Letter of the Day: ‘Out of the Darkness’
Editor, Daily News:
Since National Suicide Prevention Week is Sept. 7-13, Project HELP would like to use this time to encourage the public to learn more about this subject.
Research shows that more than 90 percent of people who die by suicide have an underlying, although not always diagnosed, psychiatric illness at the time of their deaths.
More needs to be done to prevent suicide, a public health problem that claims a life every 16 minutes in the United States. However, stigma and misconceptions about mental illnesses and suicide continue to be barriers. Project HELP has been working with those affected by suicide and other types of sudden death since 1986, providing individual and group counseling and advocacy.
On Nov. 15 Project HELP and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) will conduct one of our Out of the Darkness Community Walks here in Naples on Vanderbilt Beach.
We will also be sponsoring a short Diaper Derby crawl at the same time to help ensure that all members of our community can participate. It will be for babies and their families. They are asked to line up sponsors, just like walkers on the full, two-mile route.
Funds will support suicide prevention research and education as well as local programs. Walk with us and help bring suicide “out of the darkness.’’
Together we can help save lives. For more information or to participate in the event, please contact us at 649-1404.
And for those having emotional crises, our 24/7 hotline as always is 262-7227.
Maria T. LaRocco, Naples, Executive Director, Project HELP Inc.
Letter: What the ... ?
Editor, Daily News:
In today’s newspeak spirit of so-called fair play and equal time in the media, I take exception to the front page of the Sept. 4 edition.
The news should have been about Sara Palin’s speech as the vice presidential choice of the Republican Party, which, by the way, she delivered masterfully.
Even though that story was featured above the fold, it was dwarfed by the coverage right beneath by a bigger picture and story of Joe Biden visiting Fort Myers.
Why is this news? Perhaps if Biden had been in Naples, it might have warranted some coverage — but not front page. The Democrats had their time in the spotlight the week before.
Considering that this is the Republican’s convention and this is a Republican town, I am very disappointed.
I also don’t like Ike.
Dale Rogers, Naples
Letter: Your bias is showing
Editor, Daily News:
I watched the Republican National Convention and was totally electrified by the speech given by Sarah Palin.
It totally renewed my faith in politics. Instead of the status quo political rhetoric, she gave me hope that politics as usual could go away.
Palin is a breath of fresh air. She is bringing the human element back into politics. She has no hidden agendas. She is intelligent, articulate and I believe very capable of handling the job. Kudos to John McCain for having the foresight and guts to think outside the political box and choose her for a running mate.
Every morning I read several online newspapers. I was totally shocked at the lack of coverage on Thursday on your online newspaper regarding Palin’s speech! I had to search the entire site to even find a story regarding the convention.
Instead the headline news was about Joe Biden stumping in Fort Myers. It became very clear to me that your paper is totally biased towards the Democrats. It has also shaken my faith that I will receive valid information from your reporting during the next several months leading up to the election.
Sadly, the Daily News will not be my paper of choice to keep me informed regarding the upcoming election.

Letter: Seeing right through them
Editor, Daily News:
We are paying, in tax dollars, over $300 an hour for an investigator to tell our Lee County Commissioners if County Manager Donald Stilwell lied to them.
If the truth be known, we are really paying investigators so commissioners Frank Mann, Bob Janes and Ray Judah do not have to vote to say Stilwell lied to the Board Of County Commissioners until after the November elections. It has the appearance that the three are stalling for time and costing us money because they do not want to risk losing the vote of Lee County employees.
This is what I call self-serving. I thought that as elected officials they were supposed to serve us.
Let’s show them how powerful we can be.
Vote Judah, Mann and Janes out.
In November I will be voting for Carla Johnston and Les Cochran for Lee County commissioners.
Phyllis Abram, Fort Myers
Letter: Why water it down?
Editor, Daily News:
What was the major offense committed by Cesar and Geovanni Navarette that resulted in their pleading guilty last week?
The headline-capturing crime reported in the Daily News article on Wednesday said they were “harboring illegal aliens.”
Yet, how did Assistant Chief U.S. Attorney Doug Malloy, who actually worked in prosecuting the case, describe the Navarettes’ actions? “Slavery, plain and simple.”
The victims of the Navarettes, according to the federal indictment, were beaten, threatened, restrained, locked within storage trucks and forced against their will to work in local tomato fields.
Instead, the Daily News diminishes the severity of the violence and oppression these men suffered, going so far as to say in the first paragraph of the story that the Navarettes are being punished for “helping 15 illegal aliens stay on their Immokalee property.”
Locking men in trucks seems a bizarre definition of “help.”
Jordan Buckley, Immokalee

Editor, Daily News:
No convention boondoggle this time!
A woman, literally unknown, overnight becomes a star! She is intelligent, confident, experienced, attractive, conservative and on and on.
Regardless of your party affiliation, every women in the greatest country in the world should be proud of the “diamond in the wilderness” discovered in the great state of Alaska.
Unfortunately, she is the one with the most apparent experience/judgment abilities and not the one running for president.
The bright side is that the greatest country in the world has a lot to look forward to in its political future.

