NAPLES — Some of the top junior players in South Florida were in Naples this past weekend when the Academia Sanchez-Casal and the Naples Tennis Club hosted the Fall USTA Junior Super Series Tournament.

More than 160 competed for singles and doubles titles in five age categories. Due to rain on Sunday, a number of Monday’s finals were won by walkovers due to travel and school.

The Academia Sanchez-Casal Naples, in cooperation with the Community Blood Center, will host the Fall Junior Tennis Classic and Blood Drive on Nov. 8-9.

Boys and girls of all levels are eligible to compete in singles in five age divisions ranging from 10s through 18s.

Matches will begin at 9 a.m. each day and the registration deadline is noon Monday, Nov. 3.

Blood collection will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. that Saturday in the Naples Tennis Club parking lot. All donors will be eligible to win a one-year full tennis membership at the Naples Tennis Club.

The 22nd annual Naples Clay Court Tennis Championships are coming up at the Greater Naples YMCA.

With proceeds from the tournament to go to support junior instructional tennis programs at the YMCA, play is set for Nov. 1-9. The action is being presented by ASG Software Solutions.

Local amateurs and teaching professionals from across the county are to participate in this two-week event, with a host of local sponsors donating funds to support what organizers say is the largest amateur charity tennis tournament in the community.

Brett Hobden, YMCA Managing Director of Tennis, says financial assistance will be offered to qualifying families for the YMCA’s many youth tennis programs, including its after-school tennis academy, entry-level program, summer tennis camps, and the new USTA junior league team tennis program.

The clay court special is open to the public and divisions are available for men’s and women’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles at all levels of play from beginners to Open. The entry fee for mixed doubles and doubles is $60 per team and $30 per person for singles. Players can register for two or more events and the entry fee is $25 per entry.

The next “Girls of Autumn” tournament is on the horizon at the Quail Creek Country Club. The 3.0 level was played Wednesday and the 3.5 tourney is set for Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., with lunch to follow. The format will be a fixed partner round-robin and the entry fee is $24 per person, which includes tennis, drinks, lunch and prizes. Players in this event must have a 3.5 NTRP rating.

The next USPTA/JusTennis Junior Tennis Series event is a doubles tournament Saturday at Vineyards Community Park. For this event, players sign up individually to play with different partners in a round-robin format. Today is the registration deadline. At the City of Marco Island Racquet Center, pro Bill Van Glabek says the City of Marco Island Parks & Recreation Fall NTRP Championships will be held Oct. 10-12. Play will feature men’s and women’s singles and doubles from 2.5 through 5.0 levels.

The tournament is USTA and FTA sanctioned.

The entry fee is $40 for singles and $20 per player for doubles and the deadline is 5 p.m. on Oct. 7. Checks should be made payable to the Marco Island Racquet Center. All entrants must belong to the USTA. Find membership information online at the usta.com Web site.

Sponsored by the Collier County Community Tennis Association, the CTA LEAGUE Fall 2008 league is an interclub adult tennis league with doubles play at all levels. Leagues for the fall are the Day League, Mixed Doubles League and Night League, all beginning the third week of this month and continuing through mid-December.

The Naples Tennis Club & Resort (Oct. 25-26) and the Marco Island YMCA (Jan. 17-18) will host two of the 22 Florida Tennis Cup tournaments to be held throughout the Sunshine State through March of 2009. The Florida Tennis Cup series will wrap up with championship finals in April at the Woodfield Country Club in Boca Raton.

Florida Tennis Cup tournaments consist of doubles and mixed doubles matches for all ages and all levels. Divisions are offered according to the combined ages of the players. Matches are fast-paced because of a compressed format. Most of the tournaments will be completed in one day.

Winners, finalists, semifinalists and consolation winners from the “local” tournaments will be eligible to play in the championship finals.

The entry fee for each tournament is the same: $15 per player. Competitors may play in more than one event.

The Collier County Women’s Tennis Association has set Oct. 18 as the date of its annual meeting and luncheon.

The group always welcomes new members, new players and new board members.

The CCWTA is a non-profit organization that is managed and maintained by five executive board members, six directors and positions of tournament director, publicity and membership. The board members serve a two-year term. Several vacancies within the board are currently being filled. The commitment involves four meetings a year.

Frank Carleton, USPTA Tennis Director at Tarpon Cove Yacht and Racquet Club, will hold a men’s 3.0 pre-season tennis camp Oct. 8-10. The focus will be on doubles in the intensive three-day, three-hour program emphasizing high speed in play drills, doubles formations and strategies and match play.
