Spring football: Edouard's big play preserves Lely's 24-17 victory

— Lely staged a comeback in the second half and then denied a last-ditch effort by Countryside to win 24-17 over the host Cougars in their spring game on Thursday.

Rising senior Emmanuel Eduoard stopped Countryside quarterback James Chmelik at the four-yard line and kept Chmelik inbounds, forcing the clock to run out.

“That was a great play by Emmanuel,” Lely coach Steve Pricer said. “He’s one of our returning starters on defense and he demonstrated great leadership on that play and all night.”

The night belonged to the offense, though, as the Trojans amassed close to 300 yards rushing with two newcomers in the backfield.

Rising juniors Darian Hall and Frankie Pugh combined to rush for 246 yards on 31 carries and one touchdown apiece.

The Trojans used a mix of run and pass in the first half and managed to score on a 2-yard touchdown pass by Dennis Marcelin to Acener Estilien with just under four minutes left in the first quarter for a 7-7 tie. The Trojans struggled to put much of anything together the rest of the half as its passing game with Marcelin starting his first game as quarterback was inconsistent.

The Trojans made adjustments at halftime and, following a touchdown drive by the Cougars, those adjustments immediately showed.

“Our offensive line said to let them jam it down their throats and that’s what we decided to do,” Pricer said.

It became the Hall and Pugh show as the offensive line with all but one of its starters back from last year demonstrated their experience.

After Countryside scored again on a field goal, Pugh ran for 10 yards and then Hall exploded for a 52-yard carry with six minutes left in the third quarter to bring the Trojans to within three points.

The Lely defense stepped up and prevented Countryside from doing much of anything on its next possession.

When the Trojans got the ball back, Pugh immediately scored on a 36-yard jaunt right up the middle to put the Trojans up 21-17.

“The two of them showed what they’re capable of doing,” Pricer said. “We expect big things out of them next season.”

Gerry Reyes, who was the leading scorer for the soccer team this past season, booted a 36-yard field goal on the Trojans’ next possession for the final score.

“I’m proud of the way everyone played tonight on all sides of the ball,” Pricer said. “It’s only a spring game but we can take a lot of positive things from this type of effort. It’s very positive heading into next year.”

For the record it’s E-d-o-u-a-r-d, get familiar with that last name. I am surprised and overwhelmingly proud of my bother and teammates. While they still have room for improvement, they delivered. Stand up and take notice of the Lely High School football program.
