Collier Spay Neuter Clinic

Become a part of the solution to help end the pet overpopulation crisis… Support our capital campaign to raise $35,000 to begin build-out of the spay/neuter clinic to commence January 1, 2009.

Collier Spay Neuter Clinic, (CSNC), is a local non-profit organization dedicated to providing a non-lethal solution to the pet overpopulation crisis. Each year approximately 6,000 animals in Collier County and 11,000 in Lee County are euthanized due to lack of available shelter space. Nationwide there are 5 million animals euthanized. By preventing the births, CSNC will be addressing the root of the problem of pet overpopulation and will save the lives of thousands of animals, while reducing risks to public health and saving local taxpayers millions of dollars.

Please make a tax-deductible contribution today of $500 that will help CSNC open as planned in March 2009. (All donors giving $500 or more will be recognized in the clinic lobby with a hand painted tile on our “Wall of Paws.”) If you can’t afford $500, your donation of only $100 will help us reach our goal.

We are also in need of a new or used (working) van to use as a transport vehicle.

For additional naming opportunities, corporate sponsorship and our complete wish list, or to make a donation online via credit card, please visit our website www.collierspayneuter.org.

Donations may be mailed to: 591 6th St NE, Naples, FL 34120. For more information please contact Pallas Diaz at 239.248.2635 or email info@collierspayneuter.org.

St. Matthew's House

St. Matthew’s House thanks the community for their ongoing support of our mission, now in its 20th year of housing the homeless, providing food for the needy and transforming lives. This is an unprecedented year of need in Collier County. Many are facing hardship for the first time due to job loss and home foreclosure. As a result, needs for the services provided by St. Matthew’s House have skyrocketed.

In response, we are hoping to expand our feeding and food pantry mission by becoming a food storehouse for Collier County. This will require a large walk-in freezer and cooler to stock the supplies given out to families in need as well as feeding the homeless and hungry daily at the Old Firehouse and serving meals to our 164 residents.

The St. Matthew’s House kitchen is also in need of:

Commercial-sized steamer
Commercial-sized can opener
Set of silver ware for 120
Set of 120 ceramic plates
24 new kitchen aprons

To supplement the estimated 5,200 bags of groceries given out per year, ongoing food pantry needs include coffee, sugar, peanut butter, jelly, spaghetti sauce, pasta, dry cereal, dried beans, canned fruits and vegetables & canned/dried soups.

Our Direct Assistance program is in need of diapers size 4-6 and baby wipes, as we serve families facing hardship during this holiday season.

Volunteers are also needed to work at our three thrift stores and other areas of our mission. Please call Kerri Plogher at 239-774-0500 to volunteer.

Please visit www.stmatthewshouse.org for a complete Needs list.

Alliance for the Advancement of Adult Stem Cell Therapy and Research, Inc.

The Alliance for the Advancement of Adult Stem Cell Therapy and Research, Inc. is a new non-profit entity. Our mission is to assist patients, research and to create awareness of Adult Stem Cell Therapy.

On the cutting edge of medical technology to prolong and improve the quality of life of patients affected by life-altering disease, Adult Stem Cell Therapy is safe, highly effective and has minimal risk.

There are top notch world re-known doctors who perform this medical procedure. The process is easy: standard blood draw from the patient, stem cell is sent to a lab to grow into new cells, which are then injected into the patient. Over time, re-growth and function occurs in the affected area. Patients have seen a dramatic improvement in heart and lung function, circulation, healing of wound and a decrease in diabetic ulcers and amputation rate.

We have many specific patient needs, for example: new prosthetics for Andre Lampkin, a 20 year old football player who contracted Meningitis and had Adult Stem Cell Therapy to help save his life. There is also a 28 year old man who has Cerebral Palsy and is hoping to receive Adult Stem Cell Therapy.

In this season of giving, we would appreciate the kindness and generosity of monetary donations. So, as you are preparing your year-end and or next year’s budgets/contributions, please consider us.

For more information and or to make a donation please contact Alexis Michel Angelo via e-mail aangelo@adultstemcell.org or via telephone at 495.5913.

First Book-Collier County

First Book-Collier County gives books to disadvantaged children in our community, for them to read, take home, and own. The number of books in the home is very closely linked to children's reading ability, yet over 80% of low income families have no books at all in their homes for their children.