Letter: Better and brighter
Editor, Daily News:
Need of education:
Georgina Russo’s letter commenting on the fact that we should get rid of the Electoral College tells me she has not read the book “The Summer of 1787.”
The Articles of Confederation were not working.
David O. Stewart wrote the book last year and made it a very easy read. If you think about the varied background of the citizens involved, the widely dispersed population, the fact of slavery, the handling of our money — and those were just a few of the delegates challenges — it is remarkable we are a nation at all and not a collection of Baltic states.
I suggest she take the time to read the book and she will understand why we have an electoral college and, beyond that, why we need it today.
If we lose that check on our voting, either the East Coast or the West Coast, or both of them, will run the rest of the country — although much to their chagrin, in the future it might just be Texas and Florida.
Virginia Bailey, Naples
Letter: Heroism and its shadows
Editor, Daily News:
When I read the negative comments directed towards the letters of John Riccio and Jane Varner, one has to wonder if the folks writing these comments have been living in a cave for the past several years and denied access to world information; or are they just incapable of independent thought?
I suspect the latter is true. It would be interesting to compare the credentials of those letter writers to Varner, and particularly to Riccio — veteran, paratrooper — why anyone would jump out of a perfectly good airplane is beyond me — with two sons currently serving in the U.S. armed forces.
It’s been my observation that many of the very fervent supporters of this stupid Iraq war never served in our military (chicken hawks as defined by Jesse Ventura). One wonders if guilt is the driving force for much of their positions.
We also live in a society that requires constant public re-enforcement of affection and adoration and, as such, is probably responsible for the perpetual use of the word “hero.”
Riccio is correct in his assessment of what constitutes a hero. Hero is simply defined as performance “over and above the call of duty.” There are very few of us who fall in that category, although any prisoner of war gets my vote. Can you imagine what is going to happen to them now?
The writers attacking Riccio should lighten up because there are some events (as reported in John McCain’s book) which occurred during his tenure at the POW camp that may cast a shadow on the hero label.
Henry S. Kolesinski, Naples
Letter: Her reward
Editor, Daily News:
Letter writer Jean Crawford says she and her family are leaving the Catholic Church because the hierarchy “condones illegals.”
It seems she’s forgotten the Sermon on The Mount, where Jesus urged mankind to practice the corporal works of mercy, regardless of whether the poor were legal, illegal, black, white, yellow or polka dot.
Granted, some illegals thoughtlessly, even arrogantly, demand food, clothing and shelter. But they’re still people in need, and, relatively speaking, many Americans aren’t.
She notes that she and many others lived through the Depression and survived, True, but if other immigrants — legal or illegal — had offered them a helping hand, they would have taken it, gladly. (Actually Franklin D. Roosevelt helped with his Works Progress Administration, Civilian Conservation Corps, Social Security, Reconstruction Finance Corporation, and other federal programs.
Jean’s reward will certainly be less in heaven (and her time longer in purgatory) if she denies the poor the benefit of her largesse, regardless of the degree of their right to it (which is for others legally more skilled than either one of us to decide).
As my sainted Irish grandmother would say: “Be careful now you don’t throw out the baby with the bath water, me fine lad.”
Bill Bond, Bonita Springs
Letter: It’s up to us, get it?
Editor, Daily News:
When an oilman and environmentalists agree, you know change is in the air.
In Denver, Texas oil billionaire T. Boone Pickens and Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope talked about the Pickens Plan, which calls for huge increases in investment and production of wind power and using American natural gas as a transition.
In his recent ad Pickens says the current debate over drilling “misses the point.” The current political emphasis for more coastal drilling is a “head fake.” Pickens believes the current administration is wildly exaggerating how much oil is to be found offshore and in Alaska.
True economic opportunity for all Americans is in clean energy technologies like wind and solar. Even T. Boone Pickens, the oil billionaire, as well as Carl Pope, understand that.
When will our leaders in Washington? Only when we put the people in Washington who do understand.
Ann DeSimone Reyman, Naples
Letter: ‘I am listening’
Editor, Daily News:
I would like to express my deepest appreciation to the citizens of Collier County who have banded together to help me in my campaign for School Board, District 4.
It is a great honor and pleasure to have met so many caring and informed individuals over the past few months who share my concerns about the state of education in this county. Because of your support we were the top vote getter in District 4 for the primary election.
I ask for your continued support over the next few challenging months until the general election on Nov. 4. For those who cast their ballots for someone else, I hope that you will review my credentials and views via the League of Women Voters Web site at www.lwvcolliercounty.org or my Web site at www.VoteSprague08.com.
I look forward to the next few months. Please feel free to share your views with me. I am listening to your concerns.

