Sidelines: A foot can change a season

Finding unique story ideas for the Citizen Sports section can often be a challenging task.

Two weeks ago I was photographing Barron Collier in their game against Golden Gate. I watched as their kicker, Marvin Kloss, booted ball after ball not just in, but through, the back of the endzone.

He wasn’t alone.

There were legs like him all over our area. Impressive to say the least. Coaches seem to share my appreciation for opening up scoring opportunities with the ability of 45-plus-yard field goals followed with kicks through the endzone that could squelch the possible ‘big play’ by the opposition.

I thought it might be for a good Citizen feature. My publisher shared my interest.

And then, blast it! I’m scooped again by the Daily. But it’s okay.

I remember sitting down with Golden Gate head football coach Dave Tanner, two weeks prior to their first preseason game. It was just days after he learned he wouldn’t have his senior quarterback Michael Spano.

Was he concerned? Of course. Worried? He didn’t seem to be.

Tanner surprised many when he went with freshman Kenneth Mouton at quarterback. More of a concern for him was the kicking game.

His answer, as reported in the Daily this past week by Adam Fisher, was found in Titan sophomore, Jorge Moreno.

I was behind the endzone last Friday at Golden Gate when Moreno lined up for a 38-yard field goal against Venice.

Right through the uprights.

Unfortunately, those three would be the Titans’ only points on the scoreboard in their 42-3 loss.

But, young Moreno provided a bright spot. The week prior he had made two kicks; one from 37 yards out and his longest of the year from 41-yards, at Lely. On the season he is three for five on field goal attempts.

When the Titans have made it into the endzone for six touchdown points, Moreno has been money for the extra point, racking up a perfect six for six on extra point conversions.

Games are being changed in big ways at the feet of other kickers such as Gerry Reyes at Lely and Barron Collier’s Kloss.

Gulf Coast’s Connor Goulding is four for four on field goals with his longest being from 46 yards.

Football is a game of inches, but these players are proving that one foot can make a difference. One foot can change a season.