Since our founding three years ago, First Book-Collier County has sought to address this problem by giving over 100,000 books to children living in poverty in our midst. The great generosity of this community has made this possible. This year we are giving over 8,000 disadvantaged children from pre-K through 4th grade a steady stream of books of their very own - to take home, read, and re-read, with parents, siblings, and friends.

Because of First Book National's partnerships with leading children's book publishers, we are able to obtain first-run, high quality books at a fraction of their retail price - often under $2.50. So our "wish" is for more funds to buy more great books for children at these great prices!

Family to Family

This is Family to Family's 8th year turning your "extra stuff" into incredible gift baskets for Foster Care & special needs families in our area. We are hoping for free passes for our community's children and those who step in and provide them a sense of home and family.

We'd like to give local families a day of happy memories and are in need of help to make that happen. Please help spread joy this season by filling empty spaces with deserving children. We need bus (CAT) passes along with movie, bowling, skating, theatre, boating, sports events, tourist attractions, Zoo, amusement and waterpark, etc.

We can also use (new or gently used) VCR's, CD & DVD players and video game systems.

This year we are helping over 90 families get through the holidays. Our gift baskets are made up of new and very gently used items. Donating is a great way to recycle, re-gift and redistribute your "extra stuff" directly to those who need and appreciate these things.

We also need people to take a basket to add to, then pass along, adopt a family basket or take a Breakroom basket to work for an office or business to fill .

Our deadline for donations is Dec. 17 for holiday distribution. We will however continue to accept gifts to pass on. All gifts go directly to local families.

Contact Fran Bratcher at 272-0743 or 352-8779- email: familytofamily@embarqmail.com

Your consideration is greatly appreciated.

Our educational services for children include a range of specialized services such as an early intervention childcare program for children with disabilities in an inclusive setting and the Florida Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten program. We also provide many in-school services such as Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, Behavioral Analysis, and Recreational Therapy as well as music and art programs.

In addition, our certified therapists offer outpatient services to meet the needs of many other families in the area. These programs help us to enrich the lives of many children in need with fun, educational activities in a safe, nurturing environment.

Step by Step is the only program of its kind in Collier County.

Currently, we are seeking donations of the following items: gift cards and gift certificates for our upcoming annual gala auction; paint and art supplies for our young children; toiletries, diapers and other items necessary to provide a quality child care setting; outdoor play items (trikes and riding toys); books and puzzles; clothing; CD players; early childhood computer games; and copy paper and general office supplies. In this economic environment, though, our greatest need is cash to fund scholarships for the growing number of children who need our services but for which their families are financially unable to do so.

We are currently moving our Post Home from Linwood Avenue to Tamiami Trail East in Naples. We will have a much larger facility including lots of outside space for picnics and activities to better support those in the community who depend on us.

Our community involvement includes participating in a variety of patriotic events throughout the year such as sponsoring the “Patriotic Moment” which takes place in the Sugden Plaza during season.

We awarded six $1000.00 scholarships to deserving community students each of the past three years. We provided part of the honor guard for the visit of “Traveling Vietnam Wall” while it was in Naples.

We provided both financial and membership support to the recent visit of “21 Wounded Warriors” to Naples.

All of this would not have happened without our supportive members and other community friends.

The Care Club of Collier County

The Care Club has been providing Adult Day Services to those who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease and other memory disorders for 16 years. Many of the families who utilize our services are unable to afford the cost of the program and rely upon our Scholarship Program that financially assists them with their needs. During this past year we have experienced a higher demand for assistance from the Scholarship Program. Many of the requests have come from working families who have been impacted by the current economic situation and they have found themselves in some very difficult financial circumstances, but they still require care for their loved ones. Donations to the Scholarship Program would be greatly appreciated and of great value to the Care Club.

We are also looking for volunteers who would like to share their time and talents with our clients. Volunteers are such an important part of our program because they help to make the days special for our clients. To learn more please contact Luanne Wahlstrom ot Mindy Johnson at 239-353-1994 or at www.careclub1@aol.com. You can also visit us on our website at www.colliercareclub.org. Parkinson Association of Southwest Florida, Inc. (PASFI)

The PASFI mission is “to promote quality of life for individuals with Parkinson disease and their care partners,” and the organization has been meeting that challenge by offering programs and services specific to Parkinson disease, free of charge for over 10 years.