Letter: Read all about it
Editor, Daily News:
I loved Tom Robinson’s “Letter of the Day.” It is such a positive assessment of the “Letters to the Editor” feature.
I also look forward to the letters and the whole editorial section.
I flounder on the political scene, mostly because I realize I’m not qualified to make some of the decisions that our elected leaders have to deal with. The varied letters and commentaries in the Daily News certainly give me direction and help guide me to what I believe is the correct way to vote.
Also, I enjoy listening to programs pro and con which I can weigh in my mind to come to an appropriate decision for myself.
Many of the cartoons go right over my head, and I hate to ask anyone because you know what they say about a joke that has to be explained! I, however, caught the one in the Aug. 29 Daily News because it’s exactly how I’ve felt about the whole Barack Obama campaign and the blind faith of his followers: “The Second Coming” indeed!
From what we’ve heard so far I feel like John McCain’s choice of Alaska’s Gov. Sarah Palin is refreshing and will prove to be an asset to his goal of becoming the president of the United States.
Mary Storto, Naples
Letter: On different frequencies
Editor, Daily News:
I agree with Jack Berry’s guest commentary in the Aug. 30 edition of the Daily News concerning WGCU’s broadcasting classical music in the high definition (HD) format.
WGCU has taken the elitists’ approach to follow the money. By removing classical music from their FM station, they have taken the “public” out of National Public Radio (NPR).
I’ve lived in New York, Boston and Buffalo and supported their NPR stations. All stations bemoan the fact that only a small percentage of listeners financially support their stations.
That’s the nature of NPR listeners. None of those stations cut back on their news, talk, or classical, popular or jazz music programs. The stations in those areas are not moving their music programs to the HD format. In fact the Metropolitan Opera will not feed their broadcasts to HD stations.
It appears that WGCU hasn’t even considered those drivers who like to listen to classical music on their car radios. I certainly will not change my AM/FM car radio to HD. I’ll be listening to my CDs.
I hope one of the other colleges or universities in the Naples area will establish its own NPR FM station and incorporate broadcast announcing into its curriculum. I’ll support that!
After contributing to WGCU for many years, I feel betrayed by their action. So, from here on, I’ll be listening to other NPR stations available on the Internet.
Nuts to you, WGCU!
Bert Stern, Naples
Letter: Not my idea of service
Editor, Daily News:
Jack Berry’s commentary on the appalling decision by WGCU-FM radio to change its classical music programming is right on the mark.
Those of us who enjoy listening to classical music, including the Metropolitan Opera, will now need to purchase a new high definition (HD) radio or be left out.
However, there are no HD radios in any of the major appliance stores in Collier County. I know — I went to all the outlets that WGCU recommended, only to be told they had none in stock and didn’t plan to be stocking them.
Sept. 8 will be a very sad day for me when all classical music programming will no longer be available without an HD radio.
I feel that public radio is no longer serving the community as it promised to do.

Thank you for your coverage on the “new” Edison State College. As a faculty member I can hardly convey the excitement on campus. This positive change to our community institution is a great step forward, and I hope you will keep an eye on the many innovations and continue to report on them.

Letter: Yoo-hoo?
Editor, Daily News:
Yup. You’ve done it again.
In the nice little note from Bob Beckwith about misspellings and word usage, you left the “s” out of Tuesday!
Yoo-hoo, is anyone there?
Shame on you for allowing your newspaper to hit the street with all these typos and poor grammar.

WOW....oldtimer gets into the racist game and look who is first to give him a kiss!!!!!
the resident racist....Rejoice....
"HER BLACKNESS"...really oldtimer and Rejoice why would you use that word when "her endorsement of Obama"....or "her Democratic leaning" or something similiar would have made the same point....if both of you were not making a racist statement????
Ms. Winfrey then issued the following statement:
"The item in today’s Drudge Report is categorically untrue. There has been absolutely no discussion about having Sarah Palin on my show. At the beginning of this Presidential campaign when I decided that I was going to take my first public stance in support of a candidate, I made the decision not to use my show as a platform for any of the candidates. I agree that Sarah Palin would be a fantastic interview, and I would love to have her on after the campaign is over."

FOX NEWS ran a "fair and balanced' one hour piece last night on Sarah Palin. Hopefully, yawl can get past your "egos and emotions" and learn something about a "women" who in her own right is real, smart, attractive, experienced, confident, educated, a mother of five and appears to have better judgement than the other three candidates put together.
Regardless of you party affiliation, this is a must see to understanding this tremendous human discovery.
Her biggest attribute is that she is from an average background and education. This "average person" has decided to be all she can be and she is succeeding!
What a breath of fresh air!!
Remember... we all start out as "average/equal if you will" what happens after that is a different story for each one of us!!
Not one of our former Presidents walked on water. Remember the Peanut Farmer of the 70's. If he could be President, you can to!!
Just "be all you can be"!!!
Have a great day and a better tomorrow!

When I read all the extreme right wing (Naples normal) comments regarding McCain's choice as his successor (and she will be if McCain is elected because he won't last through his term) I have to conclude that the republican inbreeding in Naples is rampant). No sane person would want this extreme right, religious fanatic (she makes radical Muslims seem like teddy bears), gun toting, baby popping novice to be in charge. By the NDN letters though, lots of Naples folks would welcome it. As I said-inbreeding-think about it. You all aren't to sane. You know, after living in Naples since 1979, I knew that.

as always Rejoice ...you only read the portion that fits your right wing agenda........
none of the candidates will appear on Oprah's show until after the election
is that too difficult for you to understand
NOBODY!! means NOBODY!!
not even Sarah Palin who has not yet been released for prime time interviews
"His (McCain's...my insert) campaign manager, Rick Davis, who spoke on “Fox News Sunday,” said the campaign would make her available according to its own needs.
“She’s not scared to answer questions,” Mr. Davis said. “But you know what? We run our campaign, not the news media. And we’ll do things on our timetable.”
He added: “Why would we want to throw Sarah Palin into a cycle of piranhas called the news media that have nothing better to ask questions about than her personal life and her children? So until at which point in time we feel like the news media is going to treat her with some level of respect and deference, I think it would be foolhardy to put her out into that kind of environment.”

You have what it takes to be on the School Board of Collier County. Your first hand experience is what it will take to help build back the strength and understanding the board needs.
November 4th will be your day and you will have the support of all.
Keep up the excellent work of informing the public with the important issues at hand.

