Biden campaigns in Fort Myers

Democratic vice presidential nominee promised that he and Obama will reverse the country’s current course

Is Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware a good choice for Barack Obama's running mate?

See the results without voting ».

— Democratic vice presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Joe Biden stopped by Fort Myers on Wednesday to hold an economic roundtable at the Harborside Event Center.

The Delaware Democrat told about 500 invited guests that he and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s campaign platform will address the economic woes that have led to Lee County being No. 1 in mortgage foreclosures in the country. He took to the stage just after 11 a.m., spoke for more than an hour and then shook hands of attendees until nearly 1 p.m.

“As old or as young as you are in this room,” Biden asked those in the room, “can any of you remember a time when the middle class has been so apprehensive, so uncertain?”

Biden went on to tell supporters that he and Obama would ensure affordable health care for all Americans, make college more accessible, promote pursuing renewable energy sources to create some 5 million new U.S. jobs and cut taxes for the middle class.

“There’s no reason why South Florida can’t be the solar capital of the world,” Biden told the audience to applause. “There’s no reason why we can’t change our opportunities. This should be a win-win situation for us, but instead we’re not going to continue to pay companies in tax breaks if they take their jobs overseas, we’re going to pay them if they stay.”

Biden went on to hear from four local citizens who have all been negatively affected by the economy and then provided how the Democratic presidential campaign would solve those economic problems.

Alejandro Miyar, who’s with the Obama campaign, said many of those in the audience were invited because they volunteered to help on the campaign trail.

“These are people who have committed a lot of their time already and they deserve to be rewarded,” Miyar said. “Southwest Florida is an area that has been especially ravaged by the Bush economy. Sen. Obama and Sen. Biden’s message is something that will resonate with the middle class here.”

Among those in the audience were Anastasia Cholacu, 26, of Naples, who is studying business at Hodges University. She said Biden’s message hit home for her.

“I’m a full-time student and right now I’m fully dependent on my financial aid allowance,” Cholacu said. “Right now I’m looking for a job and no one is hiring, and now I’m concerned with how I’m going to pay my loans off.”

Also in the audience were Bonita Springs Mayor Ben Nelson and Bonita City Councilwoman Martha Simons. Before leaving the event, Nelson stopped to shake Biden’s hand and snap a photo with him.

Simons said she was pleased to hear Biden’s message.

“He spoke about tax cuts for 95 percent of the people in the United States, about green energy jobs, about helping with foreclosures, education,” Simons said.

“I was just really happy to hear how they were going to pay for it and what it is that they were going to do for the average working class, middle class family.”

You have to love Joe Biden, you may have some disagreements with him, but he really seems to be genuinely nice.

Biden is a great guy. I am sure the Republicans would have loved to have this guy on their side. But since he's a Democrat, all they can do is disparage him. But that's politics in America, people. I'm sure glad we Dems have him as our V.P. choice. Obama/Biden all the way!!!

#2 Posted by geecee827 on September 3, 2008 at 10:16 a.m. (Suggest removal)

No, I don't have to love Joe Biden. I have to love America.

NOBAMA!!!

#3 Posted by blueblood on September 3, 2008 at 10:20 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Oh, so anyone who supports Obama/Biden doesn't love America? I would strongly suggest that anyone who supports McCain/Palin is mentally challenged.

#4 Posted by geecee827 on September 3, 2008 at 10:39 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Maybe if Biden was on the Republican ticket, it would be different. But, we are voting for President not VP.

#5 Posted by blueblood on September 3, 2008 at 10:41 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I never implied that if you were in support of Obama you did not love America. I don't believe he is the right choice today. He is much too inexperienced for the job.

But again, that is my feeling. I can only hope people vote with their heads.

Why I don't hear anything on those right wing ultraconservatives radio talk shows like Hannity and Rush or Ingram about the ongoing investigation on Palin for abuse of power?????

