Appeals court: State can bar Allstate

Allstate Companies can be suspended by the state from writing new car insurance policies and other coverage for not turning over documents to the satisfaction of regulators, an appeals court ruled Wednesday. The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation had suspended Allstate from writing policies in January because the company hadn't turned over records to the office's satisfaction, but the company was allowed to continue writing policies while it appealed. On Wednesday a three-judge panel of the 1st District Court of Appeal said the state could re-institute the suspension.

Suspect in custody as Florida wildfires burn

Authorities arrested a man seen sparking a small blaze early Wednesday in a town where wildfires have gutted of homes and scorched thousands of acres. Officials were waiting to question Brian Crowder, 31, about the wildfires that have found ample fuel in developments on Florida's Atlantic coast where the state has not held controlled burns to cut back vegetation. Wildfires continue rampage; 34 miles of I-95 closed

Relentless wildfires burned into the early morning Tuesday across Florida's Atlantic coast, taxing firefighters and overwhelming residents trying to save their homes with garden hoses. Thirty four miles of Interstate 95 from Vero Beach to Melbourne have been closed, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Full story »

Florida rated a C-plus for difficulty on reading and math tests used to meet requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act last year, a study released Monday showed.
