NAPLES Collier County’s black community wants to unite to end the injustices in Collier.
And the African-American community is starting by supporting local bondswoman Juanita Williams, 51, calling on residents to rally to support her at an upcoming court hearing scheduled for Friday.
Inside a classroom at River Park Community Center in Naples, more than 30 black residents came together Saturday for an open discussion and forum about the current injustices occurring in Collier County -- and not just in the black community.
Williams, who has been charged in a Collier bail bond case, said she asked civil rights leaders to come to Naples to help those who have been treated unjustly learn about the laws and procedures.
The forum was hosted by the Naples branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the River Park Neighborhood Association and the National Action Network.
Tampa community activist Michell Williams, president of The Sons and Daughters of Harriet Tubman organization, spoke to the group about unity.
In the 21st century, Michell Williams said, the black community is still fighting a human rights war with Sheriff’s Offices and police departments, and with judges and housing authorities.
“We’ve got to stay together and maintain unity,” she said.
As the government works on a multibillion-dollar Wall Street bailout, Michell Williams urged the black community to spend its money only at businesses owned by blacks in the community in order to affect the current “white America.”
“Black is back and we are going to come stronger than ever,” said Michell Williams, who has been visiting Florida’s 67 counties. “If we don’t do it now, it’s going to be too late.”
In December 2007, Juanita Williams, who co-owns Express Bail Bonds and Liberty Bail Bonds with Joe Houston, was arrested on charges of permitting a felon to act as a bail bond agent and allowing someone to act as a bail bond agent without a license, both third-degree felonies.
She also was charged with soliciting business in jail, a first-degree misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of a year in jail.
Williams surrendered at the Sarasota County jail on Jan. 19 and is charged with failing to return bond collateral and two collateral security violations.
She still has her license suspended and hasn’t been able to work.
Activists who were gathered Saturday urged the group to unite and support Williams at 9 a.m. Friday at the courthouse, the day of her next court hearing in East Naples.
“We have to become unified,” Michell Williams said.
Juanita Williams, a member of National Action Network, said she hopes people who believe they have been treated unjustly -- as she contends she has -- know that there is help available for them.
Among those attending Saturday’s gathering was Tonge Lawson, of Naples.
“I’m just glad that she is here to bring awareness to the problems and circumstances in Collier County,” Lawson said.
Lawson said she hopes awareness is brought to the entire community and people realize that they, too, including illegal residents, can ask for help.

Wow, I wonder what the reaction would be if someone said "only spend your money on white buisness?" Racism is racism. The sons and dughters of Harriet Tubman = black kkk. Sorry Michell but your 30 supporters economic boycott wont be noticed.

The things she is charged with are violations of Florida Law. Not because she is black, because it is the law. If you break the law you pay. I was just reading about Kwanza, because they are stuffing it down my kids throat in school, and funny thing it didnt say anything about this type of unity.

Juanita, best of luck... It's about time someone has the courage to shake this town up!!! I think what happened to you and Joe stinks. I just wish the white people would get something shakin in this town for all the injustice they have had by the CCSO. Maybe then Naples will be a paradise again and not this crazy crap that goes on here!! Express Bails Bonds has been here along time and I hope your business gets better. I think you should have called Big Al and Jess , everyone knows they make sure they are heard .

As soon as they get caught doing something wrong they scream racist.

Black racism in Naples. Shocking...NOT!!!
Imagine if some white guy said..."Michell Williams urged the WHITE community to spend its money only at businesses owned by WHITES in the community in order to affect the current “BLACK America.”
You would have people going ape. Then again NDN wouldn't even print it out for fear of being painted as anti-black. And NDN wonders why they have a low subscription rate? I will only view it online or rap mullet with it.

We'll just see about that, again these people who are doing wrong will be uncovered! Who the hell believes everything they read anymore except people who aren't open minded to wait for the out come. Now I didn't see anyone printing in the paper that the majority of the other cases againt her were dropped because they were lies.
Face it, the "Good 'Ole Boy Network" is still alive and well and just you wait and see what is about to happen. I'm tired of being sick and tired and if your calling the group a racist so be it as it may but just know I'm about to uncover all this dirt in the county of Collier County.
Florida is the nastiest state in the nation and when you all realize what has been happening to my people and still happening then you'll see why we must get involved. 30 people wasn't anything just wait until thousands show up and show this town that we will not tolerate these injustices any longer!
Now get over it! I'M GETTING MY PEOPLE ORGANIZED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey CITYGIRL,
Not only the black citizens but the white ones as well are treated unfairly. Just look at the deputy getting his car towed. Sepanski's wife being intimidated by 20 other officers. Sounds like to me there are to many officers on the payroll. But then again we have a low crime rate,of course we do, everybody is locked up.

