Bonita woman still in critical condition, firefighters recovering after late-night blaze

A Bonita Springs woman remained in critical condition Saturday at Tampa General Hospital after being rescued from her burning mobile home late Thursday.

After Jonah Johnston dragged his disabled neighbor, Rosa Patino, 58, from her burning trailer, doctors gave Patino a 50-50 chance to survive the severe burns that covered half her body, according to Patino’s family.

The blaze at 27780 Oakland Drive hospitalized two others — Lt. Jason Brod and firefighter Mark Harris, both of the Bonita Springs fire district.

Brod suffered third-degree burns on his back and neck when the trailer ceiling collapsed as he fought the fire inside. He is expected to remain at NCH North Naples Hospital for a few more days due to his injuries, officials said.

Harris was released Thursday night after being admitted for smoke inhalation.

The origin of the late-night blaze was still being investigated by the state Fire Marshal’s office.

Earlier story

Jonah Johnston’s late night hunger for a double cheesburger and apple pie placed the 31-year-old Bonita Springs resident in the right place at the right time on Thursday.

A different kind of gut instinct pushed him into action, when he dragged disabled neighbor Rosa Patino from her burning mobile home.

“If it wasn’t for him, she’d be dead,” Patino’s brother, Luis Cardeno, said Friday.

As it is, Patino, 58, is still fighting for life. Doctors gave her a 50-50 chance to survive the severe burns that covered half her body, Cardeno, 49, said. She’s currently at the burn unit of Tampa General Hospital, and was listed in critical condition as of 1 p.m. Friday.

The blaze at 27780 Oakland Drive hospitalized two others — Lt. Jason Brod and firefighter Mark Harris, both of the Bonita Springs Fire district. Brod suffered third degree burns on his back and neck when the trailer ceiling collapsed as he fought the fire inside. His injuries should keep him at North Collier Hospital for a few more days, district spokeswoman Debbi Redfield said.

Harris was released Thursday night after being admitted for smoke inhalation.

The origin of the late-night blaze was still being investigated by the state Fire Marshal’s office.

Johnston and Cardeno related what happened.

Johnston was walking home with his fiancee from a late night snack at McDonald’s around 11:30 p.m., when he spotted 5-year-old Maria Cardeno standing outside her trailer, near the road.

“It was too late for her to be outside,” he remembered thinking.

Maria took him to her brother, 7-year-old Nathan, who stood closer to the trailer. It was on fire, Nathan said, and his aunt Rosa was still inside in a back bedroom.

No flames were visible, Johnston said. He went to the entrance to look inside.

“When I opened the door, a big cloud of black smoke hit me in the face,” he said.

He ran inside two different times, only to be pushed back from the heavy smoke. On the third time, he made it to Patino’s back bedroom. She was there, wedged in a small nook between her bed and a closet, both of which were on fire, Johnston recalled.

She was conscious but unable to move. Patino is diabetic, and her right leg was amputated a few years ago due to complications of the disease, family members said. She had also been going to dialysis three times a week.

“She’s there, sitting against a little table, which was starting to catch fire,” he said.

“She kept telling me, ‘I’m here, I’m here, help me.’”

But when Johnston tried to pull Patino up by her forearm, her burned skin peeled off in his hand, he said. Patino passed out. Johnston tried again, grabbing her by her nightgown and dragging her out of the back bedroom, he said.

When the two got to the front door, Cardeno was there to help pull his sister out.

Johnston said he’s still amazed that such a dire situation was “put on me.” And he can’t forget Patino’s condition when he pulled her out.

“I didn’t feel like no hero, the way she was burned,” Johnston said.

But Cardeno felt differently.

“I told him for all the bad stuff he’s done in his life, this makes up for it,” he laughed.

Johnston has been arrested over a dozen times in the past eight years, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Web site, and charged with a variety of crimes, ranging from possession of drugs, burglary, leading police on a chase and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

As for the two children, they are staying Cardeno, who is their biologically father. Patino took them several years ago to help him out, he said.

All their belongings were destroyed in the fire. Early Friday morning, several women from Bonita Springs Elementary School brought clothing for the two children. The Red Cross was on scene later that day.

Firefighters are asking for any additional donations to be made to the Bonita Springs Assistance Office. The phone number is 239-992-3034.

Mr. Johnston...you're the true definition of neighbor helping neighbor. You are a role model for us all. May God bless you.

