We’ll focus on communication this week. It’s a big word today, plus it’s our first name here in the Communication & Information Office. For the school district, there’s a communication piece attached to practically everything that goes on. We try our best to communicate with you, and this column, along with the programming offered on The Education Channel, cable 20, are among the best tools found in our toolbox.
Here are a couple of examples of ways we communicate. When bad weather’s heading our way, there are several ways we get word to you when we need to close our schools. We, of course, let the media know, but there are three sources to turn to for info coming directly from the school district offices:
Our Emergency Information Hotline is a tool you control. You may call whenever you’d like to get updates about whether schools are open or closed. There’s a new number to call this year, and in case you need to leave the area, the call is toll-free from anywhere in the continental United States. The brand-new number is 888-994-NEWS (6397.) We wanted to give you a number that’s easy to remember, but it’s still a good idea to write it down anyway, so you’ll have it when you need it. The message there is given in English, Spanish and Creole.
The home page of the district Web site will always contain prominently displayed official information about school closings or the reopening of school. The district’s Web address is www.collier.k12.fl.us. If you have Internet access, this is a great way to go.
The Education Channel, cable 20, is another source for official district-originated school closing news and information. If you have cable, depend on the channel to keep yourself well-informed.
Superintendent Dennis L. Thompson invites you to communicate with him on a regular basis.
The Education Channel gives you a couple of good ways to do that. First there’s Open Mic, your chance to call in and speak directly with Dr. Thompson. The next live edition will be broadcast Monday. Call 377-1020, from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. First names only are used. Another easy way to reach the superintendent is through the “eConnection” TV show. Supt. Thompson and a school board member will answer your e-mail questions. This is a good time to send your question to eConnection@collier.k12.fl.us