Sarah Palin's mother-in-law uncertain about how she'll vote
BY NANCY DILLON
DAILY NEWS WEST COAST BUREAU CHIEF
Updated Sunday, August 31st 2008, 2:27 AM
Sato/AP
Faye Palin, Gov. Palin's mother-in-law
WASILLA, Alaska - Sarah Palin's hometown rallied around her as mayor - now Republicans wonder if the rest of America will warm up to the surprise pick from cold country.
Though her mother-in-law has doubts.
Faye Palin admitted she enjoys hearing Barack Obama speak, and still hasn't decided which way she'll vote.
"We don't agree on everything. "
Oh oh. Can she use her government authority to fire her mother in law?

in post # 2 Rejoice posts that according to
New York Times interview Obama said that the
Muslim prayer is the prettiest sound on earth at sunset......
of course he got this from a radical right wing blog which picked it up from Jerome Corsi's new hatchet book "The Obama Nation" which has been roundly critisized for it's factual errors and unsubstantiated claims and the above is not true
The REPUBLICAN PARTY HAD TOLD IT'S MEMBERS NOT TO BUY THE BOOK
but of course Rejoice publishes it anyway
Why conservatives should denounce anti-Obama book | WE BlogObama then recited the Adhan, or the Muslim call to prayer. Obama described the prayer as, “one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.” ...
blogs.kansas.com/weblog/2008/08/why-conservatives-should-denounce-anti-obama-book/
(following is the comment from the above site)
Why conservatives should denounce anti-Obama book Peter Wehner, a former deputy assistant to President Bush, wrote that it is in conservatives’ self-interest to denounce Jerome Corsi’s new hatchet book, “The Obama Nation.” After noting some of the many factual errors and unsubstantiated claims in the book, Wehner wrote: “Conservatism has been an intellectual home to people like Burke and Buckley. The GOP is the party that gave us Lincoln and Reagan. It seems to me that its leaders ought to make it clear that they find what Dr. Corsi is doing to be both wrong and repellent. To have their movement and their party associated with such a figure would be a terrible thing, and it will only help the cause of those who hold both the GOP and the conservative movement in contempt.”

"John McCain's VP pick is the governor of Alaska, a unknown hockey mom named Sarah Palin that no one ever heard of. All this HYSTERIA about a "failed Mother running on the GOP ticket isn't surprising. It's the result of the dramatic contrast of complete ineptitude and corruption of the last eight years, and an old man that promises more of the same. Even a "moose skinning" burger "mama" looks "appetizing" to a politically "starved" party. Watch for the "ecoli" the next few weeks.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Republican vice-presidential running mate Sarah Palin is offering her first televised interview to ABC News in the coming week in Alaska.
Palin, the surprise pick of Republican presidential nominee John McCain, has been giving campaign speeches alongside the Arizona senator since the party convention but has not sat down for an interview about her views.
A McCain-Palin adviser says an interview was offered to ABC's Charlie Gibson several days ago and that they expect it to happen in the latter part of the week in Alaska.
Palin is the governor of Alaska and is expected to return home at midweek after more joint appearances with McCain.
well they are finally letting her speak.......in her hometown with the right wing ABC Gibson...how many "softball" questions can they ask in an hour????

algonquin - thank you for help with posting links
actually, i'm not aware of any racial inequality and civil rights violations nowadays...unless you're talking about reverse.
michelle obama is clearly aggravated at the "white man" and both she and obama have for 20 years attented a church where a racist reverend preaches to them (and marries them and baptizes their children)
it bothers me that obama has voluntarily subjected himself to such radical preachings and now claims he doesn't really agree with the reverend on everything...really, obama, 20 YEARS? and you don't agree?!?!? gimme a break!

MCCain/Palin is a "great GOP ticket", but McCain and anorexic Ann Coulter would have been better. At least she , too, is a New York Times Best Seller (For GOP "nut" cases starved for lies and distortions) authoress, ala Corsi. Palin has the necessary "whining" voice, but hasn't learned to "write" yet. Maybe she can take the "crash course" ala what she is doing now prepping for "her interviews"? She's so "deliciously abstinet"!

The average of polls now show McCain/Palin even with Obama/Biden in the race for President. How scarey is that?
With everything that is wrong with our country Obama should be ahead by 10%, even if he is half black.
Obama asked a question recently 'Do they [mccain/palin], think we are that stupid'? The new polls show Americans are that stupid and they deserve what they get. Four more years of the same is now a possibility

In his book The Real McCain, author Cliff Schecter claims that John McCain made extremely ugly remarks about his wife Cindy McCain during a tirade witnessed by three reporters and two aides. "At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain's hair and said, 'You're getting a little thin up there,'" Schechter writes. "McCain's face reddened, and he responded, 'At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you .unt.' McCain's excuse was that it had been a long day. If elected president of the United States, McCain would have many long days."
Boy, gramps remarks ought to help with the female vote, just none that I know. To think that someone would refer to a woman that had his child with this terminology is way beyond comprehension.