In these economic times, community support for programs and services, such as exercise classes, speech therapy, adult day care, support groups and education programs is especially important.

Exercise classes help participants improve balance necessary to prevent falls, thus, keeping them out of hospitals and in their own homes. Speech therapy helps participants regain or maintain sufficient voice volume to be heard by others, as well as learn swallowing techniques that will help prevent choking and possible death. Adult day care allows care partners the opportunity to rest, take care of business appointments or attend social events, while knowing their loved one is happy and safe. Support group facilitators provide understanding, assistance and the resources needed to restore the care partner’s reserves. Education programs offer critical information about Parkinson disease, as well as an array of other topics necessary to help individuals manage their disease and retain quality of life. Just $52 pays for one exercise class, $84 one speech therapy class, or $64 for one day of adult day care.

Any donation (our wish) toward programs/services for individuals with Parkinson disease and their care partners of Southwest Florida will be greatly appreciated. Call 254-7791, or visit our website at www.pasfi.org.

Baby Basics of Collier County

The Humane Society Naples

This year, The Humane Society Naples will shatter its all-time record for adoptions with over 1,350 pets finding forever, loving homes! With each additional intake & adoption however, comes a need for support to help volunteers and staff provide the best shelter, care and love for the furry friends until they find a perfect home.

Their greatest current need is financial support for the shelter renovation and building project, set to commence in February 2009. The Humane Society Naples has currently raised over $1.6 million toward the $3.6 million project. Friends of the local, no-kill shelter can establish a permanent legacy for their family and pets by considering naming opportunities associated with the project that can be fulfilled with multi-year pledges of support. The Humane Society Naples would be honored to privately discuss ways that your family can get involved and help the many pets and people that will be served by the shelter for years to come.

The increase in pet adoptions has also created an increased need for day-to-day supplies used at the shelter. Critical items include:

Paper towels
Cat toys
Canned dog/cat food
Bleach
Hand Sanitizer
Office paper

Donations may be mailed or delivered to: 370 Airport-Pulling Road North, Naples, Florida 34104. For more information about making a gift to The Humane Society Naples, please contact Andy Reed at: (239) 643-1880 Ext. 21 or: andy@hsnaples.org or visit www.HSNaples.org.

Conservancy of Southwest Florida Wildlife Rehabilitation Center

The holiday season is upon us in Southwest Florida, and with it comes the influx of our neighbors coming back to enjoy the quality of life that Naples has to offer. As the population increases, and more cars return to the roads, our native wildlife suffers. We have all seen the tortoise who is to slow to cross the road, or the Osprey who has soared to close to the cars. The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (WRC) at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida treats over 2,400 injured animals annually- releasing almost half of them back into the wild. We have many volunteers, including some of Naples finest veterinarians, who dedicate a large part of their time to treat these animals. However, without the support of community members the WRC would be forced to close its doors. The WRC costs $250,000 annually to run and we receive no government funding. Some items needed this holiday season are:

Quality brand cat and dog foods of any size.
Gauze, cotton balls, Q-tips, Telfa pads and latex gloves.
600 ft. ¾” rope for use by our perching birds (sold @ ACE Hardware).
Bags of wild birdseed.
Gas cards in any amount (for when we rescue and release animals).
Large and medium size pet carriers.
Small and medium size leather work gloves.

We are truly appreciative of your consideration. For more information, please contact Joanna Fitzgerald Vaught, Wildlife Rehabilitation Center Manager at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida at (239) 403-4227, by email at JoannaF@conservancy.org or online at www.conservancy.org.

Sunrise [Community of Collier County]

Our first wish has got to be that the community continues to provide financial support so that adults with developmental disabilities have a place to go for an Adult Day Training program.

Our second wish is that we get volunteers to augment our advisory Board of Trustees. We look for persons who want to use their influence to find both fiscal and legislative support to ensure this program can afford to provide services in Collier County.

Third, we wish for persons or groups who would like to provide scholarships for individuals for whom the State has placed on multi-year waitlists for funding.

Fourth, we wish for persons or organizations to provide money for individuals to get bi-annual dental cleaning and annual x-rays to make up where the State of Florida cut this support for them in October.