#7 Posted by jagv05652 on September 3, 2008 at 10:57 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Agreed blueblood - I also hope people vote with their heads - for Obama/Biden, however. They are far superior in intelligence and prepared to rationally handle the problems this country is faced with domestically and internationally. This is no time for "on-the-job" training. And Obama has taught Constitutional Law for 10 years, so does have a pretty good idea of how government should operate. I have not one bit of trepidation in voting for him, particularly since he chose such a fine running mate as Joe Biden.

I have one question..... who is going to pay for all the programs these two presidential candidates are constantly promoting and how do they, at the same time, intend to reduce the current devastating budget deficit and balance the budget? Would someone please enlighten me?

It appears, as always, talk is cheap and reality non existent when it comes down to ensuring "the party" gains control of the public purse strings.

Please, anyone, share any detail on how either candidate will resolve the current budget deficit and crisis.... oh.... and I mean "fairly" so that all Americans derive benefit equally?

I, for one, believe McCain is unfit to lead and will only benefit the rich... on the other hand, I believe Obama will not find an entitlement program that he doesn't like and would fund. I'm tired of a tax policy that only benefits the wealthy and corporate elite. I'm equally tired of my tax dollars being used to develop programs that encourage people to not work or find a resolution to their own problems.

I have a 85 year old, almost blind, mother who has worked all her life; paid taxes and social security all her life. She is collecting less in her retirement social security benefit than a person I grew up with that, due to her abuse of drugs and resulting health issues, is collecting twice as much through her social security disability benefit while continuing her abuse of drugs and alcohol. Anyone see anything wrong with this picture?

How about "affirmative action" as the basis for employment. How many workers currently hold positions simply based on race and sex quotas regardless of whether they were the most qualified, or best, candidate for the position? How much do you think this policy is costing us in wasted time and effort and resulting tax dollars? Do you think we could reduce the size of this bureaucracy in terms of people and dollars through simply hiring the best for the job regardless of race, creed or color?

I would simply love to experience an election season that truly focus on real issues; not the overwhelming number of worthless ideological diversions we are currently witnessing.

#9 Posted by RunSilentRunDeep on September 3, 2008 at 11:13 a.m. (Suggest removal)

That is exactly the point. Obama has a pretty good idea of how government should operate. No experience, but a pretty good idea.

I know you did not mean to give me a opening. May the BEST MAN/WOMAN win.

#10 Posted by blueblood on September 3, 2008 at 11:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Oldtimer - Do you have to resort to moments of Biden misspeaking to belittle the guy? Have Bush and Cheney always used the most politically-correct language? But, that's in the past. Now we have McCain, not exactly the most articulate guy in the Senate. He misspeaks a lot of times too. See, it works both ways, the pendulum swings in both directions. If you want to keep flinging mud for stupid stuff like this, well then, we can fling it right back!

#11 Posted by geecee827 on September 3, 2008 at 11:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I think we all have one thing in common and that is the health of the USA. I admit, sometimes I get very scared of what could happen to this country. I hope the debates shed some light on who the best candidate is. I really don't think any of us know for sure.

But sling on...

#12 Posted by blueblood on September 3, 2008 at 11:27 a.m. (Suggest removal)

RunSilentRunDeep,

Your argument about whose going to pay fo these programs is a typical talking point. But it holds no water. Who is paying for the war in Iraq and Afghanistan? All of our grandchildren and great grandchildren. The programs that Obama and Biden talk about pale in comparison to what is being spend on an unclear war every day. Don't use this whose going to pay argument, as we can't pay for anything right now. At least Obama-Biden want to invest the money in families, not in wars.

It's not clear how Affirmative Action fits into this discussion. You seem angry more than anything else. Your points are typical of people who don't have a clue about Affirmative Action. Ask the thousands of military commanders who argued before the supreme court, how important it is to have a diverse military.

If you look at our insitutions of higher education, there are plenty of quaified people across all races for a variety of jobs in the workplace.

For America's future, Obama-Biden is clearly the better pick. If you want more of the same neglect and beat down the little man, then go with McCain-Palin.

Blueblood, it does not surprising that you want McCain-Palin. Most blue blood people do.

The abuse of power investigation should matter???or its ok??

