Sheila’s Out Shopping: Turkey trot
Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008
The holidays are approaching at record speed, so it’s time to start shopping for Thanksgiving. My first purchase is always the tin foil roasting pan ($1) from the Dollar Store. It makes cleanup so fast I don’t mind cooking the turkey. Full story »
Window Shopping: Maus & Hoffman
Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008
Open the door to Maus & Hoffman and you feel as if you have stepped back to a time when the customer was treated with deference and was, in all matters, absolutely right. It’s the kind of place that feels familiar, like you’ve shopped there all your life. Or seen the store in the background of a movie, maybe an old British film with a dapper Ronald Coleman or Trevor Howard. Full story »
Sheila’s Out Shopping: Swing designs
Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008
I am not a golfer, but I like comfortable clothing that has a fashion sense. I stopped into the new Bobby Jones store on Third Street South and was quite taken with the designs, materials and the story of Jones himself. The store sells country club sportswear that looks good on and off the course. Full story »
Sheila’s Out Shopping: The simple life
Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008
As I get older, I’m trying to simplify my life. I’ve downsizing the number of cosmetics and other products I use, gotten a wash-and-wear haircut and tried to find a neutral handbag to match all my clothing. I’m not lazy, but I spend my time doing things rather than fussing over myself. Full story »
Sheila’s Out Shopping: Light up my life
Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008
I visited the Gulf Coast Candle Shop on Vanderbilt Beach Road (across from Tiburon) to buy a house gift and got so involved I had a hard time leaving. Owners Carol and Fred Cuthbertson know so much about candle making, their vendors and inventory, I was totally engrossed. Full story »
Sheila’s Out Shopping: After school special
Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008
I admit that I don’t have kids at home anymore, but the beginning of the school year always brings back memories — including the ones about trying to make sure my daughters were well-occupied after school. Full story »
Sheila's Out Shopping: From schoolgirl to sex kitten
Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008
It seems like I’ve always loved the penny loafer. Everyone else wore saddle shoes, but there was something special about the slip ons. And even at 7 years old, I knew I had to have a pair. Every year I got one pair of school shoes, so I begged and pleaded for months until my mother finally relented. Full story »
Sheila’s Out Shopping: Just do it
Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008
The coming of Fay made this a tension-filled week. I had to shop for extra batteries, water and food as well as secure my house. Work was on overload to get everything done in case it turned out to be a very serious storm. Full story »
Sheila’s Out Shopping: Smooth as silk
Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008
I’ve noticed more and more smoothie establishments opening in our area lately. They have the consistency of milk shakes, but can also be a health tonic or breakfast food to start your day right. Blend berries, fruits and other good tasting foods for kids that don’t like to eat, and they will never know they are having something healthy. Full story »
Sheila’s Out Shopping: Steam heat
Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008
I usually take two suitcases when I travel, but to save the newly imposed luggage fees I packed everything into one on my last trip. Unfortunately, things got squished and my clothes were wrinkled when I reached my destination. I decided I needed a good travel iron or steamer to help me out of my dilemma. A few stores had some good alternatives. Full story »
Sheila’s Out Shopping: Getting sauced
Thursday, July 31, 2008
I was browsing the shelves at Wynn’s Market and was surprised to find spaghetti sauces from some of my favorite New York restaurants. I usually make my own sauce using Rao’s co-owner Frank Pellegrino’s family recipe, but was thrilled to find bottled sauces from Rao’s, Patsy’s and Vincent’s. I also found one from a restaurant in Fort Lauderdale that looks very good. Full story »
Sheila’s Out Shopping: Bright is right
Thursday, July 24, 2008
It’s summer and the living is easy, and the colors are bright, brighter and brightest. The brightest being neon. Yes, glow in the dark colors that will brighten the dullest day and mood are making a resurgence from the ’80’s. Full story »
Sheila’s Out Shopping: Shopping spree
Thursday, July 17, 2008
I heard so much about the renovation and addition at Saks Fifth Avenue, I couldn’t wait to see the new look for myself. I knew the jewelry, cosmetics, ladies shoes and men’s departments would be larger and revamped, but I didn’t realize how terrific the new space would become. Full story »
THE SAVVY SHOPPER
Friday, July 11, 2008
We were going to dinner at La Fontenella this week and we wandered past this shop in the strip mall at Pelican Landing. In the window was the most exquisite mirror I have seen, so I had to go back during store hours to find out about it.
