The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has scheduled two public workshops to receive comments regarding proposed changes to freshwater turtle harvest rules.
The workshops are in response to concerns over increasing demand for Florida turtles amid tighter harvest restrictions in other states. Proposed rules would restrict individuals to a five turtle per day bag limit, except for species that already have more-restrictive limits.
The FWC encourages interested persons to participate in the workshops, which will take place next Thursday from 1:30-4:30 p.m., at the Okeechobee County Civic Center in Okeechobee, and 9 a.m. on Sept. 12 at the FWC’s South Region office, 3900 Drane Field Road in Lakeland.

Before getting a permit to hunt this season, all Florida hunters born on or after June 1, 1975, must pass the free hunter safety course through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
The FWC will host the field day portion of this course on Sept. 13 in Glades County. Participants must have completed the hunter safety online course and must have the printout of the final report from that course.
During the field day portion of the hunter safety course, participants will spend half the day in the classroom and half in the field. They will learn about current laws, safe gun handling and ethics, before taking the final test. The safety course also includes live-firing instruction on a shooting range.
The free safety course will be held at the Glades County Sheriff’s Office shooting range on Gun Club Road in Moore Haven from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Reservations are required and can be made online at MyFWC.com/huntered or by calling 561-625-5122. Parents or legal guardians must accompany children under 16 to all the classes. Children under 18 years of age must have a parental release form signed by a parent or legal guardian to participate in the live-fire exercises.
