LAKELAND The Community School girls golf team met their goal of slashing their score from Tuesday to Wednesday at the Class 1A state golf finals in Lakeland. Unfortunately, so did a number of other teams, and the Seahawks hopes of a state title were dashed.
Community School shot a second-day 321, eight strokes better than its Tuesday score of 329. The Seahawks finished in sixth place out of the 16 teams at the tournament.
“We’re thrilled with the way we played today,” Community School coach B.J. Ferriel said. “If you can improve on your performance, that’s all you can ask for.”
The Seahawks can take solace in the fact that three of their top four players will be returning next season, meaning the foundation for another run at the state title has already been secured.
“When you look at it and you say, we came in sixth, and you think about the fact that there were only five teams in the state that were better than them, it’s pretty awesome,” Ferriel said. “And then to say, you beat 10 of the teams … you have to put in all in perspective.”
In the overall 1A individual standings, junior Marcy Koonce, who had a two round total of 161, was the top Community School finisher, finishing in a tie for 33rd place. Koonce shot a career-low 75 on Wednesday.
“I think the conditions were really tough on Tuesday and it just really helped to be able to see the course today,” said Koonce, who shaved 11 strokes off her score from Tuesday to Wednesday.
Junior Charlotte Becker (163) took 35th, eight grader Alexandria Ramirez (164) and freshman Olivia Lynch (164) finished tied for 36th, while senior Kristen Koonce (178) finished 52nd.
