BONITA SPRINGS Reading, writing, arithmetic, social studies and karate?
A new charter school is slated for Bonita Springs, pending approval by the Lee County School Board later this month. The Bonita Springs Preparatory and Fitness Academy expects to intertwine traditional kindergarten through fifth grade academics for about 240 students with physical activity instruction, including martial arts, tennis and soccer.
Though an exact address was not available at press time, a map provided by the School District indicates the school would be located in a 30,000 square-foot space in the area of Highland Woods Boulevard, which is north of West Terry Street. A strip mall is located in the area.
The Lee County School Board reviewed the charter briefly on Tuesday afternoon. It is expected to vote on approving the charter Sept. 23.
“That’s very interesting. I’m eager to learn more about it,” School Board Vice Chairwoman Jane Kuckel said after reviewing the charter proposal. “We’re all about choice. We’re all about customizing to the needs and wants of our students.”
The School Board can reject the charter application of the school, but any rejection would go to a state board for a final review. School Board Chairwoman Jeanne Dozier said recently that the state board is made up mostly of state-appointed charter school
representatives.
If approved, the school’s first, five-year charter will allow for an annual operating budget of about $1.5 million. The school expects to have 436 students by the end of its fifth year and expects to hold classes up to eighth grade by its fourth year.
The school will have uniforms, will test using the Stanford 10, Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test and fitness assessments with personal goal-setting for each student. The school will hold hours longer than the typical elementary or middle school. It will hold classes from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to accommodate a more than one-hour fitness session during which students will learn the various sports. Other elementary and middle schools in the area hold classes from about 9 a.m. to
4 p.m.
If the charter is approved, it will become the second charter school to be located in Bonita Springs, next to the A-graded Bonita Springs Charter
School.
