offense to baby butts... but a guys hairy butt on the front page of a section is not something I, and probably most others, want to see, or want our children to see. That doesn't mean I/we are anti drag queen or anti gay, just dont want to have to see anyone's naked butt (male or female)staring us in the face over our morning coffee. Am I a prude? Maybe. Am I allowed to be a prude? Yep. I guess I could call you anti-prudist and take up arms, but I'll just write this letter and hopefully give you a good laugh instead.
And Jimbo, Honey, please do not let it all hang out. There is just nothing even remotely attractive about that comment LOL.

"Huge deficits, massive foreclosures, dollar value plummeting, and oil prices through the roof."
BB, your statements just prove you're an economic moron. "My" economic theory would predict deficits in light of spending more than you take in. The falling dollar is predicted by government monitory policy causing inflation. Foreclosures by falling demand for houses causing speculators to default on loans. And rising oil prices by increased demand.
Go ahead, keep thinking I don't know what I'm talking about. You're always good for a laugh.