unlike you Rejoice.....resident racist I own up to my mistakes and sourced the Kristof column and he does claim Obama said what you stated
so I was wrong when I said it did not happen but in my post I made no reference to Kristof whatsoever so you are wrong to claim that!!!
but as always you only only quote the portion of the column that suits your agenda
you do not say Kristof also said that Obama IS THE MOST EXPERIENCED to be the next President!
"Op-Ed Columnist Obama: Man of the World By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF
WASHINGTON JUNE 18/08
The conventional wisdom about Barack Obama is that he’s smart and charismatic but so inexperienced that we should feel jittery about him in the Oval Office.
But that view is myopic. In some respects, Mr. Obama is far more experienced than other presidential candidates.
His experience as an antipoverty organizer in Chicago, for example, gives him a deep grasp of a crucial 21st-century challenge — poverty in America — that almost all politicians lack. He says that grass-roots experience helps explain why he favors not only government spending programs, like early childhood education, but also cultural initiatives, like efforts to promote responsible fatherhood.
In foreign policy as well, Mr. Obama would bring to the White House an important experience that most other candidates lack: he has actually lived abroad. He spent four years as a child in Indonesia and attended schools in the Indonesian language, which he still speaks."
you can read the rest of the complimentary column yourself...and remember....you cannot trash the author as you have already praised him to high heaven!!!!!

Mini me's attempt to divert all the criticism to Miss Moose and keep the spotlight off all of his shortcoming is failing.
The interest in the mayor of Podunk has diminished. He can't hide under her skirt anymore, even though he felt most comfortable as her cheerleader. Learned that from his mentor.
Let the real games begin. It will be interesting watching him crack when the pressure increases, just like in Viet Nam. He may end up doing ad's for the opposition by Nov., just like he did for the North Vietnamese.
The mans uncontrollable temper will do him in again, as soooo many times in the past.

Anthem...reportedly with with "gusto"
does that make him "a socialist" anymore than Obama reciting the Muslim prayer makes him a Muslim
from the National Post: June 18/08
OTTAWA -- It may the most sought-after ticket in Ottawa, but when Republican presidential nominee John McCain addresses a sold-out luncheon on Friday it will be hard to find a Conservative politician in the crowd.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper will be out of town -- rumours suggest his absence is more than just convenient timing -- and he declined to meet with Mr. McCain, sources say. Mr. McCain's advisors had hoped for a formal meeting with the Prime Minister or someone from government, but were told there would be no meeting during his Ottawa visit.
The Prime Minister's Office, concerned about the optics, also advised staff working for MPs to avoid the speech. Tickets for Mr. McCain's speech sold out in an hour but, among the 380 guests, the federal Conservatives will be limited to those with official reasons to attend. David Emerson will be there as Minister of Foreign Affairs. Conservative MP Rob Merrifield will also go in his capacity as co-chair of the Canada-U.S. Interparliamentary Group.

You see, it might make sense if it was a Biden/Obama ticket.
Then you would have the experience like McCain/Palin.
But nooooo! The loony left went for the charismatic upstart with no experience to justify his meteoric shooting star.
Hope he sputters and disappears.

We leave that to the neocons and their traditional disrespect for women. Their pandering went too far this time. Must have forgot the two months left until the election. Too much time left to focus all the attention back on grampa. He c.nt handle all the heat coming his way. He has a well deserved history of folding when times get tough. Stories abound from his fellow vets that he let down by confessing.
Their recollections will hit the airwaves this week. As Karl Rove preaches, hit them at their strength. Parading as a war hero when ones actions were in fact traitorous will be his downfall.

we really don't know how many on this site are operating under different names....you have been accused of also posting under Rejoice!!!!
in the meantime I can understand the right's preoccupation with Oprah because of the following from National Examainer.com Aug13/08:
"The list of celebrities who have endorsed Republicans in the primary campaign is a fairly short one. Kelsey Grammer, Adam Sandler and Ben Stein gave money to Rudy Giuliani way back then. Chuck Norris donated to Mike Huckabee once upon a time.
But what celebrities support the guy who will be on the ballot in November, John McCain?
We went to WikiAnswers to find out. The answer field was blank.
So we went to Yahoo Answers. Another resounding zero. The answer there came in the form of a question: Why don't celebrities support McCain?
Finally we Googled "celebrities who support John McCain." And there we found the entire list. Heidi Montag.
We hate to say it, but that's definitely not going to be enough to make a celebrity out of McCain's wannabe daughter Meghan McCain, no matter what she posts in her blogette.
At one point, candidate McCain, enthralled by his celebrity endorsement, actually said, " I never miss an episode of 'The Hills.' "
That's a good one. As if anybody over 70 watches MTV. "

Oh no, say it ain't sooooo.
mini me is gonna get hit from both directions.
From the Huffington Post.......
"Romney knew it would be rude to be a sore loser. So, even though he thought he had endorsed McCain in the Feb. 7 speech that ended his own presidential bid, Romney submitted to cameras and questions a week later to reiterate that support for the rival he once said lacked the economics background to be president.
Romney also established the Free and Strong America PAC, a political action committee dedicated to helping not only McCain but also like-minded congressional and state political candidates. But the PAC also gives Romney a vehicle to raise money and travel the country, promoting himself as much as the candidates he wants to endorse.
He used a similar committee, and his 2006 chairmanship of the Republican Governors Association, to build the network of advisers, contributors and supporters he relied on during his presidential campaign. The Free and Strong America PAC also allows gives Romney a headquarters where he can remain in contact with his inner circle of advisers.
Should McCain continue to fail, it's no stretch to see Romney hitting the trail again well before Nov. 5 in pursuit of the job he wanted from the start."
The Republican Party unity is collapsing and the true threat to an OBAMA presidency is gearing up.
Mitt will split the party between the extreme right wing Bush/McSame/Palin pro war wing and the moderate Romney supporters that beleive in the sanctity of the constitution.....
Someone tell Miss Seal Blubber that it is "bye bye Miss American pie......She will be home well before her indictments hit Nov.1.