Activist,
I am/was a supporter of Obama. If this is what Obama stands for, I may have to unfortunately switch my vote to the Republican side. I will have to go to Obama's campain office with your comments and the comments of your followers to get some answers. I believe you are totally off base.

Ouch just cut my finger and guess what? Yup it was still red blood in there and, it appears Activist and I and most of you still in live in Florida. Guess that means we are ALL Floridians, ALL bleed red, and are ALL fighting some kind of battle. So there is NO MY PEOPLE. We are each unique individuals who should find the good in each other not put up a dividing wall like that person or the groups who would tell others "there people" deserve a different set of rules nor to ignore the economy of the entire community so as to single out people by color. Remember "divided we fall". Hate breeds hate Activist.

Activist: You continue on with your 1969 "Save my people" speech. Most do not care
This woman has charges of permitting a felon to act as a bail bond agent and allowing someone to act as a bail bond agent without a license, both third-degree felonies.
But you want to scream "injustice" this is why people look down upon what you want to do. she should not be treated any better than anyone else charged with the same.
If she was not let into a school or something because of her color thats Injustice and I would stand with you.
But she is charged with a crime and if shes found guilty I say let her do the time.

Michell Williams urged the black community to spend its money only at businesses owned by blacks in the community in order to affect the current “white America.”
So if that is the attitude of these close minded people, if they want to use their economic power to protest, Then because I disagree with them you can now believe that we will respond likewise.
Now in protest of William's view I am calling for an economic boycott of all black businesses.

You idiotic stupid BLACK SUPREMIST. You are the small minded ones! Get over it, you now have more rights than whites. You want to preach equality, but you lean on the “Ole poor is me” in hopes that you march into a place expecting to get a job BECAUSE YOU ARE BLACK.
Whites are now the majority and have been for decades. You get accepted at colleges easier than I and my offspring. You get grants for housing, you have habitat for humanity, you get welfare, etc., etc., etc.
You want to start a march, more power to you!
I SAY IT’S TIME FOR…
EQUAL RIGHTS FOR AMERICAN WHITES.
I am a 5th generation Floridian and my family built this state, and we had slaves, but that was a hundred years ago.
Aren’t we all slaves? If not it would really be a free country and none of us would have to work. And if Florida is so freakin’ bad get the hell out!!!! My family was here before you and we will be here after you.
I now use the paper as a fire starter, take that any way you want.

"where are Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton when you need them?"
LOL, counting their extortion money and laughing at the Naivity of BOTH the Black and White communities.
Fortunately, many Black leaders and businessmen and a few Black politicians have seen through their fraud and puffery and are advocating self reliance and standing on your own two feet.
Radical, liberal pols are still too interested in milking the weak and the guilt ridden "neo-libs" to really do anything positive about the advancement of real social and economic integration.

#12 thank you for being the political correctness watch dog online. You do have a point in PC ville. My mistake. So, with that being said...(see #9)
I didn't mean anything by it...so lets change the word "ape" to "out of their minds". I wanted to say going ape "feces" (profane word), but I can't say that online either since the new rules about profanity.
So, lets change the sentence to "You would have people going out of their minds". I hope this doesn't offend psychotic people or their families...that might be politically incorrect as well, and that is by far the worst thing a white guy can do...offend people :-)
But, you can bash white people all day long and their is nothing done about it. Double standard? Inequity between races? Whites are discriminated against on a daily basis too. The most racist people I have met in my life are black...I'm sorry to say.
Notice there are a ton of whites voting for Obama but, few blacks are voting for McCain? 95% of blacks are voting for Obama, but that's not racist in any way...right? If you believe that you are in denial.

This is a typical tactic of somoeone who got arrested and charged with a crime who happens to be black. If you don't have a good enough argument to refute the charges, deflect the undeniable truth and arguments by charging racism. It's just a way to justify your criminal behavior. It's much easier than taking responsibility for yourself.

