NAPLES For 17-year-old Amelia Krauss the opportunity to shake hands with Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin was totally worth the sunburn after five hours baking in front of the Naples Beach Hotel on Monday morning.
“That was like my biggest hope, to shake her hand and meet her,” said Krauss, who skipped school with other Republican teens to see the Alaska governor as she stopped in at the hotel for a $1,000 per-person reception. “She’s a real person. She represents a real American.”
On the other hand, Ivan and Pearl Struminger were less than thrilled with Palin’s arrival, standing across the street from the hotel with a sign reading “Sarah Palin is a Fraud.”
“Somebody who she never met before walked up to her and said ‘How would you like to be vice president with a good shot at being president,’” Ivan Struminger, 66, said. “Our goal is to expose her inconsistencies and unpreparedness for the office.”
Supporters and protesters began arriving at the hotel around 8 a.m. By the time Palin arrived shortly after noon, about 60 supporters of her and Republican Presidential candidate John McCain, and about 20 supporters of Democratic candidate Barack Obama and his running mate Joe Biden gathered outside the hotel.
“They’re being pretty peaceful,” Naples police officer Ian Rudnick said of the crowd.
Arriving in a “Straight Talk Express” bus, Palin waved to the crowd as she entered the hotel through the back entrance. About 15 minutes later she reemerged, shaking hands and signing autographs for supporters gathered on the other side of a hedge along the parking lot.
When asked if she thought she and McCain would carry the Sunshine State, Palin said “I do. I’ll predict we’ll win Florida. I’ll betcha.”
At the corner of Gulf Shore Boulevard and South Golf Drive, 35-year-old Lea Derence held a sign reading “Palin is Anti-Choice. Honest Pro-lifers Don’t Massacre Animals,” referring to Palin’s support in Alaska for shooting wolves from aircraft to boost the state’s moose and caribou population. The back of her sign read “Abort Palin.”
“Maybe the world would have been a better place if she wasn’t born,” Derence said. “If she ends up being the vice president of this country and McCain dies, we’re going to be in a lot of trouble.”
Joe Hennessy, 75, of the Naples Pro-life Council said of Derence’s sign: “I don’t know how to react. It’s terrible.”
Local real estate developer Jack Antaramian stood at the corner of Goodlette-Frank Road and Fifth Avenue Monday morning with Obama/Biden signs. Antaramian, who had been at the intersection since 9 a.m. Monday, said he had received honks from supporters and a few thumbs-up, but also saw some negative reactions, with people even stopping to talk to him about his position on the candidates.
Antaramian said two members of his family have lost their homes and believes the Democrats have what it takes to turn the economy around.
“It is time for a real change,” he said. “I am in a position to help the people in my family, but others are not. ...John McCain said the economy was on sound footing. He doesn’t know what he is talking about.”
Antaramian, who is hosting a fundraiser for Biden during his visit to Southwest Florida on Wednesday, said Biden would be a better No. 2 for the country.
“Tina Fey would be a better vice president than Sarah Palin,” he said, referring to the former "Saturday Night Live" head writer and cast member who has been playing Palin on "Saturday Night Live."

There was a time when Wisdom was respected and wise persons were listened to with reverence. Their opinions were greately appreciated and Nations were governed by them. Nowadays lack of knowledge is taken for charisma !

Not much into politics here. What an appropriate place for Antaramian to protest. The corner of 41 and Goodlette. The same property he purchased then tore down buildings to let it sit in perpetuity for we in Naples to drive by each day and admire the weeds. Two of your family members lost their homes? Where where you? Why did you not help them? I suggest cleaning up your nasty eyesore of a lot in the middle of Naples, help your family with their problems, once done with that then go stand on the street and campaign for your favourite politician.

Was she the guest at a $10,000 plate lunch with a huge Bush supporter????

It sounds like Antaramian and Obama have something in common - they both can afford to help their family members with their housing problems, but it appears that neither do so.

I think Jack has a good point there. Tina Fey WOULD make a better candidate for V.P. and better looking too. At least Fey is not a political "wind up doll".

Jack and Raven have a good point there, but if they comb their hair different it may not show.
I know that I was solidly in the McCain camp (as the lesser of two evils) until he voted for the bail out. I expected Obama to vote for it as I already knew that he had no respect for the peoples desires, but McCain's vote took the wind out of my sails.

“Our goal is to expose her inconsistencies and unpreparedness for the office.”
As oppossed to how over-prepared and qualified Barack Obama is to be President?
I still haven't heard anything that convinces me he is ready for the job. Sarah Palin is the ONLY PERSON on either side of the ticket with any practical executive government experience.
Being editor of your college newspaper does not qualify you to hold the highest elected office in this country.

