NAPLES For just having made it through two games this season, the Southwest Florida gridiron has already seen its share of athletes make early names for themselves.
However, while most stories end on just one side of the ball, Brodrick Jenkins is getting looks on offense and defense — and not just from his coaching staff.
In South Fort Myers dominating 27-9 win over Lely last Friday, Jenkins set the tone early, scoring on an 80-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dallas Crawford on the Wolfpack’s first play from scrimmage.
He wasn’t finished there, either.
In the second quarter, Jenkins scored again; this time on an 86-yard touchdown run to score South’s final points of the game.
As if Jenkins’ big-play ability isn’t enough to concern and dishearten opponents, they’ll have to keep their eyes open when he is playing in the defensive secondary as well.
Against the Trojans, Jenkins came away with two of the five interceptions that Lely quarterback Dennis Marcelin threw while trying to catch up to the damage that Jenkins played a large part in creating.
“Against Lely I just remembered that one of our goals as a team was to beat all the Collier County teams that we played this season,” he said. “I think the way that I play is a big influence on the team and I really want to surpass what I did last season and get 1,700 or 1,800 total yards.”
South head coach Grant Redhead knows that he has a commodity in a player like Jenkins — even on a team loaded with skill players.
“It was evident that he came to play and he set the tone early for the team with that big run,” he said. “He had a nice run off a bubble screen and two interceptions — some schools think he is a little short, but he can get up there with anyone and he is a great leader by example too.”
With that kind of reputation, it’s not a surprise he has been contacted by dozens of college football teams hoping to take advantage of his services.
So far, Jenkins has been most heavily recruited by Indiana, but that doesn’t figure to last if he keeps playing on the level he’s been at since this preseason’s game against Barron.
Jenkins, who is a three-star prospect as determined by Rivals.com, has also received scholarship offers from Boston College, Iowa, Iowa State, Louisville, N.C. State, West Virginia and Syracuse. While his preference is to remain a defensive player, his offensive prowess has upped his value to schools giving him a call.
“I want to play cornerback in college. That is my decision and that is what I have been doing since I was 12,” he said. “I guess I do well with the ball in my hands, but that all just comes naturally to me.”