#14 Posted by jagv05652 on September 3, 2008 at 11:46 a.m. (Suggest removal)

RunSilentRunDeep - what about Affirmative Action? If you are referring to Obama, he got his education by way of scholarships and student loans - he left the 'race' checkbox blank on his applications because he wanted to get through on his own merits - and he soared.

If you are speaking generally, then I can tell you that Obama wants to modify affirmative action (for education-based applications) to include poor whites. That would make education available to all people, not just those that can buy their way in either with money, or because Daddy has some influence.

As far as in the workplace, affirmative action has failed anyway. It does not work.

Finally - jag, yes it DOES matter, and it's NOT OK (but I guess you'll get a different answer depending on who you ask!)

olstimer...here are just a few of McCain's misspeaks...want to go one for one??

We continue to be concerned about Iranian taking Al Qaeda into Iran, training them and sending them back,’’ Mr. McCain said at the news conference. Asked about that statement, Mr. McCain said: “Well, it’s common knowledge and has been reported in the media that Al Qaeda is going back into Iran and receiving training and are coming back into Iraq from Iran. That’s well known. And it’s unfortunate.”

It was not until he got a whispered correction from Senator Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut, who was traveling with Mr. McCain on the trip, which is a Congressional delegation, that Mr. McCain corrected himself.

“I’m sorry, the Iranians are training extremists, not Al Qaeda,” he said

McCain misspeaks on Constitution; Campaign Covers it Updailykos.com — "There is a very clear standard in the Constitution requiring not only just compensation in the use of eminent domain, but also that private property may NOT be taken for "public use."

No, actually, McCain is the one who makes himself look like a fool time and time again. His kneejerk responses to questions (with an emphasis on the "jerk") is what makes him look so ridiculous most of the time. He doesn't bother to think before he opens his mouth and gives the response he just knows the audience wants - "life begins at conception". And how does he know this for a fact? Is he a physician, a philosopher; God maybe? or "I'll follow Bin Laden to the Gates of Hell! Why doesn't he just do as Obama suggested and follow him to the caves in Afghanistan instead of fighting in Iraq where we know Bin Laden isn't there!!

Maybe Biden plagarized his speech about the Indians, too!

"Though Biden had correctly credited the original author in all speeches but one, the one where he failed to make mention of the originator was caught on video.

Within days, it was also discovered that, while a first year law student at Syracuse Law School, Biden had plagiarized a law review article in a class paper he wrote.

Though the then-dean of the law school, as well as Biden's former professor, played down the incident of plagiarism, they did find that Biden drew "chunks of heavy legal prose directly from" the article in question.

Biden said the act was inadvertent due to his not knowing the proper rules of citation, and

Biden was permitted to retake the course after receiving a grade of F, which was subsequently dropped from his record.

Further, when questioned by a New Hampshire resident about his grades in law school Biden had claimed falsely to have graduated in the "top half" of his class, (when he actually graduated 76th in a class of 85) that he had attended on a full scholarship, and had received three degrees."

kneejerk, having a niece with cerebral palsy, I am also disgusted. You don't slap ANY child in front of a camera at any opportunity to get sympathy votes. For over thirty years, my sister has raised my niece, who cannot walk, talk or feed herself. She has had countless surgeries. I have seen how nasty people can be (people - please raise your kids better - teach thm that laughing or ridiculing a disabled child HURTS). People tried to convince my sister that she should be in a home where she can get proper care. My sister devoted her whole life to her daughter (as a single parent at that, and has never married or dated because she is dedicated to the needs of her daughter). My sister has to work to support her, so she went and applied for a job at a hospital, which came with the satisfaction of KNOWING how to take care of her daughter, and helping others at the same time. If my sister decided to parade my niece around in front of the media like some tool or stage prop, I would really have something to say to her. NOBODY WOULD DO THAT TO THEIR CHILD IF THEY REALLY HAD THEIR CHILD'S INTEREST AT HEART!!! It is sick. The child is supposed to be loved, not used for political motives.

Whether you are democrat or republican, you can't dispute the fact that Palin is a polotician of the people. Has there ever been a Democrat that got 80 % of their states vote. She got 80% of her states vote and she gave a good speech and behold you have made your decision.