Last, we wish that somebody’s financial plan will work and will bring employment to the un- and under employed and support for the State’s thousands of persons with special needs.

YMCA of the Palms

The YMCA offers children and families the chance to make positive choices: Quality child care opportunities mean parents can work to improve their quality of life. The YMCA of the Palms is finalizing renovations of what will be the new YMCA Gaynor Child Development Center and plans to open the center for 125 new students on January 5, 2009. In January, the YMCA will serve 271 children from 3 months to 5 years in its child care programs every day.

Over 50% of the children in the YMCA's child care program receive financial assistance and our holiday wish is that the YMCA can continue to meet the community need for quality child care and early childhood education. In addition, the YMCA is still looking to raise $900,000 in the $3.4 million capital campaign for the new Gaynor Child Development Center. Gifts to the capital campaign will be matched dollar for dollar by the Naples Children and Education Foundation. All gifts are greatly appreciated and go directly to children and families in need.

Catholic Charities of Collier County

Catholic Charities, Family Resource Center provides food, utilities and prescription assistance to individuals in need. In addition, we provide Holiday food baskets and Christmas gifts that benefit hundreds of families in our community. This year we have seen a dramatic increase in demand, approximately 60 Percent. There has also been an increase in middle-class families requesting assistance with Christmas gifts. These families are struggling to make ends meet and cannot afford to buy gifts for their children. Unfortunately, we cannot meet the needs of everyone. That is why it is so important that we reach out to the community so we can help those who need it most.

Please help Catholic Charities provide gifts to 150 needy children and help us keep our food pantry full for the holidays. We are in need of Wal-Mart gift cards for children’s Holiday presents. We are also in need of food pantry items such as peanut butter, jelly, pasta, canned soup and ravioli, tuna, macaroni and cheese and cereal.

If you would like to help our agency, please contact Allegra Belliard at 239-793-0059 ext. 112, or Dora Garcia at ext. 101, or email: allegra@catholiccharitiescc.org. It provides primary care and services in several specialties and is staffed by retired Physicians and Dentists who volunteer their service without compensation. The Center also provides an eye screening program, Flu vaccination program and other community outreach programs geared towards older adults. The Center operates largely on grants and donations and saw almost 3000 patient visits last year. As unemployment increases, the number of individuals requesting services increases. Neighborhood Health Clinic

This holiday message is to thank all our friends and neighbors who generously support the Neighborhood Health Clinic by caring deeply about those who are less fortunate.

No one is challenged more by this economy than our patients who are low income, working uninsured Collier County adults. We continue to see an increase in the number of patients seeking medical help and in the complexity of their illnesses.

Our patients must contribute one hour’s wage for their care. This year, we are asking everyone in Collier County to contribute one hour of their wage to the Neighborhood Health Clinic. Even for retirees, we hope you will find it in your heart to send something. Please know that no donation is too small and your gift may save someone’s life.

Every dollar helps us achieve our goal of providing a medical home with quality healthcare for the working poor of Collier County.

If you would like more information or to schedule a tour of our facility, please call Nina at 261-6600 extension 37 or Stephanie at 261-6600 extension 25. You can email nina@neighborhoodhealthclinic.org or sfoster@neighborhoodhealthclinic.org. Our address is 120 Goodlette Road North, Naples, FL 34102 and the website is www.neighborhoodhealthclinic.org.

Fun Time Early Childhood Academy

Fun Time is an early educational program that serves at risk, disadvantaged children ages 1-5 years old. We provide safe, affordable quality childcare and early education and we prepare the preschoolers for kindergarten ready for read and ready to learn. We are requesting books for our "Fun Time family lending library". We want to encourage the parents to take books home, read to the children, and return the books to program for continued use. We know that when parents read to their children, they are encouraging the children's listening, learning, and social skills. In addition important parent-child bonding is nurtured. Lending books to families is a way of saying " you are an important part of your child's school success and we want to support that journey today."

Thank you for your interest in assisting Fun Time in this important quest to provide a lending library for 1-5 year olds to our families.

