COLLIER SHERIFF
Woman tried to sell ‘hot’ snakes at pet shop, deputies say
Collier County sheriff’s deputies arrested an employee of a local reptile company after they say she tried to sell three rare snakes at half price to a Golden Gate pet store.
Daisy Alonso, 34, entered Pets Plus, 5535 Golden Gate Parkway, around 5:50 p.m., approached the cash register and attempted to sell three rare baby snakes packaged in small containers, the Sheriff’s Office reported.
Employees told deputies that Alonso was offering the snakes — a rufescens sand boa worth $350, a sharp tail sand boa worth $250 and a speckled mex mex worth $250 — for half price, reports said.
Employee Barbara McDonald, 35, told deputies that she thought it was suspicious that Alonso brought the snakes in labeled containers, which she recognized as belonging to a local wholesale pet store.
Further investigation by deputies revealed that Alonso had stolen the snakes from Reptile Industries, 2271 Rock Road, where she is an employee, deputies said.
Employees of Reptile Industries told deputies that the three snakes had returned earlier Tuesday from a snake show out of state and that Alonso was in charge of completing the inventory on the snakes before they were placed back in their habitats, reports said. They noted Alonso was alone in the inventory room most of the day.
Alonso, 1747 Sunshine Blvd., was arrested and charged with grand theft and dealing in stolen property.