You’re kidding right?

Alaska has roughly 640,000 people give or take.
Assuming everyone voted, Palin got about 512,000.

New York State has roughly 8,100,000 people give or take. Hillary Clinton won 57% of those votes. (Assuming everyone voted) That' about 4,617,000 give or take.

You actually think this woman can be the first female president?

I feel compelled to let you in on a little secret...
When the McCain/Palin ticket loses in November, that's the end for Mrs. Palin and definitely McCain.

Good Luck with that!

It's funny how Republicans are just waiting to bash anyone who does not agree with them. Sorry, you're no more an American than the Queen of England. If you are an American, why do you find it necessary to spew such filth about ANYONE that doesn't agree with you? As an American, you have the right to disagree, but some of these posts are pitiful.

That's what is wrong with many of the right-wing talk show blowhards. Disagree with them and they'll stab you in a heartbeat. Why not honor my right to disagree? Why am I less of an American because I believe that Barack Obama will do a better job in leading this country than McCain?

As for Palin, I can't wait for people to start asking questions about her husband's (and her) support in a group that seeks to annex the state of Alaska. Some American, huh? Oh, you didn't know that? Maybe you should turn (ins)Hannity off and start doing your own research.

GatorHater07,

Yes you can make different sets of rules for different children.

My 13 year old has a different set of rules from my 5 year old.

Bristol is 17 years old and pregnant. I think as a woman of power the message Palin is sending is all-wrong for teenagers in the world today. I don't want my teenage daughter justifying getting pregnant by looking at this woman and her choices as a parent. Whether she knows it or not she IS pro-choice. She chooses to raise her teenage daughter's child. She should have had her daughter at Planned Parenthood somewhere getting on birth control. That would have been my choice. We all have these choices to make.

At any rate,
It's just plain common sense.
Good people don't exploit their sick baby. It's really sad and desperate.

BTW,
Palin get over 4 million votes in one state...you're diluted.

Gator - please quote where you've heard ANYBODY from Obama's campaign criticize the teenager.

And let me tell you something else while I'm here - in reference to your sentence which reads, "who has ever made the decision not to abort a fetus with Downs' Syndrome" - as Democrats, and as parents, WE NEVER EVEN TOOK THE DOWN SYNDROME TEST for ANY of our children. WHY? BECAUSE IT DID NOT MATTER. It would NOT HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE. It is not a PARTY descision, it is a HUMAN descision. If all of my children had any syndrome of any type, and actually one does have some minor special needs, are you trying to say that because of the descision that MY family made, I should be a Republican? I am grateful that I had the option to choose, but because I PERSONALLY CHOSE LIFE, does not mean I can DICTATE the CHOICE of another WOMAN. If the Republican's get in, A WOMAN'S CHOICE is out of the window, and unless you are PERSONALLY prepared, both financially and emotionally, to take on ALL of the unwanted children born out of incest, rape, or to mother's who die because of their pregnancy, or even a baby with deformaties severe enough that they could not survive after birth, then we had BETTER leave choice as an option.

We do need to put LIMITS on it, for example, banning late-term or partial-birth termination, which thankfully, Obama is open to doing. But you can't realistically end the right of a woman to choose. Google some news from Ireland - see what young girls there will do to find a solution to the ban. Unless you want your own daughter's to experiment with overdoses and wire coathangers, then we BETTER leave choice as an option. Are you SERIOUSLY trying to tell ME that a Republican never had an abortion? ARE YOU SERIOUS?????

Yes, I'm proud to be a DEMOCRAT.

Gator,
It's like trying to fit a camel through the eye of a needle.

She would not be able to hold a candle to Hillary Clinton (and I really dislike Hillary)

After Palin's finished having baby showers and going to hockey games and pulling her daughters out of corners making-out with boys, and picking her hubby up from the bar so he doesn't drive home drunk and going to birthday parties and picking the kids up from school and caring for her sick baby etc.... How does she have time to run a country (that's in turmoil) when McCain croaks?

All those things I mentioned earlier are things that good moms do and they still have time for their husbands and keep a nine to five.