Avow Hospice

Our staff and volunteers don’t get many thanks for their wonderful work, aside from their patients’ satisfaction with their care. Unfortunately, we’re suffering from today’s slow economy just like everyone else and have very limited funds to show our deep appreciation for those who work or volunteer for us. They mean the world to our hospice and our community, as they provide the most magnificent care to the dying and their families. On our wish list:

Thank you notes from the community
Gas cards
Gift cards to grocery stores or other retailers
Items we can raffle off to staff at the holidays
An appreciation event, e.g. a Bowling Bash ($1,000), a pizza party ($300) or a breakfast ($100)
Office supplies – need all kinds and plenty of them: paperclips, staples, copy paper, etc., etc.
Scholarship money for our staff to attend clinical workshops to keep their skills updated

Our Hospice House could also use some holiday cheer. Poinsettias for patient rooms and the staff work areas would be very much appreciated. The gardens at the House could also use new plants and flowers.

Please contact Kit Chamberlain at 430-3473 or kchamberlain@avowhospice.org for more information or to make your gift. Thank you, happy holidays and good health from all of us at Avow Hospice!

United Arts Council of Collier County

The United Arts Council is responsible for promoting the arts and ensuring that all residents have opportunities to enjoy the arts. Our passion is arts education for young people, especially for at-risk students in our public schools.

In addition to our arts education classes in after-school programs, we operate Tools 4 Schools, a Recycle Resource Center for supplies donated by the public for use in the classroom. With supply budgets dwindling, teachers in the arts are able to shop for free supplies for creative student projects. Donations may also go to promising students who can’t afford to buy art supplies or musical instruments for at-home use.

Our biggest need this year is for cash donations to offset the cost of operating the Recycle Center. Our “wish list” also includes donated supplies to restock the Center’s shelves. For visual arts classrooms we need: unopened artist paints, oils and pastels; used cameras (digital and 35mm); poster boards; papers; frames; fabric; general office supplies; easels; stickers; craft supplies. For the performing arts, we need: used musical instruments; sheet music; music CD’s; costumes and small theatre props.

If you are interested in volunteering in the arts, please give us a call – we have lots of opportunities!

The United Arts Council is located at 2335 Tamiami Trail North #504; hours vary so please call 263-8242 for more information or visit us on the web at www.collierarts.com. Email inquiries to: info@uaccollier.com.

The Education Foundation of Collier County - Invest in the Future of Students

Just as a parent or grandparent purchases savings bonds to help assure a child’s education, you can cultivate success for deserving students in Collier County.

The Education Foundation of Collier County’s Take Stock in Children program invests in economically disadvantaged students by providing mentors, enrichment activities and state matched college scholarships to prepare them for success. You can change the life of a child who may be the first in their family to go to college.

The Education Foundation has earned the highest 4-star rating for sound fiscal management from Charity Navigator. Invest in the future of Collier County – invest in education! Please visit EducationForCollier.org or call 643-4755 to make a contribution or get involved!

The Education Foundation of Collier County - Grant a Teacher’s Wish!

This is your opportunity to help a teacher bring experiences to students that they may not otherwise get by connecting with a classroom!

If science and math are your passion, you’d be very interested in the “Few and Far Between” project at East Naples Middle in which students will build their own planetary models to scale. “Rub a Dub Dub, Alphabet Tubs” will bring interactive opportunities to kindergarten students at Pinecrest Elementary to better associate sounds with letters. Each of these projects is less than $300!

During the holidays, instead of an office gift exchange, many groups choose a project they like, and take up a collection to help grant the wishes of teachers and students in their classrooms.

Please grant a teacher’s wish this holiday season through The Education Foundation of Collier County’s Connect with a Classroom program by visiting www.connectwithaclassroom.org, and click “invest in a student project” or call 643-4755.

Reach Out Everglades & C.O.P.S. Association, Inc.

The holiday season is upon us and we are all experiencing difficult times. Many of the local charities are experiencing a drastic reduction in donations also.

Reach Out Everglades & C.O.P.S. Association, Inc. serves the remote areas in southern Collier County, Florida, comprising Everglades City, Plantation Island, Chokoloskee, Copeland, Lee Cypress, Jerome, Deep Lake, and Ochopee.

The organization operates a Thrift Shop, Summer Camp, Food Pantry, and Neuter & Spay service. It is involved in many ad-hoc activities to help the community, especially those in the lower economic brackets.

Reach Out Everglades also helps families in crisis. The area relies on seasonal fishing and tourism so emergency financial aid is often needed during the lean times to meet household bills or to face unexpected expenses.