Canuck: Who cares what celebrities think? Do you really care what Tom Hanks eats for breakfast? Just because someone can act doesn't make them intelligent. Just look at some of the nut-bag causes they espouse.
But when Oprah uses her celebrity to help Obama, then stays out of the situation (was McCain ever on her show?), you've got to realize she is scum.
Face it: She's just as wrong on Obama as she was on that book.

"Rejoice, your point about Oprah: Is she a racist?"
The answer to this question is a resounding YES if the words quoted in Canuk's post #3 actually came from Oprah's own mouth:-
"At the beginning of this Presidential campaign when I decided that I was going to take my first public stance in support of a candidate, I made the decision not to use my show as a platform for any of the candidates."
In all her years in showbusiness, Oprah has never before felt the need to publicly announce her party affiliation.
Coincidence?
I think not.

It's really a stretch to try to make Obama's saying McCain hasn't attacked my Muslim Religion to mean something other than what it was. Obama said McCain hadn't gone around lying that Obama was a Muslim. You know what Obama meant, so quit trying to make it into something else.
Also, you can't criticize his 20 years in Rev. Wright's Christian Church and then call him a Muslim.
Also, after having been so severely discriminated against, why is it hard to understand Blacks trying to find a sense of themselves, separate from Whites? The transition for older blacks has been difficult.
Obama is not of that generation and hasn't lived the discrimination. He worked as a community organizer to try to help in some way their plight after so many had been laid off of their jobs in the steel industry.
I believe Obama also wanted to get a sense of what the inner city was like and what their struggles are. To ridicule that is disgusting. I believe it is admirable and of far more recognizable importance than being a mayor of a small town.
Sarah has not a clue of the duties of a community organizer. Someone wrote that for her, and she merely read the words and then thought she was clever. But her speech writer didn't have a clue either. And that's not the only thing her speech was way off on. A real big one was that Obama would raise your taxes. She said that to a group of people that I doubt very many made over $250,000 a year. So, here we are again, right from the start. Lies, lies, lies.

vshark1,
You're right, of course. The endless discussions on here won't change the way anyone votes, but the letters today are excruciatingly boring. We could try having a pleasant chat about suicide prevention or the pros and cons of broadcasting classical music in HD. We could discuss the virtues, or otherwise, of the Electoral College. We could always discuss (again) whether John Riccio's motives are honorable or not. But in the end, the presidential campaign is the single most important issue in America today.
I am reminded of the buid-up to the election of JFK. I was just a child, but I can recall the passionate debates my parents and their friends had, often into the early hours.
We are living in very exciting times. Who wants to discuss Bill Bond's religious claptrap when we can talk about being part of history in the making?

Sarah Palin is no longer a mayor, she is the GOVERNOR of Alaska. That's a STATE, by the way, not a small town. Simply look up Obama on Wikipedia. In my humble opinion, He is intelligent, but he actually thinks about, analyzes and studies issues with his own brain. He passed up high paying jobs to actually work with poor people and a sub- culture of people who have lost their jobs ( an extremely comman phenomenen in this country- even Anheiser -Busch has been sold to a Belgian company ) and registered 450,000 people to vote. He was a professor of Constitutional law for 8 years- I bet GWB, McCain or least of all Sarah Palin ever took one class on the subject.BHO wants to solve the problems in our country and make it better. The Republican party masterfully hypnotizes people with the flag waving and the emotional side of patriotism, and religion and "family values" nonsense, and brainwashes people that elections are about wedges issues like abortion. They are most successful in convincing people that the Democratss want to take your money in the form of higher taxes to give it to lazy black people in the form of a welfare check that they then spend on booze and drugs. The republican party is about making rich people richer. That was Sarah Palins role in Alaska. That was GWB"s role in the White House, the real reason behind the Iraq war and off shore drilling and everything else they promote.I feel sad for the believers- you are all being used and manipulated.Republicans don't have any problem with "Socialism" when all of us poor taxpayers are sharing in their losses- Fannie mae, Freddie Mac, Bank failures etc etc. But they want to keep their profits all to themselves. Please be more open minded about Obama

I hope everyone realizes the seriousness of a McCain/Palin administration who will invade or bomb Iran.
We financially and in our military cannot afford this, and the ramifications could fall on us in a rain of misery and loss beyond our wildest dreams.
Palin is of the End Times, Armageddon belief. They do not care if the Middle East goes up in a fire ball and we all suffer and collapse, because then the Rapture comes and all the Pentacostals and their ilk will revel in it, and all the rest of us will be thrown into Hell.
Pay close attention to those two up there. They offer nothing that will improve the condition of this country. They only offer goodies for their own favorites.
I say again, McCain cannot distance himself from the absolute failure of George Bush because he voted with him over 90% of the time.
His foreign policy is the clone of Bush's. We will have no hope, no future with McCain/Palin. And women, you'd better think hard before you vote entirely against yourself just because Sarah is a Woman. She's not a woman who cares about you. She cares about herself and her fundamentalist beliefs. She is an enemy to our country's people and our Constitution.

