Seth Fortenberry's tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the 11th gave the Tampa Yankees a 3-2 win over the Fort Myers Miracle at Hammond Stadium in front of an Education Day II crowd of 4,343.
Both teams traded runs in the fourth and ninth innings on Friday sending the game into extra innings for the second straight day. Damon Sublett led off the Yanks fourth with a walk and moved to third on James Cooper’s ground-rule double to left. A sacrifice fly from Mitch Hilligoss to right put Tampa on the board at 1-0.
A fielding error by Sublett at second base allowed Rene Tosoni to reach leading off the Miracle fourth and later score on Juan Portes' RBI double to left. After Fortenberry’s leadoff solo homer in the Yankees' ninth put Tampa up one, another clutch two-out hit by Whit Robbins, this one an RBI double to right, brought in Johnny Woodard for a 2-2 tie and forced extra innings.
Fortenberry smacked a one-out triple in the Tampa 11th before a wild pitch uncorked by Miracle reliever Frank Mata brought him in with the eventual game-winning run.
The series-finale takes place on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. as RHP Jeff Manship (4-1, 4.19) will square off against Tampa RHP Christian Garcia (0-0, 0.00). Saturday night’s action can be heard live on WMYR AM-140 and WCNZ AM-1660 beginning at 6:50 p.m.
