BONITA SPRINGS The members of the Lee County School Board continued discussion over foregoing all of their travel and event expenses Tuesday.
Members reaffirmed their promise to not bill the district for any in-county travel, but will be unable to approve a change to its policy for at least a month. The board expects to have a new policy to approve on Sept. 23 that will prevent them from billing the district for travel to and from board meetings, but the members felt the policy was not enough.
They don't want the ability to bill the district for any in-county travel, nor any meals or attendance costs for events they are expected to attend as board members. Such a policy may violate state law, which allows board members the right to be reimbursed for in-county business travel, School Board Attorney Keith Martin told the board members.
"I'm not certain that the school board has the authority to take away that right away from the board members," Martin said. "That's a discussion that the board can have, but I'm not prepared to give advice on that at this time."
The board decided to review a policy beyond the one discussed Tuesday at their retreat meeting, which they expect to be scheduled by November.

What an absolutely novel idea. Glad they thought of cutting expenses...
