Wait until the wind blows

A coconut to Southwest Floridians who are tuning out the weather.

They are tired of hearing about all these tropical storms and hurricanes lining up to come and get us.

So they decide to ignore it.

That’s real smart.

This is when we have to pay attention more than ever.

Cheaper by the barrel

A sand dollar to Bonita Springs City Council member Janet Martin for getting out there and promoting rain barrels at homes to store rainwater for use instead of expensive tap water for landscaping and other everyday purposes.

Yes, they do have screened lids to keep away mosquito breeding and, yes, they can be dressed up so they don’t look like rain barrels.

That is the kind of grass-roots citizen involvement that Martin promised to drum up if elected in January, and she is delivering.

Local faces, national voices

A starfish apiece for Mary Carillo and Peter Thomas, both of Naples, for their latest national media work.

Carillo, famous as a tennis player and analyst, distinguished herself with her work for NBC at the Olympics.

Thomas, the voice of “Forensic Files” and more national brands and documentaries than you could shake a stick at, narrates ESPN’s ad campaign for “Monday Night Football.”

Big ads, little clarity

A sand spur to those big ads for future development in Collier County that leave readers without law degrees wondering what’s going on.

The ones with little maps for the Collier County Planning Commission agendas are actually pretty good. It’s the bigger ones, usually headlined “Neighborhood Information Meeting,” for previews of what’s coming your way, that tend to confound more than inform.

It was only $23,000

Coconuts to attorneys who suggested that a judge allow an office manager who stole nearly $23,000 from a doctor’s office to avoid having a conviction on her record.

It took a personal court appearance and plea by the victim, Dr. Cindy Strohmeyer, to stand up for common sense. She asked without the defendant’s embezzlement on her record, how would a future employer know?

The judge agreed, adjudicating her guilty after making a no-contest plea and restitution, and sentencing her to probation.

Prosecutors need to put themselves in the shoes of victims more often. Thanks to Strohmeyer for helping them.

Animals’ best friends

A starfish extraordinaire to Lee County Animal Services staff members, volunteers and others.

They have trudged in hip boots into the murky, toxic flood waters at the Manna Christian trailer park and elsewhere in Bonita Springs to rescue pets left behind by their owners.

Ahead of the trends

A sand dollar for the accomplishments of a Bonita Springs woman who has passed away.

Patricia L. Griffith, 72, is the one we have to thank for fundamental do-it-yourself real-estate and legal transactions.

She was a pioneer — long before forthepeople.com or anything dot-com for that matter.

No Rocco? No way!

A coconut to the captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup team.

Rocco Mediate of Naples, who came that close to beating Tiger Woods in the U.S. Open golf tournament, was left off.

Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
