Sept. 11, 2008 will mark the seventh anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Flight 93 in Pennsylvania.
Counting firefighters, police, tower workers and passengers on the doomed airliners, the death toll from the attacks was more than 3,000 people.
To commemorate those lives lost and recognize Patriot’s Day, local high schools and emergency service agencies will host several services to honor those who died in the attacks and those who served their country.
• The first of several services will be held at 7:45 tonight at Barron Collier High School, as the band presents is 11th Annual Veterans Appreciation halftime show, “In Remembrance of 9/11,” in Cougar Stadium.
The band invites all military veterans, active-duty personnel and emergency service personnel as honored guests. Those in uniform or military wear will be provided VIP seating and invited to appear during the band’s performance.
Spectators will receive small American flags to wave with the patriotic music, which will include official service marches of the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force and Marines, as well as “God Bless America,” “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and marches by John Philip Sousa. Veterans in the audience will be asked to stand when their particular service march is played.
The tribute will include “McClintock’s Own” bagpipes, drums and Highland Dancers and the BCHS band, playing the National Anthem.
Veterans are asked to arrive at Barron Collier stadium at 7:45 p.m. where band boosters will greet them at the South entrance.

Under the direction of GGHS Band Director Steve DeLadurantey, band members will play “taps,” in memory of those who lost their lives to the Sept. 11 attacks. The school’s JROTC color guard will present the Colors, under the direction of Sgt. George Harvey.
Members of the Golden Gate Fire & Rescue District, the Golden Gate Sheriff’s Substation, and Emergency Medical Service will attend and take part in the service.
A bell ceremony will be conducted by GGFD Battalion Cmdr. Matthew Zaleznik in memory of firefighters who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. A memorial wreath will be presented in memory of all lives lost that day.
