Yes, heaven forbid we try to make their lives a little easier or give them a little morale boost while they fight. What a horrible idea.

On Program takes donated computers to help soldiers overseas stay in touch

Maybe some of our troops have been introduced to the world of instant messaging. I would love for mine to have a laptop so I could talk to him more frequently.

Letters take 2-6+ weeks to arrive whether they're sent from the US or overseas. Phone calls, if possible, are often preceded by hours of waiting in line. It's hard for me to hear through the static, crackling, screeching, bleeding lines, and echoes. But, for those who have never had to deal with deployment, I can tell you that to hear the voice of a loved one is heaven. And if you happen to miss their call it's devastating. That's right, devastating. You don't know when or if you'll talk to them again. Anyone who has experienced deployment also knows the gut-wrenching feeling when a loved one doesn't call you at an agreed upon time. Having a laptop means they could send an email or instant message to let family know they are ok. Yes they have computers over there but the wait time for a chance to use one is about the same for a phone and they definitely are NOT fast computers with fast connections.

Those needy kids of collier county, by the same argument of availability, have computers available to them at public libraries and school. I know, I'm a product of the collier county public school system and of the computer age. I seem to have gotten through it without owning my own laptop.

I honor Memorial Day and those who have and are currently serving this country. For those who consider it merely a day off of work, your time would be better spent at the office.

The love of my life proudly fights in the midst of the 'racket' while others sit comfortably typing away on their keyboards discounting what he does and why he does it. These kids who are considering joining the armed forces during this time have more grit than the cowards who hide behind signs and posters. I applaud them and regret that I wasn't there.

Our country is full of unpatriotic who do not sneer and point fingers at politicians then wonder why outsiders consider us weak... it's because we don't stand behind our nation. A nation cannot be strong if those who live in it do not value it.

And years ago it was BAN GERMAN SHEPHERDS and BAN DOBERMAN PINSCHERS. It's fad and will pass just like it did with GSDs and Dobermans. What's scary is how many dogs are labeled as 'pit bull' that are not actually American Pit Bull Terriers. Anyone remember the Presa Canario mixes that killed Diane Whipple in California? Breaking news said that two pit bulls mauled a woman. There is nothing pit bull about those dogs and anyone with even a basic idea of what a pit bull is (35-50lb athletic working dog) would see that in an instant. The fact is that a majority of people have no idea what an actual pit bull is...including those that own them. Just for fun play Find the Pit Bull: http://members.aol.com/radogz/find.html. Blind, ignorant hate is a deplorable trait no matter who it is directed towards.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
John Stuart Mills

Bulldogs are notorious for health problems that they develop later in life. They are prone to distichiasis, prolapse of the nictitans gland, entropion and ectropion, allergies, bacterial and fungal skin infections, hip dysplasia, susceptible to heat stroke, keratoconjunctivitis sicca, chronic ear infections... It goes on and on. Just because a puppy is healthy at 8 weeks doesn't mean that it is free of congenital defects and Bulldogs are especially prone and predisposed to a LOT of very expensive health conditions. As I said: If someone cannot afford the cost of the animal they cannot afford the proper healthcare of that animal. And why would a breeder take a deposit on a 12 week old puppy when, by state law, you can legally sell puppies and kittens as young (but not younger than) 8 weeks? You should never let people into your house you don't know and if that means taking the time to really talk and get to know your potential buyers BEFORE you agree to sell them a puppy then do it. She's lucky she didn't end up like the Yorkie guy in Ft Myers!

Plus, all puppies sold in the state of Florida have to be free of internal and external parasites, be up to date on all shots, be examined within a certain time period before the date of sale by a licensed veterinarian and have a state issued health certificate signed by that veterinarian. Umbilical hernias are genetic and the breeder would have had to pay for the corrective procedures anyway...after finding a vet who would sign off on the health certificate so she could sell the puppy. Florida has an excellent pet lemon law that many do not know about.

On Immokalee woman gets probation in theft of English Bulldogs

Why would someone who breeds Bulldogs and KNOWS how expensive their medical care alone is agree to sell a dog to someone who cannot afford the deposit? If someone can't afford to pay for the dog, how can they afford to pay for their health problems? And why offer them a 'cheaper' dog? Really great, responsible, and caring breeder you got there. Breeding dogs is about improving the overall quality...not making money.

Yeah, it's sad that someone would steal puppies to sell and the woman should get more than probation but anyone who shows even the slightest hesitation in a telephone interview about the cost of the dog shouldn't have even been considered a potential buyer and allowed in the house.

Maybe those who want to ban leaf blowers should get together with their neighbors and decide as a neighborhood to do their own lawn maintenance instead of relying on hiring a company to do it for them? Wouldn't that solve their problem? Or better yet, offer to maintain your neighbor's lawn for them and give back to your community since leaf blowers so negatively impact the 'quality of life'. When someone talks about 'quality of life' I envision Terry Schiavo...people not being able to get their beauty sleep is NOT the first thing that comes to mind. In fact, I was under the impression that all those without jobs in Naples were getting ready at 7 AM to get on the roads and drive slowly so as to make those of us going to work late! Silly me!
