Bonitans flood City Hall to complain

— On a day when some area residents finally returned to their homes, others flooded City Hall to complain.

Bonita Springs City Council members heard from several citizens Wednesday night concerned about the city’s response to sheet flow flooding caused by Tropical Storm Fay.

Several hundred residents east of Interstate 75 were displaced for weeks when floodwaters from the Imperial River crept into their yards and homes. The residents of Saldivar, an RV park west of I-75, finally returned home after weeks in a shelter.

“We’re a neighborhood in crisis. We can not afford to have our property values turn into muck,” Quinn Street resident Theresa Breen said, pressuring the council for more action. “We can contact China in a matter of seconds, but we can’t walk to our mailboxes.”

Mayor Ben Nelson addressed the concern by saying that the city was attempting to use grant funding to repave roads and build ditches in the Quinn Street area, an action that would address flooding caused by rainfall. To address sheet flow, he said the city was working with area agencies to establish floways for the water to the south and the west.

Later in the meeting, Brett Lafferty, who had spoke on behalf of his mother and grandmother who live in the area, expressed satisfaction with the council’s comments concerning the flooding.

“This was a very informational session,” Lafferty said.

Truth be told, someone forgot about these people.

All that planning on flooding, and money, down the drain, very slowly.