Running a country is a 24hour job and (aside from being a parent) it's one of the hardest jobs. She is expecting to be one croak away from this position.

How arrogant of this woman to think we will allow her to potentially hold the fate of our children in one hand and a diaper in the other.
You've got to be completely out of your minds! She's got too much on her plate and everyone will suffer including her family.

THIS NEWSPAPER IS A JOKE...As if we didn't already know it, but they made it pretty obvious today.
Anyone notice how Palin (who fired back often and hard last night in her speech) is being 'convienently' left out of the paper COMPLETELY today??? Effing ridiculus. It's the lead story on every network news station and on the front page of every major newspaper (unless a bigger local story is present), but here, in one of the Reddest counties in the country, the story of her speech is left out entirely...i say we boycott this effing rag and be done w/them!

Gator - I haven't read anywhere that somebody thinks she should have aborted a Down's baby. I have heard plenty of criticism about her not willing to make sacrifices for the baby. Personally, I work around the needs of my children, my children don't work around my own needs, so yes, it upsets me too that she does that. If having a Down's baby is not something you would make sacrifices for, then what is? It does make her appear cold and callous to be popping out babies when you don't have time to bond with the child. The daughter is caught up in a mess because of the mother's choices, and it's just plain wrong for anybody, Dem, Rep or Independent to take out the way they feel about the mother, and direct it at the teenager. But after watching the Bill O'Reilly's and that crowd going so hard on Jamie Lynn Spears being 17 and pregnant, and seeing a whole lot of hypocrisy surrounding that issue (which nobody actually really cares about anyway), it stirs up emotion and things do get said in the heat of the moment. We have all done it, and I can look at my pwn marriage to see how things can get said quickly that were never meant, and i'm sure any other truthful person can say the same. This type of issue draws an emotional debate - this is LIFE we are talking about, not toys or Barbie dolls. We are human.

Many people don't understand that there will be upcoming seats in the Supreme Court which the NEXT President will have to fill. Now, depending on the choice of the NEXT President, will be the deciding factor on Roe vs Wade being overturned or not. It hangs on ONE vote. This is a huge descision for the next President to make. They have to put a new judge in. If McCain gets elected, it is obvious from his VP choice that he won't select a pro-choice judge. It is likely that he will nominate a pro-life Judge who will be the deciding factor when the issue comes in front of them again. And we will have to live with that descision for the NEXT generation. A total abortion ban will make procedures inhumane and illegal. Procedures will still be done, but in an inhumane and unsafe manner, and by crooks looking to make a quick buck out of teenaged girls. What will this mean for our daughter's if God forbid, they are in dire need of making that descision?

Anyway, not trying to make any attacks, justify anything, or push my opinion on you (at least not in this particular post!), just trying to shed light on why things are so emotionally heated.

NOT2MINCHIN... I just don't understand either - why go ahead with a test that COULD cause harm to the unborn baby if the result of the test make no difference! I don't get it.

Gator,
Wow you really don't get it do you?

It's fine to be a career mother...read the entire comment. Since the Republicans have been in office, most families have no choice.

I don't want a half devoted career mom as the next vice president/president of the country that I live in.
Why do you think Hillary didn't win. Even if she is completely devoted to the job... that would mean she is not completely devoted to her family. What kind of family values would she be promoting? You wouldn't want her to come off as a hypocrite would you?

I don't know about you, but my family is everything and if there's trouble in paradise, work gets put on the back burner. Palin doesn't even have the job yet and she's already dealing with huge paradise problems. What kind of President could she possibly be? About as good as Bush Jr. maybe?

Face it man...you know Palin can't do the job. You secretly cringed when you heard McCain's announcemnet of the Alaskan Governor to be his running mate.

It's so nice to see that the Republicans are taking the high-ground and keeping family and parenting issues out of the campaign. And, it's such a shame that the Democrats apparently aren't smart enough to do the same.

Because there is a substantial case to be made that Barack & Michelle Obama are equally "bad parents", by the Democrats' own definitions.

Who was watching after their children while he was out "organizing" neighborhoods in Chicago, or while she was out working for the hospital?