I guess racial equality has been taken care of in the inner cities so now it is time to get Naples on track and take care of all those mean, white, racist bullies. Count me in!
I bet people like Jackson and Sharpton sit back every night in their mansions laughing at how they have the black community hoodwinked.
Do you really think they care about blacks? Has anybody ever asked where they draw their salaries from? Stop kidding yourselves people.
These two guys would be out of business if some of you stopped considering yourselves as "victims".
Racial equality to them is a business to make money and not a cause when Martin Luther King was around.
Some of you need to stop playing the "I am a victim because of my race" card and realize every time something bad happens to a minority it is not because of race.
Plenty of white people get arrested every day too if that makes some feel better.
Oh and by the way where is Jackson and Sharpton lately? Perhaps the Obama campaign wants us to forget about them until after the election. Just an observation.

I meant racism still alive, many don't see blacks as humans let alone as Americans.
#28 Posted by jagv05652 on September 28, 2008 at 1:57 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I can care less about Obama or McCain however my main corncern is to remain focused on the racism that has still plagued the black community. I welcome all your comments it keeps me on guard of the real real racist around me. Now like I've said I will continue to get my people organized in all races!
Now we can do this together and demand that we have racial harmony IF not I'm prepared to bring it back old school and finish what Malcom X and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., started.
Now until we all come together and stand up for all races not just the blacks we're going to continue to have that GOOD OLD BOY NETWORK in place. I use to think that blacks were the only target but we aren't it happens to whites also and until we uncover the deceit of these crooks we're doomed!
There is no political party that can help us out of the mess we're in but us. Now as far as us withdrawing our money from this economy trust me blacks spend more in this economy yearly than any other race. It's a fact do your homework, we have enough power to cripple this economy, we all do. The only way that these crooked people will keep doing this is because we allow them.
I'LL BE BACK IN NAPELS ON FRIDAY COME SIT AND TALK WITH ME BEFORE YOU JUDGE WHAT I'M DOING........

There are racist in law enforcement(Arpaio),in the media(Hannity,Rush,Dobbs) in politics(Tancredo,King,Sesembrenner, etc racism is not go away in such a short time from the 60'to now,of course now got to be more discrete, can't arrest non white people and beat them up without consequences,(almost happened with Rodney King)and once in a while some blacks get overkill by law enforcement with 20 or more shoots, when was the last time than we read about a white being shoot more than 20 times by cops?? nor a politician can block the entry to a school like George Wallace did without face harsh criticism,of course many politicians don't acknowledge what they are (with the exception of the "repented white supremacist""senator Byrd' because it would be harder to survive politically but their actions say more than words.

Jag - So in your liberal world when someone has an opinion different than yours you classify them as a racist? Is that how it works?
Again, please give me an example of something said or an action taken so you can prove your point. Post a link, a credible news source, or something of a FACTUAL nature that would lead you to believe the people you have mentioned are racists. An opinion is one thing but facts are another. I would like to see where you get your information from.
Oh and by the way The Daily Kos, the Huffington Post and MSNBC are not credible sources. So far you have posted six nonsense blogs with no facts just your anger.

And big deal if he had money put in his account, or a 3 way phone call allowed by Express. I can tell you as a fact many bail bonds companies do the same exact thing, yet I dont see them getting in trouble for it. This has been going on long enough with this crap going on against Express Bail Bonds. I give Juanita alot of credit for calling in a civil rights group, good for her! Hopefully after this chapter it will end all the DRAMA against her and the company, and she should get her liscense back. this is just crazy, how long has this saga been going on w/ them, seems forever. You go Juanita! Not sure I think there was "injustice" in this instance. It is possible, but when someone violates a law or appears to do so, they need to be arrested. But if someone can come along and end injustice (FOR ALL even Caucasians and original/native Americans, etc.) I am thrilled. C'mon down.
However, this is not a probable outcome to this invitation. Man's (woman's too) injustice to mankind is unfortunately something with which we will always struggle. We do need to keep trying to be fair and even handed when dealing with each other.

If this happened up North it wouldnt even make the paper. Why should she have anything to do with what someone in jail is saying? So he said he worked as a bailsman, he apparently dealt with Express Bail Bonds before and simply told people to use them, okay so he lied a bit, that has nothing to do with her. If a person wants to help a person out that is in jail by putting money or making sure they get their honey buns big deal, there isnt a law stating that if you work for a bonds company you are not allowed to put money in a persons account. It's simple the other companies just arent doing the business they are and they are jealous.

