DON'T defend yourself. Most people naturally want to defend themselves, but a reaction from you is just what the harasser wants. They are "fishing" for someone to latch onto and harass.
Lurk (i.e., read messages and don't respond or post any) on newsgroups, message boards, mailing lists, chat rooms, etc. before "speaking" or posting messages.
Ego Surf. Put your first name and last name in quotes in a search engine such as Yahoo!, Google or Dogpile and see if there are any results regarding you. Better yet, use TracerLock to do it for you on a regular basis, and the service is free.
Never give your password to anyone, especially if someone sends you an IM. Your ISP will never ask you for your password while you are online or via email.
Don't provide your credit card number or other identifying information as proof of age to access or subscribe to a web site run by a company you are not familiar with.
Instruct children to never, ever give out personal information - their real name, address, or phone number online without your permission.
Be very cautious about putting any pictures of yourself or your children online anywhere, or allowing anyone else (relatives, schools, dance academies, sports associations) to publish any photos. Some stalkers become obsessed with an image. A random email address or screen name is simply much less attractive to most obsessive personalities than a photograph.

Stalking of any kind creates serious danger and trauma for its victims. Frequently, stalking or cyberstalking takes place as part of a continuum of other crimes of sexual violence or interpersonal violence.
Stalking is also used by perpetrators to harass and intimidate victims. Often stalking precedes kidnapping, homicide or sexual battery, so intervention and safety planning are essential for stalking victims.
TIPS TO PREVENT CYBERSTALKING
Always select a gender-neutral username for your e-mail address or for chat. DON'T pick something cute, such as "miskitty@someisp.com" or use your first name if it is obviously female. Since the majority of online victims are female, this is what harassers look for.
Keep your primary email address ONLY for people you know and trust.
Get a free email account and use that for all your other online activity.
DON'T fill out profiles! When you sign up for your email account, whether it's through your ISP (such as AOL or CompuServe), or a free one (such as Yahoo!), fill out as little information about yourself as possible.
DO block or ignore unwanted users. Whether you are in a chat room or using IM (Instant Message), you should always check out what options/preferences are available to you. Take advantage of the "Block all users except those on my buddy list" or add unwanted usernames to an Ignore list in chat. If anyone bothers you and won't go away, put them on block or ignore!

For those who failed to read the criminal law in Florida about cyberstalking the first two times I posted it, here again is the FL statute I used to file a criminal complaint against a poster, "GatorHater07," who I believe has been cyberstalking me for months now, as explained in my complaint above -- and since this is now the 3rd time I am posting this law on this thread, I hope that those failed to read it the first two times may finally read it now:

Florida Statute 784.048 defines cyberstalking as "engaging in a course of conduct to communicate, or to cause to be communicated, words, images, or language by or through the use of electronic mail or electronic communication, directed at a specific person, causing substantial emotional distress to that person and serving no legitimate purpose."

(7) While on this forum, I have repeatedly posted true facts about unlawful conduct by officials employed in this school district, and I believe this perpetrator's continuous false personal attacks against me are intended to discredit me as a witness and intimidate me from taking legal actions against those in this school district who have knowingly and willfully harmed me for a decade now.
(8) I have now retained a lawyer on the civil complaint I have against this school district, though I may not be able to afford to make it to trial as I am now losing my home again, trial against these uncaring ruthless b*stards thanks to those who remain employed in positions of authority at this school district and forced me to lose my home in this community, twice, while being unemployed by this school district, though I am a highly qualified teacher and more qualified than the current superintendent, who is there illegally, in my view.
(9) I would appreciate it if your agency would subpoena the Naples Daily News to find out who is this person engaging in cyber stalking against me and against no other persons on that forum. The poster's screen name is "GatorHater07."
(10) I want to press criminal charges against this person for the crime of syberstalking and will testify in court.
(11) The evidence of his crimes has sometimes been removed at my request by the Naples Daily News because it is so publicly humiliating to be called a drunk when I do not drink, a drug addict when I do not take any drugs whatsoedver, to have my qualifications as a teacher and a witness diminished, and again, these comments are made while the poster uses a personal first name to me and only to me. Such comments have included that I should "return to drinking bourbon" and "go back to taking your meds" and that where I went to school to become a teacher is a vocational school, and that I should thus apply for a job as a janitor because I am "still unemployed" aS a teacher. I believe I am unemployed because of illegal ahge discrimination and not because of the above false comments repeatedly and continuously publicly made against me by this perpetrator on this public forum.
(12) My contact information is below. Again, I am willing to testify in court, and while some of the evidence was removed at my request, there is still evidence of this conduct by this poster under his name in the 140 pages of his comments as kept by the Naples Daily News newspaper on their server. And, again, all these comments single me out with a personal name, and repeatedly falsely accuse me of drinking, taking drugs, and other statements having nothing to do with matters being dicussed; and are only made to discredit me and cause me emotional distress, which it does.

For those interested in learning how to file a complaint of cyber stalking against a criminal, here is what I wrote in the form to the FL Dept of Enforcement:
(1) I am a woman and a Florida certified teacher, and I reporting the crime of cyberstalking.
(2) I believe the person committing this crime against me is a male, though I do not know his real name. Specifically, my complaint is that is he knowingly and willfully committing this crime against me, and against no one else, by continuously engaging in the following unlawful conduct over the course of several months now,m and most recently this week:
(3) "communicating or to cause to be communicated, words, and language by or through the use of electronic communication, directed at a specific person, causing substantial emotional distress to that person and serving no legitimate purpose."
(4) He is currently engaged in a public relations campaign to pretend he had no idea he was committing a crime, when in fact he knew all along. I believe this to be true because I am the one and only person whom he singles out by a personal first name alongside my screen name, instead of just a anonymous screen name.
(5) The criminal conduct of this person is taking place on the Naples Daily News web site forum on various discussion threads.
(6) The perpetrator's criminal acts against me involve postings to me that have nothing to do with any matter being discussed by me or other posters, and are instead personal attacks, consisting of deliberately false statements, intended to cause me substantisl emotional distress and do cause such distress, and such false, personal attacks singling me out by a personal name on a public forum serve no legitimate or lawful purpose.
