Local golf: Cape Coral's Shin advances, Tumbleson just short at Women's Open local qualifier

Eight years separate Michelle Shin and Catherine Tumbleson. But they’re worlds apart in their golf careers.

Shin, the 17-year-old junior from Cape Coral, shot a 2-over-par 74 to advance at the U.S. Women’s Open local qualifier at Imperial Country Club on Thursday.

“Some of my shots weren’t that solid, but I made a lot of clutch putts,’’ said Shin, who has verbally committed to Wake Forest and will play in the sectional qualifier at Loblolly Pines on June 9.

On the other hand, the 25-year-old Tumbleson, the former Catherine Cartwright, was out for a fun day with her husband, Jerrod, an assistant pro at Grey Oaks Country Club.

The Estero graduate and former two-time state champion shot a 77, with a tap-in birdie on the final hole, and missed by a stroke a 10-way playoff for the final three of the 19 advancing spots.

Tumbleson turned pro at 17 and played on the LPGA and Futures tours before getting married and going to college following the 2006 season.

“Jerrod and I had a fun time out there,’’ said Tumbleson, who returned to the course after picking up 4-month-old daughter Maci. “How I played is not horrible for never practicing. I’m not disappointed or anything. We had a lot of fun.’’

Even considering her play, it’s not enough to whet Tumbleson’s appetite to give professional tour golf another try.

“I’m loving being a mom and staying home and not having to pack my bag,’’ she said.

Nineteen players are packing their bags, including three surviving that 10-way playoff — Fort Lauderdale’s Lindy Duncan, Pearl Jin from California, and Aimee Cho from Orlando.

Those three, plus two others, birdied the first playoff hole, a par-5, and the three advancing players parred the second, a par-4.

There was a five-way tie for medalist honors at 72, including Lynn Valentine of Connecticut, who had Naples resident Paul Gelinas, normally a caddie at Calusa Pines Golf Club, as her caddie.

Bradenton's Jessica Korda, the 15-year-old daughter of former tennis star Petr Korda, tied for sixth with a 73 and advanced.

Besides Tumbleson, no other local players came close.

Madison Pressel, the 16-year-old sister of former Kraft Nabisco Championship winner Morgan Pressel, shot an 80 and failed to qualify. The younger Pressel had advanced to sectional qualifying in her previous attempts at Imperial.
