Local tennis: Fall season club tennis looming

— Another fall season of club-oriented tennis league competition looms just beyond the baseline.

Sponsored by the Collier County Community Tennis Association, the CTA LEAGUE Fall 2008 league is an interclub adult tennis league with doubles play at all levels. Leagues for the fall are the Day League, Mixed Doubles League and Night League, all beginning the third week in October and continuing through mid-December.

An informational and new captains meeting is set for 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at Longshore Lake Tennis Center.

Participants sign up as a team. Registration will take place Sept. 29 through Oct. 4.

Meanwhile, the USPTA BONITA Fall 2008 Adult Day League will start in October. The adult interclub league has men’s and women’s doubles teams competing at all levels. Clubs from the North Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero and San Carlos areas are encouraged to participate.

An informational and new captains meeting is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 29, at Bonita Bay Country Club Tennis Center.

Participants sign up as a team. Registration of teams runs Sept. 29 through Oct. 4 and league play will be Oct. 13 through Dec. 12.

Nikki Kallenberg of Naples won the Regional Summer Smash national girls 12s event held in Delray Beach this past weekend.

Kallenberg survived five rounds to get to the final, where she upended top-seeded Julia O’Loughlin of Boca Raton, 3-6, 6-0, 10-7. The 10-point tie-break was played in lieu of a third set.

The Arthur Allen Tennis Center at Cambier Park will be the site of the Tropical Junior Super Series tournament this weekend. This USTA-sanctioned event will have boys and girls from all over the state competing in singles and doubles in 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s and 18s.

The Collier County Women’s Tennis Association is getting organized for the fall and has set Oct. 18 as the date of its annual meeting and luncheon.

The group always welcomes new members, new players and new board members.

The Col-Lee Tennis League is in the process of organizing for the fall 2008 season. Play will begin Nov. 3 and continue through the week of Dec. 15.

All team captains and club representatives from last winter’s season will be receiving a sign-up package through the mail by the end of this month. A fun event for youngsters is coming up at Pelican Marsh. The facility will host a free “Tennis Carnival for Kids” on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. There will be games, contests, prizes and refreshments for those age 5 through 14. All children must register in advance by calling the tennis pro shop at 514-3200.

A new YMCA junior league team tennis format gives players an opportunity to compete in a fun, relaxed atmosphere every weekend. Players will be matched according to skill level and play a mixture of singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Registrations are now being accepted at the YMCA pro shop in Naples at 597-8431.

The next event in the USPTA/JusTennis Junior Tennis Series is a singles tournament, to be played at the East Naples Community Park on Saturday, Sept. 20. The registration deadline for the Sept. 20 tournament is Thursday, Sept. 18. Contact Collier County Parks tennis pro Spike Gonzales at 248-0894.

The Arthur Allen Tennis Center at Cambier Park has started its after-school tennis program.

Pee-Wee classes for ages 4-6 run from 3:15 to 4 p.m. Futures classes for ages 6-8 run from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. Tournament classes for ages 7-16 run from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Classes are available Monday through Thursday for seven more weeks. Call 213-3060.

At the Academia Casal-Sanchez at the Naples Tennis Club and Resort, the Junior After School Advanced Program for boys and girls ages 10 has sessions Monday through Friday from 4 to 6 p.m.

The Kids Zone Program for boys and girls ages 4-10 is going as well. These sessions are Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The Preeg-Doherty Fall Junior Tennis Academy at The Dunes in North Naples runs Tuesday through Friday from 4:15 to 6:15 p.m. It is geared for young players of all ages and levels of play, but the academy’s primary focus is for the tournament player.

Weekends include USTA tournaments as wells as private lessons and “free-play” sessions. The cost of the Academy is $40 per day or $140 per week. Call John or Lisa Preeg at 593-9736.

Frank Carleton, USPTA Tennis Director at Tarpon Cove Yacht and Racquet Club, will instruct a series of preseason tennis camps. The focus will be on doubles in the intensive three-day, three-hour program emphasizing high speed in play drills, doubles formations and strategies and match play.

At the Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club Tennis Center, mixed doubles round-robins are Fridays, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The level is for intermediate and higher. Pro Chris Eddy urges players to call the tennis pro shop at 435-4351 to reserve a space.

In addition, weekly adult drill clinics for varying levels are being held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings now through September. Phone 435-4351

The Heritage Bay Country Club, under the direction of Tony Martin, will conduct “Ladies Summer Boot Camp” sessions during this month. Registrations are being accepted for both individuals and teams for daytime and evening sessions.

The Boot Camp Level 1 will be offered Sept. 23-25 while the Boot Camp Level 2 will be offered Sept. 8-10 and Sept. 29 through Oct. 1.

The Imperial Racquet Club in North Naples has several open-to-the-public events going.

There are men’s round-robins at 9 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. All levels may participate.

Women’s round-robins take place at 9 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, again, for all levels.

Mixed doubles round-robins are at 8 a.m. Saturday for all levels.

The Imperial Racquet Club also offers a junior camp from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. All levels are welcome.

    Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