Who is watching after their children while they chase their tales around the country on the campaign trail?

Haven't they abandoned their children to their relatives so they don't have to be bothered with them while stumping?

Will they move the same relatives into the White House to look after them then, too, if daddy gets elected President and if mommy runs around playing First Lady?

If they cared for them at all, Michelle would quit campaigning with hubby and go stay with the kids like a good wife should, right?

That argument works both ways, Democrats. Keep it up and you'll wind up alienating a lot of potential "undecided" voters, particularly those who fall into the category of "career parents" and keep hearing themselves getting called "bad" for having both a career and a family.

Don't be a hater gator,

McCain has cancer, he's 72,73,uh I lost count. I'll have my people get back to your people on the numbers. LOL

It's not my fault that this old guy is running for president, it is what it is.

You are part of that regretful team that voted George W. Bush into office not once but twice.

News flash,
Your credibility and judgment wouldn't convince a homeless man to move into a tax-free mansion.

Not 2 mention,
For you to say,
"Then I guess it's a good thing she's only running for Vice President, isn't it?"

It shows your lack of confidence in your own party.

Only running for vice president?

That's the problem with the right-wingers. You justify by trying to curtail things into your own little window of rationality.

Okay let's put aside the fact that he has nearly surpassed that average human being life expectancy in this country.
What happens if McCain dies in a car wreck? I wonder who is next in line?

An old proverb derivative states.

"Fail to plan...plan to fail."

This team is not what this country needs and you know it.
It might have been an okay team in 2000, before Bush screwed the country up, but know we know better.

I assure you we will not allow this to happen again.
Obama 08!!

You bet the whole world is watching. And I really hope that there will be a change in the right direction or the word American won't mean a darn thing to anyone anymore.

The US dollar is still low compared to the Euro, there's no jobs, the economy is in the toilet, crime rates are higher, everyone is in debt, foreclosures everywhere, theres a need for immigration reforms, education funding is ridiculous, should I keep going?

Be realistic, we need someone that we'll take charge and switch things around so when tomorrow comes your kids will be able to pay off those college loans and will be able to say "I made it. I've achieved MY american dream".

NOT2 - In addition to av. life expectancy, here's 'old white-haired dude's' paternal history:

Admiral John S. McCain Jr. died of a heart attack at age 70 in 1981. So did Senator McCain's grandfather Admiral John S. McCain Sr. at age 63.

Only an uneducated person could support a person with these radical ideas.

Palin recently said that the war in Iraq is "God's task." She's even admitted she hasn't thought about the war much—just last year she was quoted saying, "I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq." 1, 2
Palin has actively sought the support of the fringe Alaska Independence Party. Six months ago, Palin told members of the group—who advocate for a vote on secession from the union—to "keep up the good work" and "wished the party luck on what she called its 'inspiring convention.'" 3
Palin wants to teach creationism in public schools. She hasn't made clear whether she thinks evolution is a fact.4
Palin doesn't believe that humans contribute to global warming. Speaking about climate change, she said, "I'm not one though who would attribute it to being manmade." 5
Palin has close ties to Big Oil. Her inauguration was even sponsored by BP. 6
Palin is extremely anti-choice. She doesn't even support abortion in the case of rape or incest. 7
Palin opposes comprehensive sex-ed in public schools. She's said she will only support abstinence-only approaches. 8
As mayor, Palin tried to ban books from the library. Palin asked the library how she might go about banning books because some had inappropriate language in them—shocking the librarian, Mary Ellen Baker. According to Time, "news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire Baker for not giving "full support" to the mayor." 9
She DID support the Bridge to Nowhere (before she opposed it). Palin claimed that she said "thanks, but no thanks" to the infamous Bridge to Nowhere. But in 2006, Palin supported the project repeatedly, saying that Alaska should take advantage of earmarks "while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist." 10
The plain fact of the matter is that Sarah Palin did a bang-up job delivering a Karl Rove-style political attack speech last night. That makes her a skilled politician but it doesn't make her views any more palatable for voters. Americans don't really want another far-right, anti-science ideologue in the White House.
