WASIM AHMAD

Wasim "Wesley" Ahmad graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English from Binghamton University in Binghamton, N.Y., in 2004. After a year working as a copy editor and columnist in St. Cloud, Minn., he returned to Binghamton, where he was later promoted to the newsroom’s first Online Content Producer.

Wasim was an integral part of the Binghamton Press and Sun-Bulletin team that won the "Best of Gannett" award for breaking news coverage of major flooding in central New York in 2006. During the flood, more than 3 million hits were registered on the site, and Wasim helped coordinate all newsroom coverage online. It was a week of very little sleep. While initially during his high school and college journalism days he wanted to be a writer, it was the flood and its aftermath that propelled him into online journalism.

Wasim has spent his time since honing his online skills and training other journalists in online journalism and video.

He has been in Naples since February 2007 as a multimedia editor for the Daily News, where he has shot video and posted content for the newspaper’s Web site and Studio 55 operations. You also may have heard him in some of the Daily News podcasts.

In addition to journalism, Wasim’s other passion is photography. He’s a member of photo clubs in Naples and Miami, and also co-organizes the Southwest Florida Photography Meetup, a Fort Myers-based photography group. If you see him and a large group of people with big cameras around town, feel free to join in the fun.

Florida Department of Transportation officials hastily decreased the speed limit to 50 mph from 60 mph on U.S. 41/Tamiami Trail between State Road 29 to the Miami-Dade County boundary. That stretch passes through National Park Service land. FDOT officials say speed was reduced because they plan to do construction there. This sign was seen just outside the Gannet Strand in Collier County.
