The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team split its final doubleheader of the season on Friday, losing the nightcap, 9-3, after winning the opener, 9-0, in Spartanburg, S.C.

The Eagles (38-15, 25-8) already had won the Atlantic Sun Conference regular-season title with a sweep of ETSU last weekend. FGCU, which is in its first season of Division I, is not eligible for the conference or NCAA postseason until after next season.

In the nightcap, the Eagles built a 3-1 lead behind RBIs from Graig Smith and Stephen Wickens in the second, and Tim Roberson's RBI single in the fourth.

USC Upstate scored five runs on seven hits in the sixth inning off FGCU starter Pete Woodworth (7-3).

In the opener, FGCU broke open a pitchers' duel with a combined eight runs in the final two innings to shut out USC Upstate, 9-0.

FGCU scratched out a run in the first inning. Josh Upchurch and Mikel Alvarez opened the game with walks, and Ozzie Borrell's single brought home Upchurch. From then on, FGCU starter Casey Coleman and Upstate's Scott Eckard traded zeroes until the eighth, allowing a combined five hits.

In the eighth, Roberson's three-run homer capped a five-run inning. Stephen Rassel's two-run double was the key hit in the three-run ninth.

Coleman (7-3) allowed three hits and struck out six in seven innings.
