naplesdad, ease up. Unless you were at the scene when the accident happened, you have no basis to make such a judgment. Instead, let's pray for everyone involved and be thankful we are not them or their family this holiday season.

It is unfortunate but predictable that certain elements would stoop this low. Nevertheless, change is in the air.

Neez, the rebuttal is staring you in the face. Circuit City has announced its shut down during and because of the current administrations' economic policies. Ditto for all other economic woes we are currently facing.

red ryder, you are all missing the point. Neither the story nor any of the comments have anything to do with someone "walking down the street". If you all insist on discussing the fly on the elephant, instead of the elephant itself, then all I can say is, "fly away".

Nuntius, read more carefully before you spout off. The comment from phat was that (s)he say nothing wrong with LEOs "finding" a reason to conduct the stop, in other words, make up a reason for a stop. That basic premise goes against our most basic law, which provides a check and balance on the use of authority. Mine was a brief comment on a fundamental aspect of our society -- as Thomas Paine said: "He that would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself." I'll leave the practice of criminal law to folks like you.

phat, the need for a reason, i.e., probable cause, is grounded in our constitution. Like our forefathers, I don't trust law enforcement or politicians enough to delegate all power and discretion to them. If you do, you then have to trust they will stop before "abuse of power" occurs. Remember the adage, "Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely". The way you think, "what's wrong with 'finding a reason'", is the path to fascism.

I am amazed at all the "holier than thous" here. The child here could well be mentally ill. There are many parents out there who deal daily with mentally ill children who are a challenge in every sense of the word. These children are loved regardless of the circumstances and if you had any sympathy, you would be praying for the parents and for the child and stop being so judgmental.
