— Hodges University is enhancing its Immokalee learning site with a new computer room through the support of $15,000 in grant funding from the Jacob G. Schmidlapp Trust, Fifth Third Bank trustee.

“With this grant, Fifth Third Bank is making a significant and lasting impact on Hodges University and its mission to provide educational opportunities for the residents of Immokalee,” university president Terry McMahan said in a prepared statement.

“The gift of a quality education is one that pays dividends long into the future, and we acknowledge Fifth Third Bank for their continued dedication to our community.”

To commemorate the donation, Hodges University will dedicate a plaque naming the computer room at the Immokalee site in honor of the trustee.

A dedication ceremony will be held at the campus beginning at 11 a.m. Friday.

Born in Piqua, Ohio, in 1849 to illiterate German immigrants, Schmidlapp was a self-taught businessman who ran the family grocery store at age 12.

At age 27, he founded Union Savings Bank, which merged into Fifth Third Bank in 1919.

In 1903, Schmidlapp established a trust to help improve lives by funding arts, education, health and human services, and community development initiatives.

Today, through the management of Fifth Third’s investment professionals, the Jacob G. Schmidlapp Fund has grown from $250,000 to nearly $70 million in assets.

Fifth Third Bank has managed private trusts and foundations for over 100 years and today, contributes to hundreds of charitable organizations throughout Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Florida, West Virginia, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Missouri and North Carolina.