To the firefighters injured -- please get well soon, and stay that way! Your service is ALWAYS above and beyond...you run into burning buildings when we're all running out. God bless you as well.

Lastly, Ms. Patino, may you heal and return to good health. You're in my prayers.

Check out the In the Know to the right of this article next to posts No. 5 and 6. NDN, have some compassion about "burning questions that bother residents to no end."

Great Job Mr. Jonah....you are a TRUE hero. I hope this woman can recover from these injuries. She has medical problems in addition to this now...

And to the firefighters...hope you are fine and get back to work soon....We appreciate all you do.

Bullbat

What I heard was it was undetermined if everyone was outside. They did not get the word that the children were safe and they went inside to check.

#11,,,that makes much more sense,,,, i know how NDN is ,and seldom get things complete or correct,,,but i figured that even They couldnt screw this article up that badly,,,,,,,, thanks, i appreciate the information,:-) ,,, here its been proven that OUR hersay,is always better that Their "facts",,,,,

Bullbat, this home was well known to the fire crews arriving on scene after responding there multiple times for medical calls. It was common knowledge with the firefighters that this residence was home to the older woman and two small children. Although we were initially advised that there was no one left in the structure, there was a great deal of confusion where the children actually were. Because the whereabouts of the children was unknown the firefighters were in the process of searching the structure to make sure it was indeed empty when they were injured.

thanks Allaclarkbar,,,, that proves that reader heresay< WatchingoutinBonita #11> IS more factual than NDN,,,i hope the FF's heal fast, and return to work, real soon,,,,,,,it seems that there should be a system included to have an alert for homes, that are known to have elderly ,disabled, etc.that are medically attended to regularly,,,and a way to know if they are inside the home at the time of a fire,or other emergency, such as mandatory evac.,situations,etc..,, i know it sounds impossible, but ive always been of a mindset, that Nothing is impossible, they might take a bit more thought process,,, anyway,,thanks again, and as always prayers to those that need them most,,,,,,,,

"Johnston has been arrested over a dozen times in the past eight years, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Web site, and charged with a variety of crimes, ranging from possession of drugs, burglary, leading police on a chase and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon."
Do you really need this?

#14 Posted by AJMucha on September 19, 2008 at 11:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Agreed, AJMucha. The guy may have made some poor choices in his life, but he should made the right one when it was needed. The irony is that he may very well have had a case of the "maryjane munchies" that prompted that late evening stroll to McD's.

AJMucha, excellent post...this part of the "story" and other comments about anything but the heroic actions of Johnston need to be left out.

Our prayers go to all involved, the victim, the injured firefighters and to the gentleman who did not expect to be a hero. TGH has a fantastic burn unit. They will do all they can to give the best care to Mrs. Cardeno.

I agree that Johnston's past should be left out. Just because he's made some bad choices as a young adult doesn't mean he's a bad person, obviously he can make good choices too. As far as the firefighters that were injured yes I'm sorry they got hurt but if they would of been wearing there protective equipment issued to them they would not of gotten hurt. Yes the ceiling collapsed but if he would of been wearing his proper equipment the embers wouldn't of gone done the back of his t-shirt and burn him. Also for the other firefighter who was not wearing a mask caused him to get smoke inhalation.

naplesresident08

I work on a different shift from the injured FF, and had the chance to go talk to him at the hospital, which he explained what had happened. He was wearing the proper equipment(full bunker gear, nomex hood, Helmet, mask and air tank). When he got injured he was in the burning structure confirming no one was inside, since the children could not be initially located. He fell thru a weakened floor, which was caused from the recent flooding in the area. While trying to pull himself back out of the hole, a burning piece of roofing material got in between his helmet and his bunker gear. It was an unfortunate accident that occurred.

As far as the second firefighter, he instinctive reacted when the 1st firefighter was at the door screaming that he was hurt and tried to render immediate assistance to get him away from the structure. Anyone of us would have done the same thing, whether it was another firefighter or civilian. One of the things we learn is Risk Alot to Save ALot. not knowing what was wrong, it was a Risk worth taking.

Our many thanks to Mr Johnson for his heroic acts.

My thoughts and prayers to the firefighters who were injured. My hopes for your speedy recovery.

Thanks to all our fire fighters. :)

Next time let's leave out the irrelevant details about someone's arrest record?

I realize the writer was trying to justify the friend's quote about him making up for the bad he had done, but... it was certainly none of my business, and not an appropriate addition to the story.

Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