Commonsense, thank you for your excellent blog #63. You have pointed out so many important points to think about in this election. You have not resorted to enuendo or trying to find some illicit connection for McCain, Palin, Obama or Biden. We've heard enough of that garbage and reaching to find something negative to harp on, when it is the issues and the know how for them to tackle those issues.
It is about, who understands our govenment, our Consitution, our principles and what makes this country's economony go round.
What we need is a knowledgable person all the way around, and that is Obama. What we need is someone with judgment, someone thoughtful who will not just leap headlong without giving thought to what he was doing or giving thought to the ramifications as was done by Bush and backed by McCain in this Iraq war. Barack saw clearly what would happen, and he was right. It shows his judgment, like Bush Sr.'s, was good.
McCain is temperamental, quick to jump, he doesn't think; he just says, "I want." We cannot tolerate anymore of this kind of stupidity connected also with a stubborn personality that will not change course even when it's over a cliff.
Obama can see ahead. He has prescience, and that's a rare gift. We must go with him if we want to survive and if we want our children to have a future.

Change - "Alter, make different, exchange"
Change in politics: Term limits, line item veto,
all legislation to be specific no attachments, and no more "pork"!
These simple four "CHANGES" that will help to change the way we do things. Obviously a 51% majority will prevail as the "MAJORITY RULES".
Again, one person will not affect change. Please listen and try to understand this basic concept.
Airing your thoughts daily is our first amendment
right. If everyone would channel their efforts and contact their elected officals, rgearding any and all topics, a "majority opinion" would soon become apparent to them.
Be dynamic, be a mover and shaker by putting your opinions in the hands of those who work for us and must produce lest we "FIRE THEM"!
In the meantime continue to express your views which at the end of the day will not affect anything!

I'm not going to vote Republican, but I think some of you are being unfair to Sarah Palin. Yes, she thinks like a conservative, but she has done some good things.
I agree with vashork1 #44. It gets tiresome to read the same things over and over by some of the bloggers. We should be voting on what we believe in and not personalities. I'm voting against McCain and Palin because my philososphy is different than theirs. Both McCain and Palin might be nice people, but I don't like what they stand for. It's only natural to vote for people that are more in line with what we believe.
We don't have to say things that ridicule and that have no bearing on the election. It's not hard for me to decide who to vote for, because I like the Democrat's approach to solving our problems than the Republicans. We all have a brain, so why don't we let everyone choose for themselves. Saying the same things everyday isn't going to solve any of our problems.
I agree with BigG. There are other things we could be discussing. Sadly, most people don't want to discuss anything but the election and sling their mud.

Rationalman, this is the most important thing before us now. Our future depends on it. And those two presidential tickets are as different as night and day.
We have to put our minds to this now. We have less than two months left to get the facts out so we can decide.
You should be careful saying how nice Sarah is. She's not nice. She's not nice to gays. She thinks they're sinful, and she would deny them their rights as equal human beings in this country. That's not nice. That's vicious. And I am not gay. But I don't like to see people treated so unfairly. I know you're not a woman, but maybe you could sympathize with what we women are going to face under this administration. A Constitution that will deprive rights and be fashioned in the mode of the Religious Right Wing.
They do not deserve your kind words. They are not kind to others. They are not nice. They are hard.
Boulderbilly, thank you for that interesting blog #32 about McCain's insulting his wife Cindy. I copied it. It says alot about him, calling his wife such a name when it was she and her father who got him started in the first place. What a jerk he is.

Canuck,
Re your post #66. You are clutching at straws, and you know it.
Oprah Winfrey is black. She has one of the most well known faces in the country and has never openly supported a presidential candidate until a black man entered the race. Pretty transparent stuff.
Pastor John Hagee is not a celebrity with the power to persuade millions of gullible people across America to follow his lead.
As for Daddy Yankee - he is Latino. How is his support of McCain racist? You're simply not making any sense.

"The Republican party masterfully hypnotizes people with the flag waving and the emotional side of patriotism"
As for being hypnotized by a presidential candidate, the Obama followers are perfect examples. They ignore the fact that he says nothing, but swoon over the way he says it! Their adoration borders on worship. They seem to believe he was sent by God to save the world. Scary.
"Simply look up Obama on Wikipedia. In my humble opinion, He is intelligent, but he actually thinks about, analyzes and studies issues with his own brain."

do you not think that a woman who came from nowhere to become a billionaire has the smarts to disect the political rhetoric and endorse the person who she thinks has the policies best for your country...
are all the white folk who will vote for McCain racist because do not want to vote for a man of colour...or they falsely say he is a Muslim..like many posting here
that's why your statement is racist and has nothing to do with the politics of the election

Canuck,
"as for Hagee....consult your dictionary about the word racist....when used as an adjective.....
"discriminatory on basis of race or religion"
apology accepted!!!!
No apology offered.
When used in this sense, racism refers to a race of which virtually all the people are of the same religion i.e. Muslims. One cannot be racist against Catholics because you are not all of the same race. You cannot be considered racist against Atheists, because we are not all of the same race. Now bigotry, well that's another story altogether.
How do you know Oprah's decision to suppot Obama is NOT based on race?
Yes, I do believe a woman with Oprah's smarts can disect the political rhetoric etc. I just question why, after 30+ years on the public stage, she has chosen not to do so until now.
Fair question, dontcha think?
No, I don't think all the white folks who will vote for McCain are racist - I think they are capapble of disecting the political rhetoric and endorsing the person who they think has the best policies for our country.