Currently the Organizations funds are depleted and there has been extremely low donations of toys for the children and gift cards for the teens...for this Christmas Season.

Please consider those less fortunate when you are out doing your holiday shopping. Even the smallest donation of money, toys and/or gift cards would be so greatly appreciated. WEB SITE: http://www.reachouteverglades.org/ CONTACT NAME: LuAnn Beebee CONTACT PHONE : (239) 695-1031

Empty Bowls

The Empty Bowls Event is Jan. 31, 2009, at Cambier Park. All proceeds from the event go to the Harry Chapin Food Bank which serves five counties in Southwest Florida. High school students create ceramic bowls for the public to purchase for $10. Then participants enjoy a bowl of soup donated by local restaurants. The event starts at 11a.m.

We have three wishes.

Our first wish for the event is for individuals and businesses to match the number of bowls that our teens make with $1. Last year we made 700 bowls; this year — at this time — we have made 739 bowls. If we can raise more funds, our total donation to the food bank could be larger.

Our second wish is for more potters to help with donation of bowls and pottery pieces for our silent auction.

Our third wish is for the community to attend on Jan. 31 and make a donation of $10.00.

Contact us at Barron Collier Potters Guild, 5600 Cougar Drive; Naples, 34109; 377-1387; or at torrando@collier.k12.fl.us

Immokalee Dance Students

I am a teacher at Lake Trafford school in Immokalee, working with an after-school program. I have 20 students who are learning how to dance in this program, and they are working on putting together a program to go and dance for the senior citizens at the local senior center — among other performances.

The 20 students are in need of jazz dance shoes and the money just isn’t available in our funds. I don’t want the students to get shin splints or take any chances on falling if they are dancing in socks. The shoes could prevent this from happening.

The lowest price I found for the shoes is $14.50 a pair online. With your assistance, our students would be able to put their best foot forward — no pun intended.

The students thank you for your consideration and time. Contact me, Christine Gray, at 377-7300 or graych@collier.k12.fl.us

The Lorenzo Walker Institute of Technology (LWIT) Foundation

LWIT is Naples’ hidden gem.

It has 600 adult students studying in 21 different technology areas ranging from nursing, dental and surgical technology, computers, aviation and auto mechanics and culinary arts.

The average age of the students is 27 and many of them are single parents striving to better themselves.

Upon graduation, some 70 percent of these students live and work in Collier County!

The Foundation Board of LWIT is a non-profit, 501(C)3 corporation. The raises scholarship funds for the school’s needy students.

By your giving scholarship funds to the Foundation Board, you are fostering three winning situations.

First, your scholarship funds are giving needy students a hand up in helping them learn a new technical vocation and in improving theirs and their family’s life.

Second, thousands of these LWIT graduates comprise the technical infrastructure that keeps our community vibrant and growing.

Third, these technical graduates support almost every service you personally need or use in Collier County, and your contributions are tax-deductible.

Please consider a personal donation to the Lorenzo Walker Institute of Technology Foundation Board for scholarships to needy students! Or, as a member of a social or professional organization, you can encourage members to contribute a scholarship in your organization’s name, as did the Porsche Club of Collier County.

The Naples E.T. Brisson Detachment of the Marine Corps League is conducting the annual Toys for Tots drive. This program is a U.S. Marine Corps community outreach program.

We collect new, unwrapped toys to give to children up to 16 years old. Families have been pre-registered, and they will receive gifts on Dec. 20. As of this date, we are no longer taking further registrations.

With registration complete and toys being received, we see that we will be extremely short of toys in the 10-year-and-up age group — girls and boys.

If you would like to help, please provide a new, unwrapped toy for children in this age group. If you prefer to give toys in another age group that will help too. Gift cards are also accepted if you would like to donate them, and we will turn it into a toy.

There are drop-off locations all around Collier County. If you cannot find a toy drop-off location or you have a bunch of toys to donate, call Mike Trephan of the Marine Corps League of Naples at 455-4726.

Collier County Freedom Memorial

Our project will pay tribute to the law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel and civilians who died in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and will serve as an important reminder of the sacrifices — past and present — that have been made by our military men and women protecting us during times of peril. The memorial is a unique project that reflects and symbolizes the values that make our community a truly special place to live.

