Local architects, students compete to create sculptures made out of cans

Canned Art from Harry Chapin Food Bank
The art in the photo gallery is from past entries in the national Canstruction Competition for International Hunger Relief. Local organizers say their sculptures will not be as elaborate as these, but these are examples of the concept and what can be achieved.

Local architects, engineers, and even middle school students are teaming up at Halloween to enter the Canstruction design/build competition.
On Friday, they will create sculptures entirely out of canned food, vying for awards such as Best Use of Labels, Best Meal, Structural Ingenuity and Jurors’ Favorite. Judging will take place on Saturday and the public gets its first look on Sunday at the Imaginarium Hands-On Museum and Aquarium on Cranford Avenue in Fort Myers.
The event is sponsored by the Harry Chapin Food Bank, which is in Fort Myers and serves all Southwest Florida; the American Institute of Architects, Florida Southwest Chapter; and the Florida Planning & Zoning Association.
The local event is part of an international competition to benefit hunger relief organizations. Once the sculptures are displayed through Nov. 9, they are photographed and dismantled, and the canned food is donated to the Harry Chapin Food Bank.
In keeping with the theme, Imaginarium patrons get in free on Saturday in exchange for the donation of canned food — again for the benefit of the food bank.