We can all agree that rascism is alive all over the world. Everywhere. Now it does not exist in everybody, but throughout every society it has existed since the beginning of time. Black rascism and white rascism. Rascism concerning Hispanics, Jews, Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists. It does not matter what group you belong to, somebody out there hates you simply because you belong to it.
Now, can citygirl, activist and jag please tell us all where in the world the black man has EVER had the opportunities to become successful as exists here in the United States of America. There has never been a country as willing to help, to encourage as well as help to finance that journey to success as this great and free country. The opportunity is there, and it's a shame so many would just prefer to not take it and blame everythng else in society for their failures to be successful. The failure was in not trying.
#53 Posted by D_IIIII on September 28, 2008 at 4:28 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Jag...ever hear of Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr.? Oh yeah, he's the racist preacher that your friend Obama went to listen to every Sunday for like the past 20 years.
BTW...did you know that the Republican Party was founded by anti-slavery activists, in contrast to the pro-slavery Democratic Party. It was Abe Lincoln, a Republican President, who led the North to victory in the Civil War and freed the slaves while the Democrats did everything in their power to keep black Americans down. Did you know that 82% of Republicans voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 versus only 64% of Democrats? Here's the reality: there are racists in both parties. But, there are a lot more of them in the Democratic Party and there always have been. But ironically, Democrats have managed to use the GOP's belief in a colorblind America against Republicans. Because so many Democrats have no problem with using racial discrimination for political purposes, they'll support policies like reparations, Affirmative Action, and racial quotas that Republicans simply won't.
Citygirl...you left out an important detail out of your last post. I'm sure the inmates were just sharing their positive experiences with this particular bail bond company with the other inmates however they were (allegedly) receiving funds from said bond company employees for doing so.
Please, get off the "I was arrested because I was black" bandwagon. It sounds ridiculous and pathetic.

Seems to me that many have espoused that belief, in spite of the total lack of logic in it.

"George Corley Wallace Jr. (August 25, 1919 – September 13, 1998), was a Democratic Governor of Alabama for four terms (1963-1967, 1971-1979 and 1983-1987) and ran for U.S. President seven times, running as a Democrat in four times and in the Independent Party three times. He is best known for his pro-segregation attitudes and as a symbol of states' rights during the American desegregation period, which he modified later in life."
The above is an excerpt from Wikepedia when I searched for the party affiliation for George Wallace. Although not a scholarly reference, in comparing the information to 8 other websites it appeared to be accurate and suprisingly well written. Hope that answers your question.

It's sad that it takes a situation like this to make certain indiviuals (and you know who you are) show your true color - yellow. Whether you agree or disagree with what is written within ANY article, which is your right - you choose to use it as an opportunity to verbally degrade and humiliate an indivual or group of individuals, while you being the coward that you are, hide behind a screen name. You probably work beside, pretend to be friends with, and even have lunch with the same type of people that you degrade. One should always consider the next persons feelings - sometimes a person can be "mentally" standing on the edge of a cliff, and your opinion alone - could push them over. No one's life has been perfect, some actions revealed - others covered up or pushed under the carpet by money or power - by ALL races. I've seen the above stated comments about blacks not trying to help themselves. Sadly, this is true, but not with just the black race but with "all races". If Ms. Williams or any other individual (black, white, hispanic, asian, etc.) who feels that they are not being treated fairly by "the system" or whomever, can you (in your heart) at least give them an ounce of credit for attempting to help themselves? Trouble can appear in anyone's life whether is be personal, family members, or friends, at any time. When and if this ever happens, I pray that people are more sensitive to you and yours.

That this could be said out loud and it is ok is really unbelievable! If we were to say the same as a white community the out cry whould be louder than ever!. The things that go on in the riverpark community would never be aloud in other communities. I am so tired of people that want something for nothing and take, take, take .People that think the law does not apply to them. I don't care what color you are, get a life and stop relying on the goverment to take care of you !

Evidently this woman thinks just because she is black and a minority she is exempt the current laws.

I think we've heard the last of Jag on this issue. It's tough to make any valid points when you obviously have no idea what you are talking about.
That's too bad. It was amusing to say the least. Sad at the same time.
I'd still love to hear an answer to my post #59. I had asked Jag, citygirl or activist. All three had been posting until the post. They seemed to have disappeared. Somebody must be giving something away for free.

So Hannity is a racist because he's friends with Turner?
So that means Obama is a racist because he's friends with Wright.
Glad we agree.

