Looking Back: The year: 1959. The setting: Naples’ Fifth Avenue South
The year: 1959. The setting: Naples’ Fifth Avenue South. The woman: A mystery. Paul Lindabury of Naples wonders whether readers will be able to identify the woman with a broom and dressed quite nicely just west of US. 41 and east of Eighth Street South. The cars and size of the buildings give away the era. Look hard and you can see the time and temperature clock that was the trademark of the pioneer Bank of Naples, center left, that now is a three-story mixed-use building — still anchored by a bank. Readers with local memorabilia or clues to the woman’s identity are encouraged to call the Perspective editor at 263-4773.

Wow, what a flood of memories after seeing this, like the corner drugstore just across from the B of N, the baseball field in the park behind the bank (where they used to have the 4th of July fireworks before moving to the pier), the little arcade of shops which included the barber shop where a classmate's dad worked ....oh how I could go on, and I thought there was nothing like Browse night, where stores were open at NIGHT. I grew up in Naples and was 8 years old in 1959.

Hmmm, 1959 huh? Looks like this was taken in front of Arnold's 5 & 10. Let's see now, starting at the corner of 41 & 5th Ave. there was Bill Reid's Sinclair Station, then B&W Hardware w/Walter Wolfe, then Arnolds 5 & 10 (before it became Alexander's Department Store).
Could the lady sweeping be a member of the Arnold Family?
p.s. At the time this picture was taken Alexander's, (Jesse, Lucy & Jerry), was located on the far side of the Bank of Naples with a parking lot between.
