Sports News for Kids: Three Naples Gators teams win on 50th homecoming

— The Naples Gators Youth Football & Cheerleading League celebrated 50 years of youth football in Collier County on Saturday with three wins over the Jaguars of Miami Lakes.

The 125-pound senior team, led by the running of Breon Brown and Michael Simmons and an offensive line that opened up big holes for them, ran over the Jaguars 32-6 winning their fourth game in a row.

The 105-pound team, led by touchdown scores from Antonio Carbonaro, Jorquel Condomina, Tupac Isme and Nathan Doyle, cruised to a 38-0 win and moved their record to 4-3. And the 90-pound team picked up their third win of the season with a 19-0 shutout over the Jaguars. Patrick Pierre, Chris Riley and Jordan Falls all had touchdown runs for the Gators.

In other Gators action, the 115-pound a 31-25 decision in overtime. Tyler Byrd, James Patterson and Bryson Smith led the way on the ground for the Gators, as they dropped to 4-3. The 75-pound team came up on the short end of their game with the Jaguars. Tahron Reese led the way on the ground.

The Naples Gators want to thank all who participated and helped out to make the 50th Gators Homecoming a success. The Gators next face off against the West Kendall Dolphins this Saturday at Fleischmann Park Football Field. The Tropic Wave, a local 10-and-under fastpitch softball team, finished runner-up recently at the ISA Fort Myers Challenge Tournament. The Wave fought through the heat to make it to the title game in the event held Sept. 21 and 22.

Nicki Tisch led the team on the mound, while Brooke Gutterridge contributed solid catching and offense. Other Tropic Wave players are April Alvarado, Courtney Cormier, Kaytlyn Drouin, Emily Forhay, Nicole McKelvey, Michele Peterson, Sydney Tulin and Madison Whisman.

Winning Ways of Southwest Florida is holding a preseason basketball camp for middle school girls looking to hone their skills and get in shape for the upcoming year. The Saturday camps will be from 2 to 4 p.m. this weekend through Oct. 25 at First Baptist Academy in North Naples.

The high-intensity training program will focus on position-specific training, speed and agility and individual and team concepts. The cost is $69 for all three sessions. The fee will be prorated for those who can't attend all three camps.

Naples Progressive Gym, located on Pine Ridge Road, begins its fall session Oct. 20. Registration for classes, which run through Dec. 17, are on-going. Register before Oct. 3 to receive the Early Bird discount.

Naples Progressive Gym also offers family open gym for kids in kindergarten and younger every Friday from 6 to 7 p.m. A school-aged open gym is from 7 to 8:30 on Fridays for kids in eighth grade and younger. There will be no open gym on Oct. 31.

NPG also has adult open gym and tumbling classes on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 9 p.m. Toddler open gym is from 11 a.m. to noon every Tuesday. The cost is $10 per child, and the parents jump for free. Call 598-3700 for more details.

Interstate Baseball will be hosting baseball camps on Oct. 25 and 26 and Dec. 28 and 30.

The camps are for ages 7 through 15 and will be at Community School of Naples. The Fall Camp in October costs $100 and includes throwing lectures, defensive positioning, hitting lessons, running and sliding, pitching instructions, specialty position breakout sessions and sportsmanship. Lunch is included each day. The Holiday Camp in December costs $195.

Florida Athletics Cheer and Dance, a Naples cheerleading and dance facility, is taking applicants looking to join its fast-growing cheerleading team. Florida Athletics is located inside Gymnastics World of Naples on Trade Center Way.

Every staff member of Florida Athletics Cheer and Dance, including the junior advisors, is a certified instructor or has attended of a certified coaches conference. Owner Dinna Gilroy recently received her master certification in cheerleading and safety principles. Instructor Cassie Caso received certification in stunting and tumbling.

Florida Athletics offers teams for children ages 3 and up. The facility provides athletes with professional training in a safe, fun and positive environment. Florida Athletics is a proud member of the United States All-Star Federation and has NCSSE certified coaches.

Registration is underway for the fall season of youth sports at both the Greater Naples and Bonita Springs YMCAs. This year's sports include t-ball, basketball, cheerleading, flag football, soccer and volleyball.

The Greater Naples YMCA is offering basketball leagues for kids ages 3 through 17, soccer leagues for kids ages 3 through 6, and a volleyball league for kids ages 9 through 14. The Bonita Springs YMCA is offering t-ball leagues for kids ages 3 through 6, basketball leagues for kids ages 5 through 14, flag football leagues for kids ages 7 through 11, cheerleading for kids ages 5 through 12, and a new volleyball league for kids ages 6 through 15.

The YMCA Youth Sports program teaches sports with the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility in mind. The Y emphasizes fun, fair play, skill development and teamwork. For registration forms and more details, visit www.ymcapalms.org.

Sign-ups have begun for the Collier County Lacrosse Association's fall league. Players can sign up for the high school league (ages 14 to 18) or the youth league (6 to 14) at www.collierlax.com. All registrations will be taken online. There will be boys and girls leagues.

The high school program is every Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Golden Gate Community Park. The youth league also is underway and meets from 6:30 to 8:30 on Wednesdays at Vineyards Community Park. The cost is $50 per player.

The Little South fall volleyball league, a 13-and-under league sponsored by USA South Volleyball, has started its first season in Southwest Florida. The program was established for players without a fall school program or who just want more training.

The Little South fall league is split into two divisions based on skill level. The Black team is for advanced players in grades six through eight. The team will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. every Monday through Oct. 27. The Purple squad is for third- through eighth-graders with little to no experience and meets 6 to 8 p.m. every Wednesday through Oct. 29.

Each weekly session includes one hour of training and one hour of games. Both teams meet at the Estero Parks and Recreation Center, and the cost for each is $200 for the season. There are 28 spots available on each team.
