NAPLES Holly Reschke is as unassuming as they come, but rarely is there any doubt who or where she is on a volleyball court.
Keying Gulf Coast’s ascent in the area volleyball scene, Reschke has been the driving force behind the Sharks getting off to a 6-0 start this season.
Last week, when Gulf Coast entered into a stretch of three straight games against district and conference opponents, the junior outside hitter came up big, slamming home 33 kills, stuffing back 10 blocks, and serving up 5 aces. It was her performance against fellow volleyball powerhouse Naples, however, that solidified her nomination as female prep of the week.
Finishing with 13 kills and a block, Reschke helped defeat the Golden Eagles in three games, 25-15, 25-18, 25-15.
“We were going into a game against an undefeated Naples team, and we focused on getting her opportunities to score, and she is twice as good this season as she was last year,” Gulf Coast coach Christy Wright said. “When she is on, she is hard to stop — in all three of our matches last week she crushed the ball and I don’t think that anyone got a dig on her.”
In Reschke’s eyes, it’s all just a lot of fun, but the combination of Reschke, Karina Mambuca, and setter Sundai Weston has had done nothing but frustrate opponents.
“I’ve been working my butt off because I want this season to be really, really special,” Reschke said. “Sundai and I have been working together for just about two years now, and I think after last year we are really starting to get into a groove.”
That has been the calling card of the Sharks — no one player is as good as they have shown without the other players around her. Still, that doesn’t mean that players like Reschke haven’t been carrying more than their share of the load.
“Sundai is the best setter in the area, and she does everything,” Wright said. “But it’s nice to have a team full of hitters, and especially have Holly as a safety valve. She has been hitting balls that have been coming in at odd angles, and I know that if we need to come up with a big point, we can look at her.”
Reschke has also dedicated this season torward getting some noteriety among college programs, and has already visited FGCU as well as getting familiar with other schools through participating at various camps. Reschke’s attitude is clear, though. That can wait for a bit. For now, it’s all about making the most of this season.
“We have team goals to win the district and conference and then maybe make our way into regionals,” Reschke said. “I think that this season has been so exciting, and we are all doing so well to play together. I get so excited when Karina gets a kill, too. We’re just having a lot of fun.”
