City of Bonita Springs passes several motions

— Bonita Springs City Council members heard from several concerned citizens Wednesday night over the city's response to sheet flow flooding caused by Tropical Storm Fay.

"We're a neighborhood in crisis. We can not afford to have our property values turn into muck," Quinn Street resident Theresa Breen said, pressuring the council for more action. "We can contact China in a matter of seconds, but we can't walk to our mailboxes."

Mayor Ben Nelson addressed the commenter by saying that the city was attempting to utilize grant funding to repave roads and build ditches in the Quinn Street area, an action that would address flooding caused by rainfall. To address sheet flow, he said the city was working with area agencies to establish floways for the water to the south and the west.

Later in the meeting, Brett Lafferty, who had spoke on behalf of his mother and grandmother who live in the area, expressed satisfaction with the council's comments concerning the flooding.

"This was a very informational session," Lafferty said.

Bonita Springs City Council decided Wednesday night that it will let a lottery choose the next resident of the home on the southeast corner of the intersection of Imperial Parkway and East Terry Street.

The council accepted the deed to the home earlier in the meeting, 6-0. The deed was given back to the city after being taken over by the county from its original owner during the construction of Imperial Parkway.

Under the lottery deal, one of 13 local government employees will be offered the chance to rent the three-bedroom, two and a half bath home for $700 a month. The city expects to demolish the home and use the property for some other purpose in the long run.

Bonita Springs City Council Adopted a resolution 6-0 Wednesday night that supports the addition of a second voting member for the city on the Lee County Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Bonita Springs City Council has approved 6-0 Wednesday night a new agreement with Lee County for bus services within the city limits.

The bus route will cost the city $185,537 for the next year. Lee County will pick up the rest of the total $466,460 cost of the route. The same services provided in the previous year will be provided the next year under the new agreement.

Riders who do not choose to purchase and use a LeeTran pass will be charged a fare of $1.25 per ride. The county expects to raise about $20,500 in fares over the next year.

The Bonita Springs City Council has approved Wednesday night 6-0 an agreement to allow for city use of Boston Road to and from the proposed Bonita Springs River Park along the Imperial River. The road runs parallel to U.S. 41 and along Angler's Paradise.

The private road runs through the Center of Bonita Springs near the intersection of U.S. 41 and Bonita Beach Road and intersects with U.S. 41 near the Tuffy Auto Service Center at that intersection.

The Bonita Springs City Council approved Wednesday night 6-0 maintenance agreements with 11 firms for services once provided by Lee County. The firms will fulfill the city's requests for bridge services and drainage, landscaping and irrigation maintenance, canal maintenance, roadway maintenance, traffic sign and pavement markings and natural disaster clean-up on an as-needed basis. The agreements authorize the hourly and daily rates to be used by the providers of the maintenance.

Bonita Springs City Council approved several special event permits Wednesday night, including two circuses headed to the Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Track in the next four months. The council approved 6-0 the Cole Brothers Circus, which will run from Nov. 20 through Nov. 23 and Circus Sarasota, which will be put on March 2009.

Council approved 6-0 the Bonita Springs Historical Society's "Evening in the Park" events, which will be held every second Friday of the month from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. between November 14, 2008 and April 10, 2009. The events, which are in their second year, will be held near the Liles Hotel and Plaza and will feature the work of artists utilizing the city's restored cottages.

Council also approved 6-0 a special event permit for the Bonita Springs Fruit Tree Club to hold their twice-annual event at Riverside Park. The tree sales will take place Nov. 8, Mar. 7, 2009 and Nov. 14 2009.

Councilman Bill Lonkart was not present at the meeting.