The granite, stone and water memorial will be 13 feet tall and 40 feet wide in the shape of the American flag anchored on a granite base in the shape of the United States and will be located at Freedom Park at the intersection of Golden Gate Parkway and Goodlette-Frank Road. The monument will also feature a waterfall flowing on one end and will sit on 50 stones representing each state.

Behind the memorial, three benches will be placed before a reflection pool to represent the three attacks — Twin Towers, the Pentagon and United Flight 93 — that occurred on 9/11.

Construction of the memorial is scheduled to begin in the near future, thanks to the generous contributions made thus far.

However, additional donations are needed to complete the memorial. Please consider making a donation in support of this community project and join us as we build a permanent memorial to honor our nation’s heroes.

You can make a donation online by visiting www.CollierRemembers.org or call 254-3169 for additional information.

21st Century CARE

Every year, 800,000 Americans are diagnosed with cancer. Every year more and more Americans are beating the disease. That is the good news.

The bad news is there are many people who simply cannot afford the out-of-pocket expenses related to the treatment they need.

21st Century CARE (Cancer Assistance, Research & Education) is a not-for-profit foundation designed to provide cancer patients with immediate financial assistance for incidental expenses related to active cancer treatment. This allows patients to put their focus where it belongs — on beating the disease.

21st Century CARE’s goal is to help ease that financial burden for items not covered by an insurance plan. We do not cover co-pays or prescription drugs. For qualified patients, we provide transportation to and from cancer treatment, airfare, lodging and meals for specialized cancer treatment, medical supplies, cancer screenings, patient counseling, child care, respite care and more. Cancer patients are prequalified by their treating physician, who completes a simple application form which is submitted directly to 21st Century CARE. The application process is handled efficiently by our professional staff so patients receive the assistance they need without delay. The need is tremendous. The help we give is tremendous.

Every cent contributed to 21st Century CARE goes to cancer patients needing immediate help within Collier and Lee counties.

Kids Foundation

Kids in need need books to read!

That is the motto of Kids Foundation, started by Kelly Palumberi and other members of the Teen Advisory Team at North Naples United Methodist Church.

Visit our Web site at www.kisforkidsfoundation.org to join their cause and to view their video about bringing books to kids everywhere.

We know how important reading is. Sadly, some children will never own a book nor have one to read at home. Please support our efforts to promote literacy among children at risk and to cultivate their lifelong passion for reading by giving them books to read. Books are needed for children ranging from toddlers to teens. Donate just $15 to K is for Kids Foundation and a needed hardcover book will be purchased for a children’s reading environment where it may be read by dozens, sometimes hundreds, of children over its shelf life of four to seven years. It’s a low-cost, high-yield investment strategy in our community’s youth. Together we can enrich children’s lives one book at a time!

Encourage today’s readers. Inspire tomorrow’s leaders.

Naples Back Yard History (NBYH)

We are the educational arm of a not-for-profit organization called Naples Cultural Landscape — a fund of the Community Foundation of Collier County. Our mission is to save and promote our local history. We currently are working on:

1. An oral history studio

2. A city and county Heritage Trail guide

3. Collier County public, private and home school student’s first entry into the Florida History Fair and National History Day Competition

4. Local history coloring books for children learning to speak English.

5. Historic markers, interpretative stations and a 23-mile heritage walking path with the Florida Department of Transportation and landowners on Highway 29.

Our business model is one of collaboration. We invite you to support one of the following organizations that work for the greater good of our community and her residents: The Education Foundation of Collier County, the Children’s Museum of Naples and Hodges University.

Our goal is to work in tandem to ensure that our students have the ability to connect to their local history and that our citizens and visitors can learn about local history through speakers’ series and special exhibits for free or a very nominal fee.

For more information, contact Lavern Gaynor or Lois Bolin at 594-2978 or visit www.naplesbackyardhistory.org.

Lighthouse of Collier

We are interested people living in and around Collier County with the desire, dedication and energy to create a center in Collier County to provide support services for blind and visually impaired people residing in Collier County. Currently there is no place established in the county for the blind and visually impaired to assemble together or exchange information, interact or receive professional instruction in: specialized computer training, lessons in independent living, mobility training, Braille education, business skills and more.

Monetary donations and office space or a structure are needed. Interested people wishing to contribute time, talent and/or resources, including monetary donations, should contact Sandra Martin, VIP Outreach, 265-5355, or David Weigel, director, at 580-9511.

Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Sunlight Home

We are a local residential program for pregnant women and teens. We need a nine-passenger vehicle to transport mothers, infants and toddlers. Our 1997 Chevrolet Suburban has given us more than 156,000 miles of good service but is increasingly requiring repairs.

We are currently promoting a cash drawing for $10,000, $5,000 and $2,500 to raise funds, but like many charities today we have fallen quite short of our goal. We had hoped to sell enough tickets to purchase a newer used replacement.

Tickets are $75 each or three for $200, and the drawing will be held at our Christmas party on Thursday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m. Winners do not have to be present.

Tax deductible checks made out to Sunlight of Collier County Inc. may be mailed to Carol Erbach, 102 Edgemere Way S., Naples, 34105, and your receipt/stub will be sent by return mail. The odds for the cash drawing are better than the lottery, but if anyone prefers to send a donation just toward the van instead, any size gift is never too small or too large and will be gratefully acknowledged. For information call 261-0681.

Thank you and a blessed Christmas to all.

NCH Healthcare System, White Elephant Thrift Shop

When the recession hit us square in the face, we decided to turn our annual autumn champagne party at the Wilderness Country Club into a brown bag party for the benefit of the NCH Healthcare System White Elephant Thrift Shop on Pine Ridge Road.

I’ve been a volunteer there for five years and at the emergency room. Our friends were enthusiastic about bringing bags full of clothes and items they no longer needed or used.

Here is a list of the carloads I brought to the White Elephant:

-- Household: 160 items, including food, linens and lamps, among other things.

-- Miscellaneous: 31 items, including gym weights, telephones, wallpaper rolls, among other things.

-- Ladies garments: 388 items, including belts/scarves, blouses/sweaters/ dresses, handbags, shoes/sandals, among other things.

-- Mens garments: 144 items, including jackets, polo/tee shirts, shorts, slacks, sweaters, among other things.

-- Kids and accessories: 51 items, including hats/visors/scarves/socks, kids clothing, toys and games, among other things.

In addition to these wonderful donations, our Wilderness Free Lending Library donates all their extra books to the shop, so this fall we brought in a total of 113 hard cover books and 171 pocketbooks and three bags full of magazines!

It is deeply gratifying how just a little effort reaps big rewards! May this be an inspiration to those who wish to help others — it is so incredibly satisfying to the soul.

These are all absolutely wonderful Charities.

However, my heart goes to ReachOut Everglades.

I personally know some of the people in this area. Even on my worst day, or poorest moment, I have never had it as bad as a lot of the folks down there have it.

These people have been left behind in the progress of Collier County. However, many of their ancestors are the pioneers of Collier County.

The stories they can tell you, about what it was like in Collier County, back in 1920 and more, are amazing and wonderess.

I believe in second chances...and this area needs one from all of us.

Please don't let their chidren suffer or go without this Christmas.

I beg of you, open your hearts and donate. It takes so little to make someone poor happy. Even if it is only for a moment.

I wish I could help every group listed. I do give, but I wish it could be more.

I am awed by the many people who work to provide better lives for others.

You can donate stuffed animals to the Children's Advocacy Center of Southwest Florida - they service 5 counties in the area including Lee, but there is also one in Naples. They give a stuffed animal to each abused child that visits their facility. www.cac-swfl.org

There are 39 Charities listed..if every resident in Collier County gave $1 to each of these Charities...each Charity would collect $7500.

Believe it or not...that would go along way for these Charites.

Could you imagine if some gave more?

I put all of the change I had in my purse (car washing money) into Salvation Army bucket Saturday.I'm not missing it.

I sent a check for $20 to ReachOut Everglades...to purchase their cookbook. I have their first edition...the recipes are out of this world.

The money ReachOut collects from the sale of the cookbooks, Evergladesopoly game...and the Christmas Cards the children make at school...goes to the needy in the area. The cookbook and game make wonderful gifts!

Check out the items I mention at their site...click contacts, then click mail order form.

Thank you, NDN, for providing this list.

This year I chose not to participate in any office Secret Santa activities and am choosing instead to donate to one of the charities you have listed along with dropping what change I have into each Salvation Army bucket I see. Too many needy families and a horrible economy.
