On May 20, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will present San Carlos Park Elementary fifth-grader Meaghan Bowman with a certificate recognizing her as the regional winner of the 2008 Florida Missing Children’s Day Statewide Fifth Grade Essay Contest.
Meaghan will also receive a $100 check. The presentation will take place during the school’s morning televised announcements at 7:30 a.m.
This year’s theme for the Florida Missing Children’s Day Statewide Fifth Grade Essay Contest was Safety starts with “S” but begins with “YOU”. The purpose of the contest is to promote safety awareness among Florida’s children and encourage them to proactively think of ways to keep themselves safe from those who would harm them.
Meaghan’s winning essay was chosen from the 10-county region that includes: Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Glades, Hendry, Highlands, Lee, Manatee, Okeechobee, and Sarasota.
Meaghan is one of seven regional winners. The statewide winner is from the Tampa area and will be announced at Florida Missing Children’s Day at the Capitol in Tallahassee on Sept.8, 2008.
