NAPLES Collier County officials said today that based on current projections, residents should continue close monitoring of Hurricane Ike.
A statement was issued by Collier County Emergency Management based on the afternoon forecasts from the National Hurricane Center.
“At this point there are no evacuations or closures in place for Collier County,’’ the statement said. “The Collier County Emergency Operations Center is monitoring Hurricane Ike around the clock and will advise the public of any changes as soon as they become necessary.”
Current predicted storm tracks could spare Collier County of hurricane conditions, emergency officials said, but tropical storm conditions could be seen in Collier County on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“It is important for residents to monitor storm updates regularly due to the changing nature of the predicted course of the storm. It is still very possible that Hurricane Ike could strike Collier County and require evacuations and closures,’’ the statement said.
Anyone needing to register with the county’s Special Needs Program for sheltering may call (239) 252-8000 between 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, they said.
Otherwise, emergency managers urged residents to continue their preparations and if they live in an evacuation zone, to review their evacuation plans.
Collier County commissioners are to hold a special meeting to discuss Hurricane Ike on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the boardroom on the third floor of the administration building at the Collier County Government Center, 3301 U.S. 41 East, East Naples.
Residents of the unincorporated areas of Collier County, Marco Island, and Everglades City with piles of Tropical Storm Fay-related debris which remains to be collected are asked to call (239) 252-2380 and report the location of the debris pile no later than Sunday.

Bummer, The Collier County Emergency Operations Center once again doesn't get to use all their new toys. Well let's hope that they never ever have to use them.

Mother Nature just took another sip of her Martini chuckled a bit, and said "I think I'll turn Ike a little bit South right now and hit Havana dead on, then I'll zig and zag some more to keep those weather dudes guessing some more. (snicker, chuckle)
