— The Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf team won its first tournament of the fall, firing a final-round 277 to beat 14 other teams in the Mission Inn Collegiate Classic on Sunday at El Campeon in Howey-in-the-Hills.

The Eagles had a 2-under-par 850 total in the 54-hole event, beating Jacksonville by 12 strokes. Stetson was third at 22-over, and Johnson & Wales was a stroke behind in fourth.

"The whole time, they just kept to the game plan of hitting the right clubs on the right holes,'' FGCU coach Dr. Jim Suttie said. "They were very disciplined in their play, and everybody contributed. We played extremely well.''

FGCU's Kyle Hammond, who was the overall leader after 36 holes, tied for third with teammate Michael Hart at 2-under 211, three shots behind Mark Whisenant of Jacksonville State.

FGCU's Brandon Pena shot matched Hart's final-round 68 and was seventh at 216. Zach Robinson shot a 69 and tied for 17th at 221. Gulf Coast High School graduate Josh Leppo tied for 22nd at 222.

The Eagles had been seventh in a nine-team event, and 14th in a 16-team tournament going into the tournament. FGCU will play in the Big Five Classic in Philadelphia this coming weekend.