atheism is not a religion so a person cannot be racist who speaks against it

Big G, my apologies, I thought you were up on the speeches where Palin compared her mayor's job with Obama's Community organizing. So, I didn't go into a long preface of what I was referring to. Next time when I see your name, I won't assume you know anything.
As far as my getting hysterical over what an invasion of Iran would do to us, well, believe me, what I write is an understatement.
Just as Bush and McCain both think that we somehow should invade, control and run the Middle East, we should be able to see by now what that is doing to us. We should be able to comprehend that a debt nearing 10 trillion dollars is getting out of hand. But also, we have to see that we continue every year to add to that debt over 400 billion dollars.
Now Our government has taken over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac because they couldn't let it fail. That initial cost will be about 500 billion dollars.
And remember every one of those billions makes our interest payments go up, forever.
If you on the Right Wing don't realize how precariously we sit and to whom we owe much of this debt, then I'd have to say, you're no Republicans. What we have been doing is fiscal insanity. And what you right wing war hawks recommend is beyond fiscal insanity, it is also a complete lack of understanding of how our power stands next to the rest of the world.
You've all heard I presume of "The Tipping Point?"
Well, I think we're approaching it, and that isn't hysteria, that's just plain common sense and seeing where we are, what we face and what are the ramifications of our choices.
Invading Iran will bring disaster upon us. We are too weakened to withstand what will be coming at us because of it. And, if you think Oil prices are high now, you haven't seen anything yet.
The best we could hope for is that other countries whom we've been making enemies of don't get involved. If they do, America will be unrecognizable.
Scoff if you like. But just think about it a moment or too, and then tell me how I'm wrong. Don't just say I'm hysterical.

More people live in Collier and Lee counties combined, by far, than in the entire state of Alaska.

Palin's sh'' is about to hit the fan. Check out her church and what she say's in her 'speak'.
She believes God sent us to Iraq, her church speaks in 'tongues', and believes Alaska is where everyone will come to when God gets mad and destroys the rest of America.
Palin is WAY out there.

MikeM..post #92....don't you just love it when these right wing poster only tell you half the story....only that which suits their agenda.....in the above MikeM posts:
George Obama also told the magazine that “I live here on less than a dollar month,” and “if anyone says something about my surname, I say we are not related. I am ashamed.”
note he uses closed quotes as this is the complete sentence and leaves the impression he is ashamed of being related to Obama..
now following is the exact quote from US magazine August 20/08
note the rest of the sentence after ashamed
"I live like a recluse, no-one knows I exist," said George, who has the same father as the Illinois senator.
"If anyone says something about my surname, I say we are not related," he added. "I am ashamed," he said of the way he lives.
George, who recently enrolled in a local technical college, has met Obama twice: when he was 5-years-old and in 2006 when the senator visited Nairobi.
and now the rest of the story.......
"Last night U.S. senator Barack Obama took his place in the history books as the first black presidential nominee of a major political party.
Obama opponents have accused the Illinois senator of neglect. A Texas Republican advert, poses questions to his supporters, "If Barack Obama cares so much about your family, why doesn't he take care of his family first?"
This is after an Italian magazine "Vanity Fair" reported that Obama has a half brother George Hussein Obama living in a slum on the outskirts of Nairobi on "less than a dollar a month."
George who is the youngest of Obama's six half brothers told the local Daily Nation newspaper that he did not live on less than a dollar a month and that "life is good." He's weary of speaking to swarms of journalists who have visited him at his home saying he fears skewed interpretations of his interviews may jeopardize his brother's presidential campaign.
Malik Obama, who is seen as the family's spokesman in Kenya said the attention was unnecessary.
Obama's Kenyan family is keeping a close eye on the campaign and hope their brother will make it to be the first black American president."
New Tang Dynasty Television...online
it is just too easy..and this story can be put to rest once and for all!!!!

Re #90 MikeM Sure, we are better off under Bush and the GOP. Just ask anybody with a mortgage in foreclosure. Just ask a Republican during an election campaign. Just ask anybody gassing up their car. Just ask a "dreamer". Like the commercial sez... "Let Mikey do it"!

MikeM, Wall Street paints a different picture this week than your IBD. Unemployment is over 6% and that doesn't include those whose payments have run out, or they gave up looking.
Our National debt is about 10 trillion, up 5 trillion from when Bush took office, and that doesn't include all the FICA taxes they've thrown into the regular budget which makes it look like less of a deficit each year. Our total debt also includes 53 trillion dollars in unfunded liabilities like Soc. Security etc.
The Fed just took over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to keep the financial markets from collapsing. That will initially cost about 500 billion dollars.
People's energy costs are killers and winter is coming. Groceries are up and I question that figure that reflects the average income. If that includes a lot of wealthy who made much more money, that would skew the figure.
The job losses are the biggest we've seen in a long, long time. And our Iraq expenditures that they manage to put a lot of them off budget, how they do that I don't know, but they continue at 10 billion a month.
Also, we deficit spend every year about 450 billion which adds quickly to a rising debt. All of this increases our interest payments in huge amounts which grow every year.
And now Crazy McCain will invade Iran if he gets elected. And just as crazy is the religious fruitcake, End Times Palin who will welcome Armageddon in the Middle East that could start with our invasion of Iran. Fun times ahead under McCain Palin.
MikeM, you'd better take another look and quit trying to paint a picture of this country that is unrecognizable. Face the facts and quit trying to sugar coat them for your lunatic duo.
