BONITA SPRINGS The Bonita Springs City Council unanimously approved Wednesday evening a new special events permit ordinance that was at one point intended to prevent loud and disruptive parties coming from neighbors’ homes.
The final, approved version of the ordinance removed any special event requirements for parties of 49 people to 79 people held in residences with amplified sound.
There was much discussion over whether to remove the residential and small event rules intended for the ordinance.
“I don’t think that we’re going to get anywhere, to tell you the truth, to have people get private permits to have parties,” Mayor Ben Nelson said during discussion.
Councilman Janet Martin said the city needs to do something to control large, private nuisance parties.
“Where I live there are many complaints,” Martin said, adding that there is a difference between a Christmas party and a violation of someone’s peace and quiet two blocks away. “It’s so hard to find that happy medium.”
Councilwoman Martha Simons was sure she would hear about the issue again.
“I predict that it will be back,” she said.
In other action at its Wednesday meeting, the council unanimously approved two special events.
The council approved a special event permit and city sponsorship for the 2008 YMCA Fall Family Festival, which will be held Nov. 15 at the YMCA on Kent Road, which is east of Interstate 75 between East Terry Street and Bonita Beach Road.
The council also approved a special event permit and city sponsorship for five free, public concerts of the Bonita Springs Concert Band on Nov. 23, Jan. 18, Feb. 8, March 1, and April 12 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Riverside Park on Old 41 Road.
The YMCA expects some 3,000 people to attend the festival, which will give families an opportunity to experience several family oriented demonstrations, including karate, science experiments, a performance by the Estero High School Varsity Cheerleading Squad, bands, a magic act and several other entertainment activities. There will also be bingo, arts and crafts and various sports activities.
The festival is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Great prediction Martha,,,,,lol,,,,, if im not mistaken, Bonita already Has a noise ordinance in place,,, hmmmmmmm ,i have an idea,, why not use That as a means to "excercise your control over your subjects" ?, let the whiners and complainers call the Sheriffs Dept. ,,lodge a formal complaint, just like everyone else, and let the cops do their jobs,,,on this subject, every time they have a soccer game at the " Y ",,i can hear the whole game at my house,,,and i have Yet to call and complain,,and thers not permits needed for them,is there? theres just to many ,neighborhood commandos, that hate the idea of someone having a good time, and they either didnt want to go,or werent invited,,,we have More than to many ,,Ordinances,,as it is, so simply let the complainers, make the complaints,,,OR hmmmm how about trying to get along with your neighbors??,,,,,

You hit the nail on the head Bullbat, neighborhood commandos upset that they weren't invited. It all boils down to being a good neighbor.

beetlejuice #2,,,,, hi beetle,,,isnt a large group of people, bright lights, and noise pullulation ,having food and drinks served/brought in,,the same things wether its a party or game?,,,ive played football at BBQ/s /parties that ive been to,so its all the same,if looked at in real life,,,right?,,,,, as for the neighborhood/condo commandoes , are parties criminal activates, riots, etc?,,,, even the Bill of Rights says we can have peaceful assemblies,,,so if the party goers arent killing each other or the "commandoes",how much more peaceful can a party be?,,ive had whole weekend parties at my place, and all the neighbors are invited, shoot ive even told a few cops They were invited as soon as they were off duty,:-),,,
Thanks fishguts,,,its a lot easier to be a good neighbor than otherwise,,,, lol,,, to me Anyone that hides in their homes,or behind bushes and calls the cops, ANONOMOUSLY,about a Party is a real sicko,,,and needs to just go to the party say HI, and have a good time,,,,,:-),,,,,,,,
