NAPLES Two teams and two individuals have chances at state golf championships starting today.
And the weather could have something to say about it.
The forecast for central Florida is for windy conditions today, and chilly temperatures on Wednesday.
“They’re saying 30 or 40 mph winds,’’ said Community School coach B.J. Ferriel, whose region champion Seahawks play in the Class 1A state tournament at The Club at Eaglebrooke in Lakeland.
“It’ll be a little taste of Scotland,’’ quipped Barron Collier athletic director Jason Mitterwager.
The Barron Collier girls, who play in the 2A state tournament at Ridgewood Lakes in nearby Davenport, have more than the elements to deal with.
Boys coach Vic Carder was tabbed by Mitterwager after Mitterwager and girls coach Shelley Hopper mutually agreed last week she would not coach the team.
“Vic Carder has just been phenomenal,’’ Mitterwager said of the coach who led the boys team to the state tournament a year ago, and within a playoff of a return trip. “He requires the kids to have fun, whether it’s drills in practice or whatever.’’
Gulf Coast freshman Emma Smyser, who won the Class 2A-Region 5 tournament, will be playing as an individual.
Estero’s Ryan Clase, who won the Class 1A-Region 6 tournament, will be the lone male representative at the state tournament at The Golf Club at Bridgewater in North Lakeland.
A few of the Seahawks — sisters Marcy and Kristen Koonce, and Olivia Lynch — have state tournament experience. They were on the team that was 15th in 2006.
And the fact that Charlotte Becker and Alexandria Ramirez have played in 18-hole tournaments before has Ferriel hopeful.
“Today, they were very relaxed,’’ Ferriel said. “I think that enough of them have played in tournaments that they understand the stress and the pressure.’’
The Seahawks had a good feeling after playing a practice round Monday.
“The girls really enjoyed playing the golf course, and I think feel that they can probably play it real well,’’ Ferriel said.
The Cougars are sending a young team — two juniors, two sophomores and freshman Stephanie Carlozzi.
“We’re a young team, but we’re achieving just like our boys,’’ Mitterwager said. “We don’t have a senior on the roster. They’re going to have fun, and they’re going to enjoy the experience, but we’re not up here to go through the motions. We’re up here to play well.’’
