Prep football: St. John Neumann hopes to continue streak against Westminster Christian
MIAMI WESTMINSTER CHRISTIAN at ST. JOHN NEUMANN, 7 p.m.
• Key players: Neumann — QB Anthony DeMeo, TB Will Affleck, PK Jack Griffin, LB Austin Nelz.
• What to watch for: Neumann has had Westminster’s number the last two years, and while teh Celtics lost a number of talented seniors, the makings are there for Neumann to run its win streak against the Warriors to three straight. Westminster will face Neumann’s big offensive line and will likely be overmatched in the trenches. The Celtics also have versatility with the running of tailback Will Affleck and passing of Anthony DeMeo. Neumann needs to protect the ball better than it did in last Friday’s kickoff classic loss to Golden Gate.

NAPLES It’s become a bit of tradition — a ritual the members of the St. John Neumann Celtics football team have enjoyed over the last couple of years more than the Warriors of Miami-Westminster Christian School.
When they tangle at Neumann at 7 tonight, it will mark the third straight year Neumann and Westminster will have opened the regular season against one another.
Steve Howey’s Celtics have triumphed in both prior clashes against Steve Johnson’s Warriors, but it was close in 2007, when Neumann posted a 26-21 victory and needed some late-game defensive heroics.
While Neumann went 8-1 during the regular season last year, Westminster mustered only two victories in 10 games a year ago.
In the short series between the two schools, Neumann also prevailed in 2006, winning 33-18.
If there was one thing about the Celtics that impressed Golden Gate High’s Titans in last Friday’s preseason kickoff classic, it was the size of the Celtics’ offensive line. The Titans won it 28-14, taking advantage of a rash of costly Neumann turnovers.
The big guys up front for the Celtics include 6-foot-5, 225-pound sophomore Josh Hardy and 306-pound senior Nahum St. Fort. Troy Davidson, a 225-pound freshman center, is flanked by guards Jordan Wiman (185) and Mike Davis (195).
While Neumann’s Bobby Davis was a threat to both pass and run a year ago (he graduated last spring), Howey says he sees the Neumann’s passing game as having the potential to be even stronger under DeMeo’s passing this season.
For independent-classified Westminter Christian, tonight’s appearance at Class 1A St. John Neumann is one of two trips to Collier County this season. Westminster will play at Class 3A Lely on Oct. 3.
