All I know is that recently I have spent a significant amount of my planning time dusting my desk, the bookshelves, the countertops and the blinds in my classroom. I also have "fantastiked" all of my student desks twice to remove pencil marks....

Board members are elected by the people to do the will of the people (Gov.101). Abbott and Donovan in particular have not. The people will react by voting them out. Very simple. Local level officials are vulnerable to their constituency. As for the teachers, continue doing what you do best, talk the company line, then shut your doors, and do what is right for kids. It's been that way for time immemorial, and it isn't something that Mr. T and the girlies have the power to change. Again, simple. Supers come and go - but teachers persevere. It's their consistency that is important, not T.& co.

#25 I am a teacher and I agree wholeheartedly! I have always wanted my own kids to work for what they get - no giveaways! I will do my best to support all of my students without giving in to this policy.

The board needs to be receiving these opinions, not just the blogs. When their mailboxes overflow, they usually at least look at the policy in question. If they receive little to no direct communication they take it as a sign that things are hunky - dory! Teachers already have policies in place to allow students to make up classwork, homework and tests when necessary. One has to work hard (or should I say not work hard) in order to receive a zero. Bailout mentality comes to CCPS!!

Almost every teacher in the county receives a nomination. I always have. Out of the close to 2,000 there are about 100 - 200 that actually sit down to complete the paperwork. The initial "cull" is from the paperwork. Then the observation process begins.

Definitely Julie! I and my VERY extended family will be voting for her. She is reasoned and thoughtful with a core of steel when necessary. There has not been a board with a teacher on it since I can remember (30 or so years), and boards full of business people certainly have not gotten the job done to date!

If the referendum is voted down the capital funds will be spent anyway. Contracts for things like new football turf, remodeling that isn't necessary, etc. Don't think that admin will let the money sit so that it can go back to the state! Better that it's in the operational budget. Hold the board's feet to the fire. Keep the process public by attending all board meetings in spite of their efforts to keep people from them with their "committees"! Pack every board meeting and ask to speak. Then, ask the tough questions. At least their responses will be documented in the NDN or local TV news!

At my school every teacher was nominated (teachers can even nominate each other). Of the nominees countywide 40 are selected on the basis of a written application. To be selected for observation and the chance to be a Golden Apple teacher whaat you need to do is write well. Then those 40 are looked at more closely (12 or so observations). I have been nominated every year and have never bothered to fill out the application. Collier usually has ab0ut 2,000 teachers nominated, and about 200 (maybe) that fill out the application.