A black "civil rights" person complaining about "whitey" keeping them down!! What a surprise!! You are going to get a Black President come November!! What else do you want! lol injustice?
Black America, get your act together and stop blaming your problems on white people and teach your kids the value of a good education and job. Problem solved.

City girl,
I agree,everybody should stand up.
This garbage has been going on for too long! Too many people being charged with bs charges. its about time the s.a.o. steps up to the plate and tells the ccso to stop charging people with false cahrges only to have them dropped and waste everyone time and money.

#73...good point. If Obama wins (God help us), then I would like to see "affirmative action", AKA "reverse discrimination", removed from the law books.
There is no good reason for the law anymore. We do not live in the 1960's anymore. There are black millionaires and even billionaires. There are blacks running companies, in the Supreme Court, State Dept, House, Senate, Gov's mansions,...and on and on.
The "black victim" card doesn't work with me and a lot of other whites anymore. Go to college, join the military...what ever it takes...stop making excuses about slavery etc. There hasn't been slavery in this country since 1865!!! No one alive was a slave nor were they slave owners.
You should get a job based on MERIT and not race. That goes for blacks, whites and all others. That would be "equal"...right? I have been discrimnated against for getting jobs and promotions. It was wrong in the 1950's against blacks and it's wrong now against whites. Of course you can't be a "victim" of anything if you are white....correct? I just drove on and overcame...you guys should try it sometime instead of whinning about being "black"...try being an American!!! This hyphenated American stuff is for the birds..."African-American"? Give me a break...try "American"...who happens to be black. That's a big difference...American FIRST and race second in their hearts and minds.
Ok...I hope this didn't offend the Political Correctness types out there. PC is a really bad policy and thought control. Bad news for this country as is moral relativism...but that's another story all together. LOL. God Bless.

#50 TS is probably right, but 99.9% of people arrested don't have a race rally. Who knows, maybe there is injustice here. Sure wouldn't be the first time. The impression to what I've read in past news articles is that this bail company habitually skirts the rules and somebody finally took them down. Cultural clashes? I'm surprised at the vitriol.

I believe in freedom of speech, so shoot me! Truth always benefits people in society. Harriet Tubman said she could have freed more slaves (with her underground railroad) if they only knew that they were slaves. Naples is a really nice place. I grew up in NY and lived in SC for 13 years. Left NY because it was just ridiculous with drugs and taxes (sorry NY, God I miss ya, definitely nowhere like it!) I'm always surprised that drugs are everywhere - people want to help black people, or all people, I would definitely start with eradicating drugs from our streets and our homes. As a mother of a mixed child, I would note just a couple of things I've construed as racist since I've been here. Again, just facts. Stores watch you more closely if you're black or with some one of color (such as when I'm with my child, or when she's alone). School personnel questioned my child without me present because she had a bruise from falling - asked her all about her father, when she saw him, and who we live with. I just don't know if it would have happened if she was white. But you know what I told the school? Basically, knock yourself out, because I wish more people were concerned about the welfare of children and were actively finding out how things are going for kids. One thing I thought intolerable was when school office staff at North Naples Middle were completely unconcerned when my child and other Haitian children were being called gorillas (on 3 or 4 different occassions I told some one in the office, with no meaningful response except something like "Well, what do you want us to do?", no call back or any follow up that I was aware of, I asked only that the kids get some multicultural information). Also, I don't even know what this means, but kids on my child's bus now call hispanic children "beeeeners" - I had to mispell it because the Naplesnews posting program changed it to "people of Hispanic origin" - it sounds derogratory to me - don't know for sure. I told my child that it must be a derogatory term because it just couldn't be good - I've never heard it before. These are the only things I've noticed here in a year. I like the low crime and the beautiful city. We will probably stay because it really wasn't as disheartening as living with reverse racism in SC. If we leave here, I'm looking to a cabin in the Georgia Mountains. Peace

As a christian I believe that we are all equal no matter what the race, religion, ethnicity, sex... we are all God's people. I believe that Juanita Williams was treated unfairly. I know her on a personal level and feel that she is a wonderful person. I will not point the blame on anyone and I feel that all things happen for a reason. This injustice has called a wakeup call to all African Americans that racism still exist. She is too good of a person to deserve this mess. I believe that God is watching and he will prevail the injustice.
God bless all who read this and hopefully we can get some supporters to help oppose this mess!
