Prep football: Golden Gate faces tall order against Venice
VENICE (4-0) at GOLDEN GATE (0-4), 7:30 p.m.
• Key players: Venice — QB Trey Burton, RB Dri Archer, LB Ethan Mix, DE Ben Steele; Golden Gate — QB Kenneth Mouton, RB Claudius Knowles, LB Zach Izbicki.
• What to watch for: Venice coach John Peacock is looking for improved play from Mouton and the entire Golden Gate team. “He’s going to make freshman mistakes, but he might come alive Friday night. It could be his coming out party,” Peacock said. “We’re fully expecting them to come out and give us a great game. (Golden Gate) has a lot of very athletic kids. They’re young and going through growing pains, but they have talent.”

NAPLES The rainy season might be coming to a close but it figures to keep pouring on the Golden Gate football team tonight against Venice.
It’s been like this for Golden Gate so far this season — zero wins, four losses, 48 points scored, 178 points allowed and a freshman at quarterback.
Venice comes into tonight’s 7:30 matchup 4-0 and averaging 31 points a game. The Indians’ starting quarterback, junior Trey Burton, has accounted for more than five times the offensive touchdowns than the Titans’ offense (16 to 3).
The Indians are big (Burton is 6-foot-3, 225 pounds while every starter on the offensive line tops 250 pounds), strong and looking for revenge.
Last year, the Titans (Class 3A) spoiled Venice’s homecoming, surprising the Indians 19-14, which has Venice wary but motivated.
“We’re not looking at records,” Venice coach John Peacock said. “They came up to our place and beat us last year. Our kids are looking get back at them for that.”
Golden Gate’s propensity to create turnovers could provide a ray of light against Class 5A Venice. In the Titans’ victory last year, the Golden Gate defense recovered four fumbles. In last week’s game against Lely, the Titans defense caused three turnovers.
“I thought our defense played better than they have,” Golden Gate coach Dave Tanner said.
To give Golden Gate an added boost, junior linebacker Wilbert Garcia will return to the Titans lineup tonight after missing the first four games because of an offseason injury.
Golden Gate’s defense will focus on Burton, who has been the whole show for the Indians this season. He is second on the team in rushing with 316 yards and nine touchdowns. Burton has thrown for 749 yards and seven scores.
“We really haven’t put a full game together yet,” Peacock said. “We’re looking for our kids to get off to a good start and establish the run game.
“We’ve been working really hard with our offensive line this week and, hopefully, we’ll get on track. We’ve had a couple of missed assignments here and there and it has really cost us.”
