NAPLES Bargains, gaming and drinks, oh my!
More than a year after originally planning to open, the Big Cypress Market Place opened Friday on U.S. 41 East about four miles east of Collier Boulevard.
The Market Place, which includes an air-conditioned flea market, food court, produce market, winery, tiki bar, gaming parlor and live entertainment, was originally slated to be completed in September 2007.
“It’s taken a long, long, time,” said Keith Basik, president of Basik Development. “I think at the end of the day, it’s better than anything we envisioned on the onset and the end result is something that will appeal to a lot of people.”
And in spite of the delay, visitors were pleasantly surprised with the results.
“I’m really impressed,” said East Naples resident Karen Smock, 56, while perusing though Granny’s Gift Nook with her husband Steve, 59. “They (the market) have a lot of variety. They’ve got the produce, they have the jewelry and they have the little things you can pick up for gifts. We’ll definitely be coming back.”
About 150 flea market vendors, or about 90 percent of the total number of spaces available, opened Friday, said Clare Ulik, marketing director for Basik Development, the developer and operator of the new business.
Among those open for business Friday were Just Tools & More and Big C’s Seasoned Salsas, whose owners were impressed with visitor turnout.
“I’m surprised, because it’s only a soft opening,” said Lisa Lawson, co-owner of Just Tools & More. “I’m very excited. I think it (the market) is a good thing people have been waiting for a long time.”
Lawson’s booth neighbor, Olga Conde, who owns Big C’s Seasoned Salsas, agreed.
“Something like this is almost like going to the mall, but not being in a mall,” said Conde, adding that all the different shopping and entertainment options would appeal to visitors. “That’s what’s going to bring the people in.”
And come they did.
“It’s been busy all day,” Ulik said. “We probably had between 2,000 to 3,000 come through.”
For Chicago resident Tony Arsini, 37, Friday’s visit to the marketplace was a family affair.
“My father lives on Marco Island and we’re all visiting,” said Arsini, who was accompanied by his son Easton, 3. “We’ve always done the flea market thing in Chicago. We figured it was open, so we took a chance.”
Big Cypress Market Place will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays through Sundays.
Ulik said Basik plans to extend hours for the gaming parlor soon, and for the entire business during season.

Wonder how long this will last in today's economy? What small business can afford $600+ month rent for just Friday - Sunday & survive? And then there is the location - not the best of places for a new business unless you live out in the Everglades.

Would love to go there, however not many are going to spend several bucks in fuel to travel way out to BFE to be sold tourist trinkets and garbage like the Flamingo market.

Might be a fun afternoon. I'm going to go. I hope they do well.

According to the floor plan there is only 1 set of restrooms. They had thousands of people there today already? Man, I hope someone has checked the potties! :-)

VeniVidiVici,
A winery as in buy a case of wine and take it home, not as in a wine bar, get drunk and end up in the everglades.

I, for one, am relieved some of the snobs on here will not be in my part of town (out in the middle of no where). Lely and Veronwalk are in the boonies, ladies and gentlemen.
God, some of you are just not worth the space on this Earth; you're so dang negative DAILY! I hope it does well.

The owners and developers of this place are very good people.
I hope everyone stops by and takes a look at it, you never know how something may be unless you give it a shot.

Well, at least VeniVidiVici will not be getting drunk at the new facility. We won't have to worry about 3-V's leaving Pelican Bay.

Are you a recovering alcoholic VeniVidiVici?
If so that would explain your posts. Some of us can enjoy a drink or two and not kill others on US 41.

Relax everyone. It is a new business in Collier mostly with mostly small business people. I will go there and wish them well. God bless.

Even if they serve drink - it's the people doing the drinking that are to blame if they wish to go overboard! Besides - the place is only open - Friday - Sunday until 4:00pm. Some of you just can't help yourself to be so negative and suggest that everything is bad without even learning about it first. Get - a - Grip! and Get-a-life! Learn to enjoy something once in a while instead of being doom and gloom. This is a nice place with entertainment for family, food and loads of small business people hopeing to make a living or add to what they have. You would not even give them a chance because you wish to be so downbeat. You should be ashamed. This market is an upscale market with quality items for sale just as you would find in any retail store. The owners work on a smaller scale and are friendly people. Try it - you just might be surprised!

last time I checked it's not the bar shoving drinks down the throat of an alcoholic that will drive drunk. It's the durnk. My GOD it's ok to have a glass of wine and shop a little. I don't even DRINK, but I think it's ok to have a drink. Seriously, so many of you on here are, well, depressing.

This is one of the few commercial projects in Collier County that will be successful. This area has been neglected forever. There's plenty of local people and tons of trailer park snowbirds in this area. I'll bet anyone a cup of coffee and a donut that this place will see more business this year then all the empty store fronts at Airport and Vanderbilt Beach. I'm very glad of the location and impressed with the structure and venue.
Good job Basiks. And good luck!

Crotchety posters. (Probably just too hot sitting in their condos with the thermostat turned way high to save money, since they "lost" their retirement they were gambling with in the stock market.)
I think the whole combination of vendors sounds neat. I'll check it out sometime, but it IS quite a ways out of town. I see tourists as their only real customers,... and not sure if even THAT will support it. The owners need to make deals with the tourist companies so the busses will stop there daily.

Cool, live musicians. Also, the tiki bar has food like pulled pork sandwiches, snacks and smoothies. The lobster game where you can maybe catch your own lunch looked entertaining but tough.
But speaking from experiences in other locales, I imagine it's the gaming that will keep the place occupied. Seniors do love their gambling.
I see a sign out front that says "Shuttle". Is that a shuttle to/from Naples, or to/from the parking lot?

Why would you go all they way down there to just drink? You could go to the local 7-eleven/gas station/quickmart and by singles. By the way they still put it in a brown bag so you can have it for the drive home! If you want to go after wrong doings start there. If you want to have a good time take a drive. You won't be disappointed!
