The Community School girls golf team improved by eight strokes on Wednesday, and finished sixth in the Class 1A state tournament at The Club at Eaglebrooke in Lakeland. Gulf Coast freshman Emma Smyser tied for ninth at the 2A tournament.
Junior Marcy Koonce, who struggled to an 86 in Tuesday's first round, bounced back with a 75 to lead the Seahawks with a 161 total. Junior Charlotte Becker had a 79 to finish with a 163, and eighth-grader Alexandria Ramirez and freshman Olivia Lynch both finished up at 164. Senior Kristen Koonce had a 94 and was at 178.
The Seahawks had a 321 total for a 650 overall total, 12 strokes behind fifth-place Jacksonville Bolles. Plantation-American Heritage won with a 581 total, firing a 281 on Wednesday to win by 12 shots.
Canterbury's Michelle Shin finished second overall, shooting a 4-under 68. American Heritage's Lindy Duncan won the overall title with a 135 total, two shots better than Shin.
At the 2A girls tournament at Ridgewood Lakes in Davenport, Smyser shot a 1-over 73 and tied for ninth overall at 155. Her 73 tied for the lowest score of the day.
Barron Collier finished where it started the day, in 13th place out of 16 teams. Freshman Stephanie Carlozzi shot an 84 and tied for 21st at 166.
The Cougars improved by five shots, shooting a 386 for a 777 total.
Other scores for Barron were: Michelle Federman, a 95 for a two-day total of 189; Meagan Flodeen 104/213, Andrea Groch 103/210, and Elizabeth Conway 109/217.
Madison Pressel, the younger sister of LPGA Tour star Morgan Pressel, won the individual title by a stroke at 147. She had a 78 after a first-round 69. Alex Buelow of Stuart-Martin County was second.
At the 1A boys tournament at The Golf Club at Bridgewater in North Lakeland, Estero senior Ryan Clase jumped 19 spots with a final-round 73 for a 154 total. Clase tied for 24th.