Re: Post #9 - Has anyone actually stopped to consider that Biden may be closer to the presidency than Palin?
Not that I would ever wish ill on anyone, but no matter how much you try to spin it, there are people in this country (and around the world) who would sooner see an old white guy with a "normal" name in the White House than a young black guy with an Islamic sounding name, and who would take actions to make that happen.
I can't imagine that the Secret Service is looking forward to that proepect.

To 35-year-old Lea Derence - you should be ashamed of yourself, to have said “Maybe the world would have been a better place if she (Palin) wasn’t born" is not only shocking. I guess this is to be expected from another Democrat who loves to mudsling and be spiteful and hurtful. Whatever, McCain and Palin, you go!!!!!!! Our next President and Vice President, a team of Mavericks!

To local real estate developer Jack Antaramian take note - Tina Fey would make a better real estate developer! And Sarah Palin will be the best VP to next President we-know-his-middle-name-and-aren't-afraid-to-say-it McCain!

What gets me is we are all suffering in this economy and she is riding around in a jet cruising the country like nothing is happening. Its also comical that as gov of alaska she used her position to try and fire a state trooper and when there was not enough evidence she fired the person that heads the state troopers out of spite. What kind of vice president would she be just like cheney. people wake up!

I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight..
• If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're "exotic, different." Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, a quintessential American story.
• If your name is Barack, you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim. Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.
• Graduate from Harvard Law School and you are unstable. Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, and you're well grounded.
• If you spend 3 years as a community organizer, become the first black
President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law
professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with
over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and
Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate
representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and
serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.
• But if your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.
• If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising two
daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.
• But if you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your
disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.
• If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the
proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.
• But if, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other
option in sex education in your state's school system, while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you're very responsible.
• If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a
prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city
community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't
represent America's.
• But if your husband is nicknamed "First Dude", with at least one DUI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.
• OK, I’m much clearer now.

Re: Post #20 - I'm looking forward to seeing the BUS that Biden arrives in on Wednesday. I've got $100 cash that says he flies in, too.

Biden will come into town riding a double bike with Gore I'm sure. He wouldn't do something like fly on a jet and add carbon emissions! Libs never say one thing and then do another. How dare you suggest a thing.
A Havard education isn't what it used to be. Only 60% of Americans pay taxes and Obama said that he is going to cut taxes on 95%. He is a liar. You can't cut taxes for people who don't pay them!
#23 Posted by vyger on October 7, 2008 at 9:38 p.m. (Suggest removal)
vyger,
Let's see who lies... only 60% of Americans pay taxes? Really? Jeez.
Obama will cut taxes on 95% of people WHO NOW PAY TAXES. It is not that difficult. Breath, and try it again.
#24 Posted by flsandy on October 8, 2008 at 10:27 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Flsandy,
First off, Obama grew up in a variety of locations, including Indonesia and Hawaii. I'd say that is pretty exotic for your average American.
Barack's father was a Muslim, at least culturally. In Islam, if your father is a Muslim, that makes you a Muslim.
Why is it that Barack hasn't released his transcripts from Columbia?
So exactly what did Barack write as President of the HLR? One piece, heavily edited, does not make him an examplar of the position. As a Constitutional lawyer, what cases did he try before the USSC? Name one bill that Obama actually wrote as State Senator -- not the ones his mentor gave him credit for, any that he actually wrote. He hasn't spent 4 years as a Senator. He spent 143 days as a US Senator before launching his campaign. Since then, his career as a Senator has taken a back seat to his campaign. In those 143 days, what legislation has he authored? All he has to do to sponsor legislation is sign his name. BFD. He has not one iota of executive experience.
If you don't attend a Christian church in those 20 years, no, you are not a Christian. Besides, church attendance is not the hallmark of a Christian. The hallmark of a Christian is a personal relationship to Jesus Christ. That relationship bears fruit. If the fruit isn't there, the relationship isn't there. In Obama's case, the fruit is not there.
Exactly is age appropriate sex education for a kindergartener?
Alaska does have other sex education programs other than abstinence. You are a liar.
Are you intimating that Michelle Obama is a stay at home wife? Then, again, you are a liar.

VYAGRER - PLEASE TRY AND GET THIS STRAIGHT, and I apologize to all other fellow bloggers here for using the caps. BUT ONCE AND FOR ALL BARACK OBAMA SAID HE WOULD LOWER TAXES FOR 95% OF WORKING AMERICANS; THAT MEANS 95% OF SALARIED AND WAGE EARNING AMERICANS WHO NOW PAY TAXES. Or, as you know them, your,'JOE SIX PACK' crowd as they are so condescendingly characterized by your lantern-jawed lipsticked sugar plum OF A V.P. CANDIDATE, Palin.
