Naples plans parade down Fifth Avenue South to celebrate softball team state win

It's time for a parade.

The city of Naples is planning a parade for next week to honor the Naples High School softball team. The parade is tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m., May 21, said Naples Mayor Bill Barnett.

It's still in the planning stages, but Barnett said he expects the parade to come down Fifth Avenue South and end at the Cambier Park band shell where Barnett will read a proclamation honoring the team.

The parade would start at Third Street South and Fifth Avenue South, before ending at Cambier Park, said Community Services Director Dave Lykins. The city will not incur any costs for the event.

The event will need to be approved during Naples City Council's May 21 meeting, Lykins said.

“There isn't anybody in the whole world that would dare deny this,” Barnett said.

Naples High School's softball team won its first state title since 2001, beating Pembroke Pines 5-2 in the Class 4A state championship last week.

Great decision! Both of the girls teams that won state titles (basketball and softball) deserve the parade. If they give a parade for the boys, it is only fair that they give one for the girls.
